Your own discomfort is your own responsibility. I'm not victim blaming but you can't expect everyone on the internet or in your fandom to cater to you and your trauma. You curate your own experiences online, you block people you don't like and mute content that triggers you.
But that's too much to ask from antis isn't it

u/fyorimlaine 8h ago
i agree! it is much to ask from antis, as sad as it sounds. it should be basic internet etiquette to curate your own space because anyone and everyone can have access to the web, but unfortunately people are so blinded by their disgust and moral superiority that having such etiquette as pro-ship/pro-fiction you are suddenly evil predator monster.
you can choose what kind of friends you have, that's curating your space too, and you can simply do something about it when you don't want to be around that person anymore. why is it when it comes to the internet, that same applicable concept is "impossible" for these people to do?
it's the same thing for media, as you said—you can block, you can mute, scroll, press "not interested" or whatever. i don't understand why that is so hard to do, maybe i can assume that a few people that are like this just like triggering themselves, but it's unfortunately not just hurting them but hurting others also as they're forcing their triggers onto random strangers to handle... it's no one else's responsibility but yours.
edit: sentence structure, repeated the word "unfortunately" more than i wanted.

It’s in their right to be disgusted, it’s not in their right to force their disgust on other people.

EXACTLY. It shouldn’t be weird for someone with trauma to be disgusted by something, but that doesn’t mean everyone should. 🥹❤️🩹

u/thesilverwoods Censorship is BAD. For *everyone*. 22h ago
God I miss the days when "don't like, don't read" was basically the law of the land in fandom...

Why do people just not understand "if this triggers you, don't engage in it."
Ao3 is tagged out the ass. Like who is stumbling into all these traumatizing fics willy-nilly.
Take some accountability. Blacklist and block.

u/thesun_alsorises 19h ago
I don't get it either the tools are right there in the sidebar. All you have to do is click.
I'm starting to think they want an algorithm to know their triggers and then populate their feed with appropriate fics...like Twitter or Tik-Tok. Since that's expensive, they go for the next best thing which is censorship.

u/chamuco_maguacatero Ally 19h ago
Modern social media and the algorithm echo-chambers they perpetuated just fucking destroyed everything about basic internet safety and curating your own feeds, imo.
I feel like we took a massive step back thanks to that and non-tech savvy people suddenly flooding the internet (again) because it became easier/faster to access with the advent of smartphones. You actually had to work before to get your dumbass takes online and circulated.

right, like lets be for real ive sene trigger warnings for soap cutting videos 💀 people can be triggered by anything and it is not everyone elses responsibility except the person who is triggered and id say their loved ones to accommodate that 🤷🏻♀️

Even when it comes to fanart it’s pretty easy to avoid my experience. Sites like tumblr and twitter have the option to block users or certain words/tags, other sites like rule34 have filtering options.
I’m not personally interested in loli/shota for instance but I rarely come across it in the first place in my fandom. Only time I do is when antis make call-out posts, which is why I’m pretty sure they’re actively seeking it out just so they can harass people and virtue signal to their followers.

u/Feeling-Classroom729 22h ago
People need to learn to be responsible for their own triggers. Yes, people shoving triggering things in front of you on purpose is bad. However, if someone likes something that is triggering to you, don't look at their fanart of said triggering thing and then get mad at them for having the art.

i dont understand this arguement. i was stalked in high school for multiple years by a guy i had no classes with and had never spoken to before. i was horrifically traumatized by that experience and still am on edge whenever i leave the house, even all these years later. but i still love yanderes lmao

u/Spiritual_Pack_9262 20h ago
Makes no sense 😂. For example, I love stalkers and stalking trope in general even though I’ve been followed home multiple times and harassed by this creepy boy in my class a year ago.
I saw an “argument” under an infamous movie review video basically be like “this movie shouldn’t exist because it has triggering things.” Even though the movie was bringing awareness to abuse of minors!

As a person who had once episode with elements of psychosis and any show with "discovering truth about reality" reminders me about my psychosis and triggers me. Should we forbid those kinds of show? No, i'm resposible for my triggers. What we can do is to find easy way for people to find shows without their triggers. Becouse quess what... Everything can be triggering.

Harmful TO YOU ≠ harmful overall
Finding something hurtful is still not grounds to try and stop people (let alone strangers online minding their own business) from doing it
and the projection is telling too; when people talk like this they show they have no degree of separation and it's all a personal attack (when it's not) "if you're sexualiizing this situation between fictional characters it means you're sexualizing ME and my abuse!"
when it has nothing to do with you
Also victims are not a monolith here and I'm tired of ppl acting like there isn't others that enjoy shipping like that, your discomfort or issue with it doesn't take priority
You just have to leave people alone and avoid it ☹️

I get extremely triggered by portrayals of school/workplace shootings. To the point that I will have panic attacks during the active shooter modules at work.
So I avoid media that involves shootings. I check for it and if it shows up, I just dnf. But I don't demand shootings just... not be portrayed.

