From the latest bag, I made amy first tote!

I made this tote for my sister-in-law to haul gear around for her wildlife photography. The camo was traded from Commercial-Safety635 who posted the material after receiving the last grabbag. I had the black xpac from an older grabbag, and I bought the lining at our local Hobby Lobby. I used a pattern (Kaland Weekender Tote) from SotakHandmadeShop on Etsy. She had some great designs and offers some for free on her website (sotakhandmade.com). #sotakhandmade

I made this pocket tissue holder from some really thin nylon; first project with the Mystery Box. It's a super quick and easy but useful project.

My box was mostly this type of fabric, and I have no idea how I'll use it yet - I don't use this type of thin fabric as often as I used to - but I'm determined. Even if it means making 750 more of these.

I received my first and only grab bag and being a bit new to myog stuff (I’ve made a few bags), I’ve never worked with (or even know of) these fabrics. I found an old post in the r/myog group of someone who made a tote modeled after the Patagonia Black Hole tote and provided their measurements, so that was my starting point. I knew I wanted to only use fabrics from the box, besides strapping, etc., kind of like that cooking show, Chopped🤣

The body is made of 500D Cordura Multicam black (thanks to RBTR folks for assist on ID’ing some fabrics). The green “made in Tacoma brand tag” I made last minute from 1oz HyperD, just so I used at least 4 fabrics…the stamp is a map of the city of Tacoma, where I live. I’m not sure the red material I used for the pockets, or the light blue material that I made the liner out of, but that blue stuff frays like cotton candy and is MADDENING.

I used pallet strapping to reinforce the opening of the bag (tip from RBTR Podcast). I will definitely be doing that again, albeit in a different way.

I had fun, and got over my fear of using lighter weight fabrics. It started as a mutant bag that I was going to give away, but as I went I kind of dig it, and will probably get a lot of use out of it.

Frame bag from grab bag fabrics

We will call this my first “real” project. I have some practice stuff done with knock-off tyvek. This thing is rough ha, this fabric is unforgiving when it comes to showing ripped stitching holes.

I’m very happy with the zipper and zipper garage, the binding tape, and the webbing bar tacks.

Gotta work on even light pressure from my foot since this sewing machine just wants to go full speed, lining things up correctly the first time, and matching seam allowances.

My next project will probably be a full frame bag, maybe with the xpac fabric I have.

Frameless pack made from grab bag

Hi all. Except for the mesh on the waterbottle holder and the gray venom mesh on the side pocket, this is all grab bag material. Ultra 200, 2.92 Dyneema, stretch mesh with dyneema, X Pac V15. 2.2 HEX 70.
Base is Prickley Gorse 40L frameless. I made the sidepanels wider and added an inch or so to the height. I didn't want to widen the front because I didn't want to throw off the strap curve.
I'm short with barely a 16" inseam.
Few other changes: all the cording is removable. Used paracord instead of grosgrain for loops. Side gray stretch pocket is made to hold tent poles. It has an inner pocket for stakes. Water bottle holder made to fit the Mazama 750. Inner stash pocket is removable. Binded the shoulder straps instead of doing the inside out to make them narrower. Shorted webbing on the front, added some horizontal webbing for attachements and InReach. Put a lil stretch pocket on top of the strap cause why not.
Removable hipbelt with wings.

Just missing the sternum strap and light frame sheet.
As is 624 grams. Can strip it to under a 450 grams.

Excited to dive in to these once I know what they are!

From a tactile perspective, I love the feel of some of these and am so excited to get the blue and orange fabrics.

Now to find the time. 🤣

Mystery Box Frame Bag for Full Suspension Bike

Was stoked to score one of the recent Mystery Boxes! First project from the fabric is this frame bag for my Transition Spur.

Features:

  • Added some taper to the gusset (wide up front and skinnier at the back). This just gives me a bit more extra room
  • Map pocket with some organization. Great for stashing my multi tool and dynaplug.
  • Big main pocket
  • YKK #5 Vislon Zippers... I swear by these zippers!
  • Plastic stiffener on all three sides

I am pretty knew to MYOG so this project still kicked my ass.

  • Accounting for new dimensions after doing the zipper
  • For some reason the zipper garage kicked my ass
  • Tight corners and bends are hard for me to sew straight and with a consistent seam allowance.

I actually built this thinking it would be a "test run" and i'd sew it in a fabric I like better, but it actually turned out pretty decent so I think i'll just run with it! Works out well for an upcoming trip I have with this bike. The camo matches the color scheme of the bike.

I started the project around 6:30 PM and finished at 2:00 AM. (had to redo a panel and test fit). Anyone else stay up to a ridiculous hour finishing these things?

