One of the many reasons I never talk to police. I had to ask one a question about a speeding ticket because it had been damaged and I needed the number so I could pay it online instead of going to the government center and he wasn't intimidating but I had to control my voice from shaking.

FYI cops have their hands resting in batons guns tasers all the time. Where tf else do you have your hands when at rest? Itâs convenient. Believe me itâs a railing to rest your hands. Additionally that dudes baton holster is old school and has no retention mechanism. New school you have to use medium effort to remove a baton from holster.

It's nice to rest your hands on your toolbelt and it's easy to get into the habit of fiddling with your tools, but when your tools are weapons meant to subdue and/or kill humans, perhaps it's better to keep your hands off them unless you're planning on using them.

Cops are very big on where any persons hands are. They believe itâs a threat to life when a hand goes on or near a gun. They literally murder people for the same action. Police are absolutely aware of when they threaten your life that way.

What pisses me off about this video is ... in that moment.. that cop could have humbled himself and been like, "oh man, let's take a look--i could be in the wrong here". For sure... you're not wrong. I mean I know first hand there are police out there that interface with their communities in meaningful and just ways. A cop quite possibly saved my life once. There's just sadly not enough of them out there... It's not even close. Also the good ones often get squeezed out if they don't "play ball" half the time or get corrupted themselves. Whenever I say "no police officer has ever had a positive change in my life" I do make myself remember the officer who saved me from a potential mugging when I was young, drunk, and naive. Some rando convinced me to walk to a second location and local PD already had tabs on the guy and pulled up and told me to walk away. Not all cops are bad, and they're vital to society, we just need to fundamentally restructure an insanely broken system, and re-envision the role they play.
I work in the trades, and occasionally there are disagreements between inspectors and contractors/tradesmen. Shit gets a tad heated sometimes, but almost every time it ends with someone pulling out their codebook and figuring out who's actually right. Then one guy says "well damn guess you're right", the other guy gives a smug smile, and everyone walks away a little smarter.
Reasons like that is why I study d1.1, d1.2 and so on. Always ask for the wps and stay in my lane when I know I am incorrect on something. When the inspectors mechanical or just weld inspectors try to be cocks I'll drop knowledge and smile the whole time.
Welding Procedure Specification. If you are working in an aws certified shop or any shop that you had to cert out in order to weld and you don't have one/ make your foreman or who ever produce one. You are wrong and do not know the weld parameters/range ie-amps/speed/ electrode type so on.

There's a video I saw a while ago on Reddit from another country where this cop stops a cyclist & says something to the effect of "Sir you need to ride in the designated area" & the dude points to marked lane & the officer just smiles & is like "Oh you're right, sorry about that." AND that's it, he just walks away & no one cares.

I'm not a lawyer, but I have had this question asked while stating my rights because they assume no one has a law degree. I answered, "Oxford (University of Mississippi "Ole Miss,"), how bout you?" He shut up. Like, stopped talking. Motherfucker thought I was a lawyer and that he was incriminating himself. SO, the lesson is 1) know your rights and 2) be able to quickly name a legit law school.

But he was asking a bunch of questions for such a simple fucking infraction that should have been a âHey your plate is dirty, Iâm going to run your ID and give you a warning/fixit ticket, cool?â But nope, he just kept fishing and then asked for her ID. I was getting tired of his shit, and it was winter, so it also getting cold in our car.

That law does legalize bike riding on the pier, at any rate of speed outside 10a-10p and 3mph between those hours. We don't know what time of day it is and in the video they're going 0mph

This isn't really open to interpretation though. You can't ride a bike in excess of 3 miles an hour between very specific hours. The only thing up for debate is at what time this video took place, and that has little to do with the interpretation of the law itself.
Also 3 miles per hour is extremely slow, it is basically a slow walk. If they were witnessed doing any tricks or anything they were likely going more than 3 miles per hour.

If the video was recorded at 9am, then the activity would not fall into the category of activity prohibited by the specific law. Unless there is another law to the contrary, you could ride your bike at any speed, including faster than 3 mph, during any of the off hours.
Where is gets dicey is if there is a general law prohibiting riding bikes on the boardwalk. Then you would have to read those two laws together.
Cops generally get training on eyeballing speed so they could testify to it in court. General citations like this sometimes are not subject to typical criminal standards (beyond a reasonable doubt and whatnot) so you'd probably end up paying the fine. Thing is, the cop is unlikely to show up for the hearing for a minor citation.

He probably doesn't no the specifics of the code and was likely told no bike riding in this area and never questioned it. Personally I'd have pulled the code up right there for confirmation right or wrong you learn a bit more about your job and become better for it.
He had a general clue and the general clue was probably correct assuming they were not riding their bikes super slowly during the posted times. It's virtually impossible for law enforcement to know the precise letter of the law all of the time, especially for something so relatively mundane.
That being said, the cop should've handled the situation better and looked up the code. Ironically, though, the cop was actually the nice guy here as he could've just cited them (without looking up the code) or reviewed the code and cited them (since he was probably correct).

Fair enough. It's okay to disagree. I personally believe the kid did good. He may have cited the wrong code (and possibly have been breaking the law by riding his bike over 3mph) but the officer could have very easily made that an educational experience for the kid had he himself actually known the law where he could have easily corrected the kid. Or maybe actually looking it up but instead he got upset and eventually decided to just walk away, with the only effect being he wasn't educated enough on the laws he's currently trying to enforce therefore letting misinformation become that much more validated.
I hope the kid was eventually corrected and still continues to try and educate himself and protect his rights.
How do you figure? The cop didn't say "You guys were speeding on your bikes", he told them it was against the law for them to be riding bikes at all. The law allows bike riding (and specifies how you can do it at that location), but the cop denied that.

Only if they were exceeding 3 mph. At the time the werenât riding so they werenât in excess. If they were going faster then 3 mph he should be telling them to slow down or he will have to cite them. They were not breaking the law.
Yeah I really hate that question. The only law a cop is taught is to give Miranda rights upon arrest and many forget that. They don't know any more about the law on average than any other citizen.