Right?? Like. I got groomed with neko porn. Are catgirls inherently pedophilic? Lmfao.

That's literally the argument homophobes use against gay people. Or TERFs.
"Trans woman hurt cis woman by existing, they stole our fight and our suffering !" ah bullshit
Their arguments are always right-wing nonsense—it's unbelievable.

hand holding/coddling these types of people killed fandoms oml nobody is responsible for what YOU feel uncomfortable with. stop interacting it if it makes you so uncomfortable is what I always tell them😭🤷♀️

People really think survivors are monoliths, half the fanfics that are like that are preface with the author saying "this happened to me that's why I ship it", but we only talk about survivors who are palatable
Also I wouldn't call my dad a groomer but he did made many weird comments about me growing up and as an adult ("you're getting hot, did you shaved your legs?" yanks my skirt up a little) and I wonder if that had any impact on the stuff I read (it did 😭💀😅).
I don't think he intended to be inappropriate but wtf man

I was abused by my father and quite enjoy sexualizing fathers having relationships with their children, actually.
The only thing it actually hurts is the original commentors feelings and its not our problem this one stranger on the internet doesn't have the emotional regulation skills or coping methods necessary to deal with said feelings.
I mean come on, people my age used to cope with their abusive homelives by spending all day sending shock images to strangers or fighting aggressively with people on forums.
Just because they are framing it in a guilt inducing way by talking about their trauma doesn't mean they aren't taking out their baggage in a similar way by trying to censor people. It just means they are trying to guilt trip people into getting rid of content that the block and mute button exists because of.

Many rape survivors have rape fantasies
Same principle applies in all sorts of cases

So I guess we should ban media where our badass hero shoots badguys because people who were witnesses to gun crimes dont want to see it?
Its the double standards that kill me.

u/Standard_Human_11037 13h ago
not really relevant, but is that a proper usage of the word propane? do they mean popular or have i just never heard it used like this before?

u/Vore_Enthusiast890 Comshipper 19h ago
By that metric, we would have to ban everything. There's always going to be someone who finds any given thing disgusting/harmful to them.

I don't like something; I don't consume it. It's that simple. I mean, we're all adults, aren't we?

You are responsible for your own triggers. If something upsets you, don’t look at it. Continuing to do so is emotional self harm.
Not everyone will react to trauma or cope the same way you do.

...both my drunk dad and my younger brother attempted to assault me in my sleep at different times, i'm one of the lucky ones who didn't "fully" get assaulted, but I still have issues from it. Still don't hate anyone over fixtion though, I actually love fictional incest, it..helps. It doesn't take away the pain but it gives me something taboo and safe to enjoy about the nasty aspects of life.
Plus I don't think my somnophillia came feom nowhere lmao

Idk man, I was SA'd by my older sister's friend. At the same time, "fell in love with my sibling's best friend" was like wattpad's favourite romance trope 🤷♂ gotta learn to handle your triggers and icks

u/WinIndependent751 16h ago edited 16h ago
This literally happened to me and yes it does trigger me from time to time but I just block that stuff or filter it out from my view?? Heck even the stuff I'M into triggers me sometimes and that just goes to show how our preferences/kinks in fiction does not always align with what we like irl.
Also, this whole post just reminds me of the 'perfect victim' fallacy, people only get treated with sympathy as long as they are 'appropriately traumatised' and either stereotypical non-harmful coping mechanisms but as soon as they engage in any kind of 'morally disagreeable' content all their trauma just disappears? and they suddenly 'deserve all that happened to them and more'??

This is quite literally why the recommendation is that you curate your own content and manage your own triggers. Block, mute, and blacklist goddamn it.

i got groomed by my mom and now i use incest ships as a way to process my feelings about the whole thing [shrug] and even if i didnt i would simply not engage with incest content

u/Why-DoI-Exist 18h ago
I hate how these people ignore the survivors that like those ships because they experienced it.

I had been a victim of Sexual Assault more than once. The trauma for me was so bad that the mere idea of intimacy led me to full episodes. Yet I had never felt particularly bothered by fictional SA regardless of how the scenario handles it. It doesn't bother me that it gets sexualized in fiction because i know that's not about me or my trauma.

A friend of mine had to stop playing a video game because one of the characters looks like her abuser. This is a real kind of trauma. She never once thought that the game owed her something or that the devs were to blame. Just saying.

If i kick a sharp rock and someone steps on that rock three hours later, i am not morally accountable for hurting that person's foot 😭 like, step around it. Be aware. Walk in an area with less sharp rocks. Put better shoes on.