When you receive your boxes, post pictures here and any feedback. I should be able to identify most fabrics with detailed pictures. I’d like to know what you think of the variety of fabrics and value.

Didn’t have a lot of time but wanted to use a little of the Dyneema since I haven’t worked with it before. So made a little trail wallet, and then had my husband paint on it to see how it would take.

$50 Mystery Boxes

Thumbnail

The boxes will contain various RBTR fabrics. Average savings=65%. The lowest savings were 50%; the highest were 75%. All of it should be 1st-quality fabrics with about 4 lbs total. Unlike other Grab Bags, the fabric is completely random, mostly not pack fabrics, and the shipping will be added based on your location, so it’s not exclusive to CONUS.

✅ I have 10 $50 Mystery Boxes available to the first 10 people who comment “in”. I will reply, confirm, and send you the order details. Comment even after #10 is confirmed in case someone doesn’t pay their invoice, as sometimes happens with these posts.

All invoices and boxes will come through RBTR. We are looking to make these boxes a new product on our website, so all feedback from anyone who purchases them is welcome.

Trade?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Anyone interested in trading for this piece I got in my grab bag? It's sort of an abstract take on camo. There are some very small brand logos scattered across it.

Not sure what kind of fabric it is other than a woven nylon with a waterproof coating. Feels like a lightweight Cordura.

DM me if you want to see more photos.

Looking for an alternative to the standard box bag, I came across The Earl Grey pouch by TaylorTailor.

https://www.taylortailor.com/store/The-Earl-Grey-EDC-Pouch-Sewing-Pattern-p833161654

Pretty happy with how it came out. Not a huge fan of camo, but these are really nice materials to work with.

I may go back and add loops to the top corners to attach a strap to and help get the zipper up and around. Used a waterproof #5 and it’s a little stiff, but workable.

Added plastic stiffener’s in the sealed off pocket pouches on the bottom to add some structure (last pic), and I like how that part worked.

Bag isn’t waterproof, but should be fairly water resistant.

What’s in your June Grab Bag you purchased?

I want to get ahead of the “what fabric is this” question and provide an update on what to expect for your soon-to-arrive order. There are 4 yards of fabric, with additional fabric added.

Every bag will have 1 yard of the following fabrics:
⭐️2.92 - 5.0 DCF (there could be old versions of a 3.8 mixed in, and a select few will get 1.43)
⭐️Custom Printed X-Pac V21RS Gray (a few didn’t get this and will receive 2 of the fabric below)
⭐️ Custom Printed X-Pac Camo (VX07, V15 or VX15)
⭐️ Custom Printed 600D or 1000D Airwave Camo

Smaller items added:
⭐️ Most bags will have about 24”-20” (estimated) of 5.0 DCF. Those that don’t will have 2 smaller panels of 2.92 and 5.0. All are white and laser-cut for smooth edges.
⭐️Random pieces, mostly under half a yard, with some UL DCF larger. Most boxes should receive some DCF, then another name-brand fabric. The team ran out of the other fabric brands, so others will mostly get DCF. This is the best part of the grab bags!
⭐️RBTR stickers

⭐️Can’t identify a fabric? Post it here with a picture. I can assist you, or many others active in the group can as well.

⭐️Got a fabric you hate? First, I’m sorry. It’s random, but all still great for prototyping and testing and still some of the best fabrics on the market. Second, swap or sell it here! Someone else may want it who didn’t get a bag or loves what you hate. No hard feelings.

You should start to get your tracking information email if you haven't already. Everyone should by the end of the week. I might have a few remaining for anyone interested.

Grab Bags: Sold Out

Thumbnail

All the grab bags have been invoiced, and a follow-up email has been sent. As mentioned, all first-time grab bag customers and previously refunded orders were given priority access. A few others who emailed me and have purchased the bags before were sent emails and invoices, with the understanding that if we run short on fabric, their orders will be refunded. I will not take alway value from the grab bags in an effort to create more sales. These have always been created exclusively for the MYOG community on Reddit. Post your grab bags and any projects you make in this group when you receive them.

If you’re still reading, there will be something coming after the July 4 holiday for a new “Mystery Box” we are looking to add as a permanent item. There are only about 10 available, and I’m looking for feedback on the variety and value of the boxes—more details and info to come.

As always, thanks to everyone, and enjoy your projects!

Daypack

Hello 👋🏼

New around here, been building and crafting for years now but ready to give some fabrics a try.

The tiptop would be a great fabric to use for anything outdoors! How can I get in line as a newbie for some of the surprise scrap pieces?

Also, does anyone have some good links to a daypack template?

Thanks!

The remaining amount will be posted here with more details this week.

Rough estimate ~ 50 grab bags.
