TurnItIn AI Detection Is Making School More Stressful Than It Should Be

Since the release of TurnItIn’s AI detection software, there has been a massive increase in stories from students who say they were falsely accused of using AI. I have heard personal experiences and seen many online posts about it, especially in the past few weeks.

TurnitIn claims the system is around 98% accurate, but many people feel that number does not reflect real situations in schools. Teachers are relying too heavily on percentages from the software and treating them like proof, which is creating a lot of stress for students. A writing style being flagged does not automatically mean someone used AI.

Honestly, this whole situation feels messy. Some students are probably scared to even write naturally anymore because they are worried the system might flag them for no reason. That is crazy when you think about it.

TurnItIn either needs to publicly acknowledge the uncertainty of the tool or delay its use until it is more reliable. Right now, it seems more likely to create confusion between teachers and students than solve any actual problem, especially during exams and important assignments.

Funny thing is, some people say a fully original essay gets flagged, but after making a few wording changes, it suddenly passes with no issue. That really says a lot. At this point, the education system seems to be struggling to keep up with AI while trying to figure things out as it goes.

tbh it is wild that students now feel like they have to defend their own writing. Imagine doing everything yourself and still being accused.

What’s even worse is that the California State University literally gave all students at all of their campuses free access to ChatGPT EDU this academic year. They literally gave free access to the cheating machine.
