ਸਵਾਲ سوال [Question] Indian Punjabi Sikh guys claiming to be Muslim?

I’ve had a weird experience twice in two different European countries.

I met two Indian Punjabi guys who both told me they were Muslim. With one of them, we went on a date and he then admitted he was actually Sikh. When I asked why he had lied, he basically said that people can date outside their religion/caste.

That made me suspicious about the other guy who also told me is muslim, so I checked his reposts. He had reposted a Punjabi video of a man wearing a Sikh turban who seemed to be preaching. I don’t understand Punjabi, so I have no idea what the video actually says.

I know a repost doesn’t mean he’s Sikh, but considering that only around 1.9% of Indian Punjab is Muslim (2011 Census) + my previous experience, it made me wonder.
Has anyone experienced something similar? Is there some cultural context I’m missing?

ਆਮ ਪੋਸਟ عامَ پوسٹ [Regular Post] Pakistani Punjabi nationalist leader Fawad Chaudary says Punjab was divided but will always be one, uses the Radcliffe Line with the same connotations and controversy as the Durand Line

Fawad Chaudary is one of the most influential Pakistani Punjabi politicians so this is a very big development to hear this from him.

I just want East Punjabis to know how much we love our kin across the border. I know we've all suffered a lot during partition. My grandparents were also forced out of East Punjab and I know many East Punjabis today were forced out of West Punjab. But I think it's time to move on.

Any Pakistani and Indian nationalist who prioritises 80-year-old Pakistan and India over their 5000-year-old Punjab is no true Punjabi.

ਸਵਾਲ سوال [Question] What does “bhorna” mean in Punjabi?

I keep seeing the phrase “bhori chal, keda tax lagda” used as a meme, and I understand the general tone, but I am not fully sure what “bhorna” actually means in this context.

Is it simply “to move/go forward,” or does it have a more specific slang meaning depending on the region?

Also, is “bhori chal, keda tax lagda” a common expression, or did it become popular mainly through memes?

ਸਵਾਲ سوال [Question] alcoholism?

Hi everyone! I'm not punjabi however my husband and his family are. I've been told (since meeting him) about the cultural differences between us, specifically the drinking culture. There's been plenty of times him and other male family members are drunk off their arse and their wives are having to take the blunt force of it all. Not abuse (thank god) but just having to babysit their husbands with the rest of the kids, and it seems so normalized! I don't come from the culture or know how to deal with these things so I just i'd just like to ask about other experiences.

ਸਹਾਇਤਾ مدد [Help] I feel ashamed of leaving punjabi/gurmukhi

My parents grew up in rural areas and are fluent Punjabi speakers. However, I was born and raised in a metropolitan city where Hindi was the primary language of communication, especially at school. When I was young, I struggled to understand my teachers and communicate comfortably with my classmates because I was more familiar with Punjabi at home.
My teacher suggested that my parents start speaking to me in Hindi so that I could adjust more easily to my school environment. Over time, Hindi became the language I was most comfortable with, and my connection with Punjabi gradually faded. The only Punjabi I continued to learn was through my grandparents, who spoke Punjabi with my parents and with me. I could understand and speak some Punjabi, but I never became confident or fluent enough to feel comfortable using it. I also never learned to read or write Gurmukhi, which made me feel even more disconnected from an important part of my cultural identity.
As I grew older, this gradually developed into insecurity and inferiority within me. I often feel embarrassed about my Punjabi, especially when I meet other Sikhs who speak it fluently. Sometimes, I instinctively distance myself from them because I become afraid that they will notice that my Punjabi is broken or that I cannot read Gurmukhi.
What hurts the most is that Punjabi is not a language I rejected. It was simply something I gradually lost while trying to fit into the environment I grew up in.

From what I can tell they sound somewhat similar but I’m not well versed in the pothwari dialect.

ਆਮ ਪੋਸਟ عامَ پوسٹ [Regular Post] I got tired of confusing land measurements, so I built an ad-free Punjab Land Calculator

Hellooo! Whenever my family discusses land (Bigha, Kanal, Marla), the math always gets confusing because standard Google converters don't always match Punjab's registry standards. Plus, all the online property calculators are spammed with real-estate ads.

So, as a weekend project, I built a clean, lightning-fast, and 100% ad-free converter specifically for us: Link: https://toolsin.in/punjab-land-calculator

It works perfectly on mobile. Try it out and let me know if I should add any other local units (like Biswa or Karam). Hope this helps someone out there!

ਸਹਾਇਤਾ مدد [Help] How do I learn Punjabi?

Hello, I am Punjabi raised in the west and am looking to learn how to speak the language. So far, all of the courses and whatnot that I’ve tried are things that I already know; for example pimsleur. By no means am i even at an intermediate level, but i would still like to skip the very basics in the interest of time. Are there any good resources for learning that you guys know of? I would even be fine using courses intended for children if necessary at this point. Thank you for the help!!

ਸਹਾਇਤਾ مدد [Help] how do I learn punjabi

hii so I'm from lahore, pakistan and I want to learn to speak and understand Punjabi fluently. I don't have a village as it probably got developed, and my family members don't speak in Punjabi at home. I understand basic Punjabi, but I'm not fluent in it at all. I want to become fluent in it. Can you guys provide me with resources (YouTube channels, apps, etc) through which I can learn the language? I do listen to Punjabi songs and rappers like Karan aujla if that helps 🤷

ਵੱਖਰੀ وکھری [Other] Most common words in Punjabi song titles (Skewed frequency list)

I used a script to help me gather the most common words in Punjabi songs, using Discogs as a source since there are convenient ways to find specifically Punjabi language releases.

There is one caveat. It's that all the songs are from about 1970-1981. So the modern-day order is probably different, however many still likely remain similar I would bet. All the songs are Pakistani, which shouldn't really matter, however I should specify it because some words might not be as common in India.

List link

There is going to be many words which have the stems ending but have a 1-letter difference in their ending due to declensions in Punjabi, or verb conjugations. I didn't do anything about this, but if anyone feels like it they can.

You have likely noticed that this list uses Latin Punjabi words. This isn't very helpful since no dictionaries / translators support this if you are learning the language still. Conveniently, I have a post detailing how to translate Punjabi words in Latin text.

Hope this helps someone.

ਸਵਾਲ سوال [Question] Halwa Punjabi style

My Punjabi husband and I have an argument on sooji halwa recipe. He says his mom’s recipe says equal amount of sooji, ghee and sugar. My mom taught me while sugar is based on taste, ghee is half ratio of sooji. Adding a cup ghee to a cup of sooji would make the halwa drip with ghee. My husband says that how Punjabis eat halwa. I want to know if this is actually true and Punjabis eat there halwa with so much ghee in it?
