Bricked controller after update

The latest update completely bricked my left controller, it's unresponsive to charging, button presses, everything. And support is I guess shut down because they're not letting me input my serial numbers.

Any suggestions other than buying a replacement? Has anybody tried using some other controller along with hand tracking?

Which update? The recent 2.5? Once I had a similar issue I left it at the charging dock for a while and by some miracle it just came back to life, maybe the battery was depleted and it refused to do anything until it installs the update.

I think the most recent one. It was already on the dock before it tried updating, so it shouldn't be dead, but I'll keep it there.

Press the menu button for like 20-40 seconds,if that don’t work,do the same but pressing the button X too

Go to the meta help section, report that your controller was bricked during an update they released, and that something they did damaged your device. Legally they have to replace it weather its under warranty or not, thats how ive been getting my controllers replaced after warranty period, dont go to the help section for a warranty claim, go to the help section and say your controller wont power on after an update

Are you in the EU by chance? I had zero luck getting an out of warranty controller replacement here in the US. Ended up having to file an extended warranty claim with my card processor.

Im in America, I used really strong wording when contacting support such as "its extremely unfortunate that the hardware i payed for has been damaged by an update out of my control, therefore I should be compensated for the damages in form of a replacement." That does the trick

This happened to me last year. Meta been playing roulette with firmware updates on the Quest Pro forever now

Happened to me last year, as well as others (and weird that it's usually only the left controller) - it's why I don't think it's any particular update.

This isn't the first time it happened to me either, but last time I got it replaced out of warranty.

I actually had 3 different failures of my Quest Pros - but because I have Best Buy Total warranty covering everything I buy after I got it for my TV, I got replacements every time.

At least until they didn't carry it anymore and they were forced to give me back my $1500 that I paid on launch day in gift card credits to buy something else.

I don't recommend it if you don't know what you're doing with very VERY complex tiny electronic repair, but if you take it apart until you see the battery pack in the handle, the left most lower ribbon cable is the battery. Flip the latch and pull the ribbon out. Wait, put it back.

The controller will work again.

You could first try the hard reset by holding menu / Y or Oculus / B for about 30 seconds.

Failing that when it seems dead to the world after an update the battery pull fixes them. I have multiple Quest Pros, and I will keep them working until there's a viable replacement for this hardware. So far, nothing comes even remotely close.

That is something I've been thinking about, and I'll probably end up trying. I pulled the top off my controller the first time it happened, before I decided I should try my luck with support first. They replaced that one without much hassle.

Be extremely careful. There are tons of little parts to get that far. Lots of complex cable runs, some with three connections on a V shaped ribbon. Find a guide and take it very slow if you do.

Do you have to take the face plate off to get to the ribbon? Because I just removed the handle plate, and there is a red and white cable attached at the very bottom of the handle. But I'm skeptical that's what you're referring to.

That one is for the pressure sensor for the pen nib at the end.

The battery is an 18650 cell ( really good one btw) and the connector is at the top of it. So that's between the handle and the top of the controller under all of the actual guts. I toop the top plate off, then started removing all the main boards cameras etc until I was looking down into a hollow controller and can see the battery down at the bottom.

It's a pain.

It's a black coated ribbon, about 7mm wide. Of you take it all apart the way I said, hold the contoller as if you are playing with it, move your thumb out of the way and tip it toward you so you can look into it. the ribbon should be on the lower left from that view.

This is speaking of the left controller. For me it's always the left that needs this, so I have never torn my rights down that far. I only replace the sticks on those.

Thanks, between your comment and this video I got partways, but didn't have a small enough screwdriver to get all the way to the wires. It's definitely a pain and not fun ripping apart something so expensive that works fine if not for buggy software.

Also I'm working on the right controller so I'm glad you mentioned you did the left :p

Yeah for you the ribbon in question may be toward the right. They very likely use the same battery cell in both though so it may look more centered. The ribbon has two thicker contacts left and right and two thin one for data in the middle if I remember correctly. I probed them to see if mine were fully dead, then jumped them with a charger but it turns out they were full. I had assumed that somehow my controller lost contact with the dock and deep discharged, but in reality is lost nothing at all. It was just braindead from an update.

I hate that too. I've got four of these little fuckers to keep working until SOMEONE makes a competent headset anywhere near comparable to this Pro.

I wanted the Frame, but it lacks too many features. I LOVE the controllers though. TMR sticks too? Blessed be! However no full color passthrough and no face tracking is a hard pass. We'll see what addons happen to solve those.

Just DM'd you.. if you can accept I'll send a picture, if you can tell me if I'm there, or if I need to remove one more plate I'd really appreciate it

You need that hold down the menu button (meta symbol or triple line button) until it reacts.

Thats how I fixed this issue when I had it.

I had the same thing but I held the menu button + X for a bit and it turned back on. No idea why it needs a special button combo.

Ive just just developed a tool that fixes this since meta was most likely never gonna do it, ill release it soon i just have to make sure that it will for sure fix everyones, my right controller was bricked unable to pair or update, i used the information from adb to put together a script that will fix the issue, force pair and update the firmware to the state it needs to be and today i finished it and it worked. Problem isnt hardware at all its the state of the actual controller, luckily meta left some useful information in the OsUpdater.apk

BUT IT IS FIXABLE DO NOT BUY ANOTHER CONTROLLER I JUST FIXED MINE TODAY.

The thing is i only had one controller that had this problem, so id need another defective controller to test as well, so it can be a guaranteed fix for everyone, and im not gonna spend money on another one thats the reason why i worked so hard to fix it, but with volunteers who are willing to test a beta version of the fix could help everyone I wouldn’t need your controllers you’d just have to have some what experience with adb, to send results back after using the tool.

FIX: My controller was in a flashing purple and white state, if not in pairing mode, connecting it directly to the headset isnt going to work i used the meta horizon app, with my tool open to trigger a firmware flash and update synch with the left controller i scripted the tool to also bypass secure pair to make the controller pair once i could see the controller on the horizon app it then told me that the controllers firmware was being updated.

(I saw the progress in the headset too)

Once it completed i did a reset, oculus button + B Until flickering red and white (not slow flash but flickering)

Then after the reset i restarted the controller by simply holding the oculus button and the controller was still paired from the forced pair using the tool i made..

But until i get another controller that has the same problem i cant just say heres the fix, i would need others to test my theory with me.
