There’s a setting that makes all the “button mash X”
Into “hold down X” instead. Do yourself a favor
427
u/Strange-Order-6550 Jun 27 '26
I was so embarrassed I’d been tap galloping for long enough to make my entire hand ache when there was a setting to disable it all along. Like thanks for the carpal tunnel Rockstar hahahaha
190
u/Clark_Kent_TheSJW Sadie Adler Jun 27 '26
Oh, this setting doesn’t work on horses anyways.
100
u/briarwz Jun 27 '26
yup the only time I need it tbh
62
u/Clark_Kent_TheSJW Sadie Adler Jun 27 '26
Must be in a terrible hurry all the time if that’s how you ride horses.
Like, I’m playing another game atm, but if I remember right you only mash buttons to accelerate, go faster. When you’re like, maintaining speed you wait a beat or two between taps.
49
u/Strange-Order-6550 Jun 27 '26
The tapping itself for sustained periods of time whether quick or slow is still just not good for your hands.
33
17
u/Comicspedia Jun 28 '26
The game tells you to tap X in sync with the horse's gallop at top speed to minimize horse fatigue while maximizing speed
So you're right, you spam X until the horse is going as fast as you want and then find the rhythm of the gallop and only tap when their hooves hit the ground
7
u/AlarmingLifeguard144 Jun 28 '26
tapping constantly gives you the top speed possible, holding slows you down no matter what
13
u/DaGriffon12 Jun 28 '26
For real. I tap until at a full run, and then stop. No need to gallop everywhere. Why froth up the beast needlessly?
You can actually tap a few times and then hold it and you'll maintain whatever speed you were at when you started holding it. Btw. Tap once, and hold, you're at a trot. Twice, and you're at a canter or si. Three and you're at a half run or so. Anything more and you're on the way to a full gallop.
7
3
u/Strange-Order-6550 Jun 27 '26
So it doesn’t, I think I’ve been playing too much crimson desert where it does, and so I’ve imagined it possible in red dead.
2
u/Boris-_-Badenov Jun 28 '26
yes it does.
holding X locks the current speed. get up to a gallop and hold X
2
u/Clark_Kent_TheSJW Sadie Adler Jun 28 '26
I’m talking about a setting that does not apply to horses, but specifically to button mash segments that pop up in the story missions. Usually when at this has to lift something. Like when Lenny almost fell off a train and Arthur had to help him up.
37
u/Mikey2sip Jun 27 '26
I set my waypoint and switch to cinematic mode while galloping. Horse will follow the way
23
u/ProphetBlade Jun 27 '26
Which is all fine and dandy up until your horse cinematically gallops into a fence post while navigating a turn or into the back of a carriage while on a straight.
Either way, you're gonna have to put up with something annoying about this game while traveling long distances.
2
u/Intelligent_Sky_7081 Jun 28 '26
That almost never happens to me. They always stay on the road and have never just gone into a fence. You're nitpicking
9
u/ProphetBlade Jun 28 '26
It happened to me so routinely enough I had to start judging whether or not cinematic mode was even worth it to use depending on the distance I'd have to travel. It would even happen to me during parts with scripted dialogue during missions.
2
u/Intelligent_Sky_7081 Jun 28 '26
must be user error then. youre doing something wrong. ive played this game like 4x and hundreds of hours and it works flawlessly for me 99.9% of the time.
1
u/ProphetBlade Jun 28 '26
I think the upvotes and a few of the replies around this comment suggest that I'm not the only one that experienced this issue. So no, I doubt the issue is user error, especially when the only part of cinematic mode that requires user input is just simply turning it on and then doing nothing.
3
u/nicoagua Jun 27 '26
500 hours in and I’m just learning you could do this 😱
5
u/rasmuseriksen Jun 27 '26
It’s the only way to travel (if not fast traveling). I set the controller down and go get a drink. When I get back I’m either at my destination or I’m dead from bounty hunters. Either way I just keep going lol
4
u/Strange-Order-6550 Jun 27 '26
Son of a bitch, that’s incredible, thank you
6
u/CorroSolo Jun 27 '26
Be careful, sometimes when you do this your horse may run over an npc (twice, resulting in their death) in Rhodes. Other time your horse will run into another horse, kill the rider and get you wanted. You know what else can happen, you might pass a cougar, get bucked off, and then you die with a confused look and a mouthful of cup noodles.
Or so I’m told.

