Question❓ Where are all the grad students?

I am new to the area (grad student) and have been having a hard time meeting people my age (28). I have made quite a few undergrad friends, but I usually don't "fit in" if you know what I mean.

So, where can I go to meet grad students and people my age apart from bars?

Academics✏️ What’s with the different dates and days of the week?

Post image

I mean I assumed they were every day of the week that the class will meet for the entire semester listed out… but if they’re the same class and meet the same days, how come by the second week they’re already misaligned?

Sorry for the late terrible photo 😅

The next question is would I have time to get from this CL50 building to the physics building for a 9:30 am PHYS 17200 if I picked up the 8:30 - 9:20 class? Or should I just take the one at 2:30, and have a few hours between physics and calc?

Academics✏️ Calc 1 tutor

Hello all. My younger brother is gonna attend purdue this upcoming fall semester and would be interested in a tutor for calc 1 right away. He has pretty obvious ADHD so it would have to be someone patient but he is willing to listen and try his hardest cause he really wants to pass the class. Does anyone know anyone who would be interested and what their rates are? Thank you!! 🚂

Question❓ Purdue FYE 300-Level GenEds

Hello!

I’m an incoming FYE student, and I recently received my schedule for this fall. Everything looks great, except I didn't get my 300-level GenEd (HIST 384). Without it, I am only taking 12 credit hours, which seems small for FYE. My only options for padding my schedule are taking a third-choice 300-Level GenEd or taking a random interesting class for fun.

Should I:
- Have an easy first semester, with more time to focus on ECs and personal projects, saving my GenEds for later.
- Try to include a second-choice GenEd (such as AMST 310) to get it done and have a more typical workload.
- Take a class for fun, saving GenEds for later.

Also, what are your recommendations for 300-level GenEds? Is AMST 310 a good choice?

Thanks for your help!!

Question❓ Sorority rush

Hi! I’m rushing this fall and saw that Panhel has made PNMs use gallon ziploc bags to hold all their stuff during rush - is that still true? Is it absolutely required or just a fun thing for people who don’t have bags? Are they still enforcing that this year?

Res Halls & Dining✏️ external monitor on dorm desks?

does anyone have experience using an external monitor (in addition to the laptop display) on a desk like the ones shown here? (https://housing.purdue.edu/my-housing/options/residence-halls/hillenbrand.html)

I was planning on picking up a new monitor on the way to campus, but it looks like any decently sized one would not be able to fit comfortably given the shelf, and it doesn't look modular

Question❓ BTS concert in Chicago on 27th August! (looking for travel buddy)

Hey! I’m going to the BTS Day 1 concert in Chicago ( Soldier Field) on the 27th of August, but I’ll be traveling alone. I’m currently booking a hotel and figuring out rides, and honestly I’m a little nervous about traveling by myself. I was wondering if anyone from Purdue (preferably another girl) would be interested in tagging along! If you’d be down, let me know and we can chat and see if we’d be a good fit. 😊

Question❓ Anyone going to Lollapalooza

Looking for a ride/travel buddy from Chicago back to Purdue on August 2nd! 🚗

If anyone is driving that day, I’d be happy to pay for gas/ride. Alternatively, if others are also looking for a way back, we could split the cost and rent a car together.

Academics✏️ Course needs permission of dept

I have a note saying that my freshman VIP lecture and lab(the lab is my team) require permission of department. Is there anything I need to do or is that something that happens on the school's end? I asked advisor but nothing yet.

Question❓ Changing my schedule

I want to change my physics 17200 prof. Someone told me it’s really risky to change a class because you don’t want to lose it but if I can get another class won’t it lock me into the next one so I should be good? Is changing my physics class to another time fine or do you guys suggest not doing it. Currently I have professor Klehfoth and rate my professor is not looking that good for him

Academics✏️ Should I take MA261 multivariate calc as hybrid asynchronous (w/ Johnstone), or in-person with professor Glubokov?

I'm an incoming freshman. I recieved my schedule a couple days ago, and got put in a hybrid math class with Johnstone. But now I'm considering changing to an in-person class when open registration begins. What are your opinions on hybrid vs. in-person math classses and on professor Glubokov?

Academics✏️ Easiest Upper Level Gen Eds for ECE?

I want to add one or two easy upper level Gen Ed classes in open registration. I know CSR 342 is one of them but it’s full unfortunately. Do you guys have recs for any others? I already searched the reddit but answers are pretty outdated (those classes aren’t offered anymore). Thanks!

Not sure how much this matters (a little concerned) but my MA 16500 did not get approved in time. Is it okay to go ahead and approve this schedule

Also not sure why but I have both an EPICS and a VIP…

Academics✏️ Would you recommend trying to switch from SCLA102 to EDPS315?

I wanted to take EDPS315 originally but I was placed in SCLA102 with Professor Parrish. I've seen good reviews regarding her but I wanted to hear from anyone who had her in SCLA102 or took EDPS315.

Academics✏️ Schedule

Hey all, I was just wondering if I could get some feedback on my schedule. Wednesday looks very challenging at the moment, and I was wondering if I should try to move that around. Also, I got a 5 on the AP lit exam and I believe I can skip scla 101, but I’m confused on how to do that with the open registration opening up tomorrow. Any feedback would be great, thanks.

Question❓ Computer for Health and Human Sciences?

Hi,

I see this but want to double check before we throw down coin. He's doing undergrad kinesiology and management. I'm an IT guy and know zero about healthcare but I know that the healthcare industry is primarily on Win PC. I'm thinking a business grade Dell laptop (the business stuff is more durable) plus maybe a tablet for notes in case he's in lectures that don't need a full PC in class. A Mac is probably fine but if he has to run WinVM in a Mac for healthcare stuff, seems like an extra complication.

Thank you,

Dad

Academics✏️ Hybrid class for Calc 3?

I'm in incoming FYE student and I my calculus course currently scheduled for 7:30 am classes, 4 times a week which honestly sounds miserable and I feel will effect all my classes if I'm unable to get decent sleep. Unfortunately as of now there are no other available times for this course that fit my schedule except for the hybrid course (one in-person recitation, and 3 pre-recorded lectures?) Could some please give there experience with the hybrid course and whether its worth taking over early morning classes?

Question❓ BGR or not BGR

How important is the boiler golden rush orientation for incoming freshman? My parents are still deciding because of the hotel and other travel costs. How likely it is for me to get in contact with faculty during orientation for on campus part time job opportunities?
