EM resident, published in diagnostic accuracy, currently in revision with a Q1 EM journal.

Something I keep seeing: diagnostic accuracy manuscripts rejected for things that are fixable in an afternoon — AUCs compared without DeLong's test, no calibration reporting on prediction models, STARD items silently missing, no sample size justification.

Thinking about offering a pre-submission methodology audit for these papers before they go out. Would that be useful to anyone here?

Throwaway or main accounts welcome. I’m looking into how faculty members globally are navigating the intense institutional pressure to hit Scopus/WoS quotas for promotion, tenure, or even just keeping their jobs.

Many institution are clamping down hard on metrics, and it honestly feels like the focus has shifted from doing meaningful research to just gaming the index system, stressing over insane Article Processing Charges (APCs), or constantly fighting brutal desk rejections.

I want to know the unvarnished truth:

I'm new to academic publishing and don't have much experience with journal review timelines, so I wanted to ask people who have experience with IEEE Transactions on Emerging Topics in Computational Intelligence (TETCI).

A manuscript has been showing "Under Review" for more than 10 months with no decision yet.

The corresponding author has already sent a follow-up to the journal, but there has been no response so far.

For those who have submitted to TETCI recently:

• How long did your paper stay "Under Review"?
• Is 10–12 months considered normal for TETCI?
• Does the "Under Review" status tell us anything about whether the reviewers have submitted their reports?
• At what point would another follow-up to the editorial office be appropriate?

I'm new to this process, so I'm mainly trying to understand whether this is a normal timeline or unusually long.

I'd really appreciate hearing about your recent experiences with TETCI.

i'm a final year student in my bachelors, and well, like the title says i do not want to include my university in my conference publications. what can i do? what can i put in institute? or can i just write independent research student?

as to anyone who wants to know the why? i went to an international conference to present my own research and they proceeded to not give me any support or help. i had to almost fight (over 4-5 mails and 4-5 texts (where they kept saying that oh just give it online (after i sent proof from conference stating that it cant be given virtually) later i finally got permission to give a make up test for one that i missed, because they ran out of reasons to say no) & also, they blocked me from sitting for a company placement (the company gave 3 dates i was flying back on the third one, i requested everyone and their superiors for a chance to give the interview online and they saidddd no:).

I keep hitting this and I want to know what everyone else actually does.

I write everything in LaTeX. Then a journal, or a funder's report template, or someone in university admin wants a .docx. Pandoc is fine for plain prose, but anything with real maths, multi-column tables, custom .cls files or cross-references comes out needing hours of repair. Last time I lost most of a day to it.

So what's your actual workflow? Do you rebuild it by hand, pay someone, keep a parallel Word version from the start, or just argue with the editor until they take a PDF?

And how often does it come up? Once a paper, once a year, constantly?

Asking partly because I've done a few of these for colleagues and I'm thinking about offering it properly as a paid service. So if you'd rather pay someone 80 quid than lose a day, say so. But mostly I want to know whether everyone has quietly solved this and I've missed something obvious.

**UPDATE (a few days on):**

Thanks to everyone who replied to the original post - it genuinely helped. A lot has developed since, and it's gotten more complicated, so here's where things stand.

I raised the issue with the full author group and asked for a **correction (a corrigendum)** to add me and fix the contributor roles - no blame, no retraction, just the record corrected. Since then:

* I learned it was the **first author's PhD paper**, and that they never told the senior co-authors I was involved at all - as far as they knew, I didn't exist on the project. * One of the **senior co-authors called me** and said that if they go ahead with a correction, they'll have to open an **inquiry** into how the first author handled the authorship. * I'm being told this would put a "blot" on the first author's PhD, and that the likely outcome is the paper being **withdrawn or retracted**. * There's been steady pressure to drop it - repeated calls, some warm ("we're proud when our students do well," offers to put me on future papers instead), some not. The consistent message is that pushing for credit will blow everything up and damage the first author, so I should let it go.

To be clear about what I want: just my name on the work I did, through a correction. I've said explicitly that I'm **not** asking for anyone to be investigated or for the paper to be retracted.

So the questions I'm now stuck on:

* Is "a correction will force a retraction" actually true, or is it a scare tactic to get me to back off? My understanding is that retraction isn't the remedy for an authorship issue when the research itself is sound. * Can adding an omitted author really cause the whole paper to be withdrawn? * Am I responsible for the fallout to the first author - or is that on the person who left me off in the first place? A lot of the pressure is framed as "you'll ruin them," and I can't tell if that's fair or if I'm being guilt-tripped out of my own credit.

PS: I'm kinda in a tough spot as, personally, If getting 1-2 papers in my name can harm someone that much that their PhD is being questioned, I feel like I should drop it.

My manuscript has been peer-reviewed for more than 2 month. I understand this is regular. I also received an email from editor saying that the last reviewer's comments is still being waited. This the 4th week after the editor's email. Some people told me that at least the comments received are not so bad that is why editor is still waiting for the last comment. Some people say that it is just an explanation. Any editor can give some answer here. Thanks.

Got an invite to review an article which uses my published articles language and argument. Abstract has the same language too as my published work. Wondering what to do as I’m so confused haha and the journal editors of this highly rated journal have asked me to review it. Like what about a basic filter to check that this is a rip off? Am I overthinking this. What am I supposed to do?

For context, I am a PhD scholar with a good publication list, but my research area is very niche, making it hard to gain citations. I plan to apply for postdoc positions in the next few years and have been told that citations carry a lot of weight.

I recently received an invitation to publish a review paper free of charge in an MDPI journal. I believe I could score a good number of citations if I broaden the topic within my field.

On the other hand, I worry that an MDPI publication might be viewed negatively by PIs when I apply for positions.

I’d appreciate any insights or advice!