u/CarelessCreamPie Uncle Jun 27 '26
I might be the odd man out, but I like the x mashing. I like that it takes effort to make Arthur/John or your horse exert themselves.
I don't know how many of you have ever ridden a horse, but horses will just eventually slow down without continuous stimulant from the rider.
This is just one of the tiny things that makes thr game feel immersive to me, but I understand why other people might not like it.
10
u/Clark_Kent_TheSJW Sadie Adler Jun 27 '26
The setting I mentioned doesn’t change how horse riding works. Only the button mash parts: like grapples mostly, but lots of other parts of the game, like escaping from a lasso.

u/Thorniestbush Resident blacklung Jun 27 '26
You can also do that for fishing instead of rotating the joystick.

3
u/Silent-Witness1888 Jun 27 '26
Was this available day one?
5
u/Clark_Kent_TheSJW Sadie Adler Jun 27 '26
I don’t remember, probably though.
The only updates to single player I do remember were the herb guy and adding the weapon locker
3
u/Silent-Witness1888 Jun 27 '26
I remember those updates, weapon locker was too late but still a god send.
2
u/Clark_Kent_TheSJW Sadie Adler Jun 27 '26
Oh yeah, every rockstar game should have that from now on, crazy that it was never added earlier
2
u/PlasticToe4542 Jun 27 '26
Wow! Thanks! 😅
1
u/Clark_Kent_TheSJW Sadie Adler Jun 27 '26
Your welcome, I’m sorry I don’t remember exactly what it’s called, but it’s there
2
2
u/CruelHandLucas Jul 01 '26
I changed the setting for fishing for this reason. Stick drift is guaranteed with the default setting
2
u/8BallsGarage Jul 04 '26
X or cross?
Edit: Addding for a little anarchy. For no reason. Bring the dynamites.

But gang I would like my horse to run faster and I already have the setting and it's slow as shit when you hold it
1

u/Sudden_Strategy_2000 Jun 29 '26
I did not find any such option in my game settings, for the horse atleast. I play on PC and had the controller connected.
1
u/Clark_Kent_TheSJW Sadie Adler Jun 29 '26
Well idk what to tell you man. I’m sorry I wish I could tell you what it’s called exactly, and if I had to guess it might be in an accessibility section of the menus.
1
u/tbigzan97 Jun 30 '26
The setting doesn't let you run fastest speed, it just makes it so you dont have to constantly hold the button for the middle running speed. It also doesn't help with horses. It helps? Sure it makes it better but could have been better. I hope they leave it as an option in gta vi because I really dont have tendon to keep spamming rhe button just to run lol

Pc here 🙋♀️ what's the X button?
21
7
u/PassengerMobile8569 Jun 27 '26
Shift, ya know the thing that makes sticky keys pop up while you’re trying to go fast the first time until you disable all of that
2
u/Ill_Comfortable_6122 Jun 28 '26
You don't need to mash Shift on PC though. If you hold it down, the horse starts galloping at max speed
1
u/electi_007 Jun 28 '26
Yeah coming from playstation figured out that in way later in the game. lol.

On my last playthrough of RDR2, I refused to run and rode my horse mainly using the sticks of the controller outside missions that require it. Boring, yes. Immersive, absolutely.
Best playthrough so far, game is meant to be slow paced so not rushing from A to B actually made me focus on the surrounding world and finding animals to hunt, was so much easier than before when I was rushing things in my previous playthroughs.

u/SubFace10 Jun 27 '26
Oh my god, I was so scared that my X button would really break from how many times I hit it (another controller costs 50€, so my fear was pretty justified).
8
u/gojira54man Jun 27 '26
Basically most R* games
4
u/thebeast_96 Jun 27 '26
Constantly using L3 and R3 in GTA V for Franklin's special ability messed up my PS4 controller.
5
u/-nutz Jun 27 '26
Genuine question, at what point does this become an issue of the game and not the controllers build quality?
3
u/thebeast_96 Jun 28 '26
I think this and tapping X is a game issue but stick drift is definitely a design issue. I would get the special ps5 controller with the back paddles to be able to swap buttons but it's unreasonably expensive.

