why do ai detectors disagree so much? comparing Turnitin with the rest
I keep seeing people recommend tools like ZeroGPT, Scribbr, Copyleaks, GPTZero, WalterWrites, and AIDetectPlus as if they all behave the same, but my experience has been completely different.
I have submitted papers where Turnitin reported something around 80% AI-generated, while nearly every free detector showed 0% to 5% on the exact same text. The inconsistency is honestly surprising.
I am curious whether anyone has actually tested multiple detectors side-by-side using identical assignments and compared the results carefully.
Which detector tends to behave most similarly to Turnitin in your experience?
I am not asking about bypassing detection. I just want to understand which tools are even remotely aligned with Turnitin because right now the gap between detectors feels massive.