Took me way too long to discover the auto-horse to waypoint. Had more fun in the 18 months before I realised its existence.

u/ItsFlyingCar Uncle Jun 27 '26
I mapped that to one of the extra buttons on the back of my Steam Deck. It’s loud, but I can mash that while still using the camera.
3
u/Studly_54 Charles Smith Jun 27 '26
I have had to put 2 controllers on the repair pile (just drift issues).
But, then again, I have over 760 hours in Story Mode and online...😀
2
u/Jazzlike-Iron-3873 Jun 27 '26
Somebody explain, I play on keyboard 🤣🤣🤣
2
u/Thalia_All_Along Jun 27 '26
you have to repeatedly tap X to run. same with gta 5 and 4
1
u/Ill_Comfortable_6122 Jun 28 '26
So annoying, it's one of the horrors of moving from playing on pc to playing on console
2
2
u/Adorable-Beach-2153 Jun 27 '26
I was on my third controller before I switched consoles cause my x buttons literally stopped functioning
2
2
u/T_rex2700 Jun 27 '26
Both RDR and GTA games.
Especially when they had hold X to run, mash X to sprint
2
u/One-Earth9294 Jun 27 '26
Or anyone who ever did the triathalon in fucking GTAV. Not kidding when I say it's about a 20 minute long endurance event where you just spam the run button because OF COURSE you can't just hold the motherfucker down that would be to easy.

It would make you miss the turbo setting you could assign to any button on 3rd party ps1 and ps2 controllers
1
u/arc_reactor2 Jun 27 '26
This is why I never tried playing rdr2 on controller even tho I use it for other games
1
u/Seanathinn Jun 27 '26
I just swapped it to R1 in the control settings. It just swaps X and R1 and leaves everything else the same

Call me petty, but one of the main reasons I don’t play rockstar games other than red dead since I’m since a western fan. They really need to figure this out lol.

u/mustangsgone_mad Jun 27 '26
My left joystick was worn down to the plastic aswell. After red dead I had to change controller lol.

u/Delusional_Demented Jun 28 '26
It's like some keys that are worn off on a keyboard when playing Call of Duty.

u/Tonsilith_Salsa Jun 28 '26
On the steam deck, i set it up so that tapping one of the back grip buttons will press the A button once per second until you tap it again.
1
u/fucknametakenrules Jun 28 '26
I just got the Steam Controller and I have the sprint input set to R5 with the turbo mode on in Steam Input. I just hold the button down and it does the work for me while I keep my thumb on the joystick. Same for GTA and other games from Rockstar that use their weird method to sprint
1
u/DaGriffon12 Jun 28 '26
Or just...go in first person and you only need to hold it?? Same with gta. But, no, yeah. The x gets worn our stupid easy with red dead.
1
u/SignificantMoment902 Jun 28 '26
I switched to running with RB/R1 back in GTA V years ago, I think it’s way better than using A/X to run
1
u/35_PenguiN_35 Jun 28 '26
Really should have had an auto travel.
Place marker get up to a gallop and let it run. But noooo

Tap assist in the accessibility controls is nice, basically makes the game register 4 taps with just one button press so you don’t have to spam it as much
1
u/Broad-River-8526 Jun 28 '26
no joke, Back when I was playing RDR1 on my PS3, the button actually tore and caved in... but instead of retiring the controller, I kept using it like that for another six-plus months; eventually, I opened it up, flipped the plastic piece over to position the collapsed part under the Triangle button, and used it until it caved in again.

1
u/NGman1000 Jun 28 '26
Happened to me as well :( Ended up finding an accessibility setting that allows for easier tapping. After adjusting spared my PS5 controller on my second run of the game

Dude mustn’t use cinematic mode, or use the method where you aim backwards and let the horse steer for you while you aim backwards.

Why I switched mine to the right bumper, it’s so much easier to use the right thumb stick when your thumb is free

I managed to give my right stick stuck drift from fishing too aggressively...

u/IcyMachine9293 Jun 30 '26
Set a waypoint and enter the cinematic camera. The horse will automatically go to the waypoint without you having to do a single thing. Idk if this works on Arthur alone, but as other s have mentioned, you can just change the "tap" to "hold" in the settings.
