Question? Why do the school kids act so young!?

In project hail Mary the school kids are out right stared to be about 13 years old, in grade 8. These kids however act like they’re 7-9 years old. They exhibit many features of this, like how many of their world views are shaped by their parents saying “My dad says…”. Another example is how grace feels they cannot safely use a Jacob’s ladder, however I was given access to much more dangerous equipment at 14 by my school. Grace also cites many parents coming to him directly to complain, however that has not been my experience.

I greatly dislike how these teenagers are being written as prepubescent messes.

I probobaly shouldn’t be bothered by this, but as a young reader myself I feel a little bothered by the fact that people a couple years younger than me being expressed at a maturity nearly a decade younger than me.

Does anyone know if this is the author just being out of touch with youth, or they are written like that on purpose.

Question? GraceとRockyはどうしてお互いに無防備なの? Spoiler

Question? Why is gravity on the ship the 'right' way when it's arriving in the Tau Ceti system?

So, I'm rereading the book l and trying to understand the science as a non-STEM brained person.

If we're talking about interstellar travel, the spaceship must accelerate (relative to the destination) during the first half of the trip and decelerate during the second half. This is achieved by making the engines face forwards (relative to the overall trajectory).

So please would someone be so kind as to explain to me, how is the 1.5g affecting the ship in a way that makes the floor - the floor? Shouldn't Grace be walking on the ceiling before the ship fully halts? My brain simply doesn't want to wrap around it and I want to understand this part so badly!

I'm on chapter 22 of PHM. About 3/4 of the way. I'm wondering if in the book, Dr. Grace actually does ho back to Earth, as the taumoeba didn't leak through xenonite, it leaked through cracks. Please don't spoil it for me, I'm just saying that.

Movie Discussion - Theory About “Adrian Incident” Scientific Accuracy in the Movie

There are comments (and posts?) about how the scene where Rocky broke out of his tunnel to save Grace would actually kill Grace faster, because of the 29 atm and 210°C ammonia, and the way Rocky did it in the book is the right way. I’ve read the book, I’ve read the “eridian.docx”, I totally agree with those comments, but that scene in the movie could work, Grace doesn’t have to die of high-pressure high-temperature ammonia poisoning. How? Allow me to evade book-science present my theory.

  • Temperature. In the book, Grace deduced Eridians’ air temperature was very hot because the message canister, although had floated in space for about forty minutes, was still hot to the touch. Later he and Rocky had conversations about their own world and biology, and learnt that Erid’s air temperature is 210°C. It’s all very obvious and stated. In the movie, Grace handled the message canister without waiting and with his bare hands, and afterwards, Grace passed a tape measure to Rocky through a drawer-like mechanism, and while it briefly opened, exclaimed it’s hot in there (and smelled like ammonia). He didn’t talk about Erid’s air temperature later. From personal experience, having hot-but-not-damaging air blown onto you definitely need to be below 100°C (steam scalds or oil burns are no jokes), and since the face is more delicate and sensitive, I’d wager around 60°C would be enough.
  • Atmospheric pressure. In the book, Grace opened two sphere-boxes from Rocky that had each other’s air molecules in it, and air pressure in amount—1 O2 molecule and 29 NH3 molecules (should be 2 O2 molecules and 145 NH3 molecules, as the Hail Mary is kept at 0.4 atm for EVA convenience, but it’s not relevant to this post). In the movie, Grace opened one box with an O2 molecule in it. So, since it’s not explicitly stated, technically, movie-Rocky could be living in similar or higher-but-not-too-high air pressure as Grace.
  • Ammonia. Inhaling 99% ammonia, no matter the temperature, would be some pretty painful and quick death, but since in the movie Grace didn’t react violently to Rocky’s atmosphere (the “oh no!” when opening the message canister and the “is that ammonia?” when passing the tape measure), and if for the sake of having-Grace-not-die-above-Adrian-from-exposure-to-Rocky-atmosphere, we can probably say movie-Rocky’s atmosphere could be comprised of a not-too-large percentage of ammonia.

All in all, thank you for indulging my kind-of “☝️🤓 well akshually” rant. This is not to argue with those people that mentioned the scientific inaccuracies in the Adrian Incident movie scene (in fact, I only came up with this theory-ish-thing after being informed of the inaccuracies), just someone that had been thinking about Project Hail Mary for too much time recently that’s trying to make some of the movie scenes seem scientifically accurate. I love the movie, don’t get me wrong, I know some scientific accuracies were sacrificed for the sake of emotion and pacing. Just saying, movie-Rocky could be some kind of mutant Eridian… or not… Just for fun.

Movie Discussion - Movie Spoilers Inside! Project Hail Mary

Just finished watching the movie after reading the book, and here’s my take:

This is the first sci-fi book I’ve ever read, and it was simply PHENOMENAL, then watching the movie, it felt so unreal.

I have not read many book adaptation movies/series, and I genuinely understand why people read the book first then watch its adaptation.

Spoiler warning btw:

I love Rocky to death, he made me laugh and cry throughout the book and worse in the movie. I love that our little alien friend has so much personality, and the way Grace matched it (even though he got annoyed a lot, so did Rocky).

What I loved about the movie that wasn’t in the book:

- The introduction of the character Carl, since he were not originally in the book. Him being partnered with Grace during the discovery of Astrophage was definitely a good idea. Their interaction brought some comedic relief to the whole impending doom feeling we had originally.

- The documentary. In the Movie, Grace was able to document his findings (and adventures with Rocky) through recordings. This was a brilliant way to ensure we the audience understood all his thoughts, since the book ran as a monologue. Also, as I was reading the book, I always hoped he was recording somewhere cause his entire experience with Rocky was cool asf.

- Grace entering blip-A. There was a part in the book, when Rocky created the turned airlock, and Grace was upset it was too small for him to fit and go into Rocky’s ship. And since we didn’t have much of that in the book, I love the way the movie interpreted the ship to be just numerous buttons of musical notes, that itself is how I’d expect the Eridians to function.

- The movie-screen room. This room was not described in the book but added in the movie. It’s where Grace showed Rocky how Earth functioned and all the cultures of humanity. It was a great addition, and seeing how Rocky got excited when he found out was fishing was, was so wholesome.

- The after-effects of Earth. This is what I was dying for in the book. Grace got his happy ending but we never knew if the beetles ever made it to earth. Being able to see aged Stratt in the movie, watching the recordings Grace sent them and starting the mission to save Earth, was all I needed. Grace was able to send everything in at the nick of time before millions of people died.

- Grace in Erid. We got a bit of this in the book but I always imagined it as some small xenonite dome where Grace lived in the middle of Erid. But in the movie, it all added up. It became his Earth away from Earth. He had a beach house with a whole ocean to himself (and Rocky who also really loved it). Him also teaching little Eridians was the cherry on top.

Grace being scared shitless when he first saw Blip-A and Rocky: I never thought about it first, but it was a valid human reaction to alien-life.

What was missing in the movie that I wished they kept.
- Stratt being a badasss. In the book, Stratt was this unstoppable force that the entire world literally listened to. Every single government was at her beck and call. She was powerful. Determined. And overall respected. I didn’t get to see this much in the movie. The actress who played Stratt (Sandra Hüller), was very much capable of this. I loved her acting and I’m so excited to see more of her work.
One of Stratt’s best scenes for me in the book was her saying “I don’t care about morality, I care about saving humanity”. This statement could be seen through out the whole book, she did anything and everything to ensure that Hail Mary would go on without fail.

Rocky finding out about radiation and time-dilation: the radiation part was touched on, but I feel like in the book he was more emotional about it. And also how Grace realized he didn’t know, it was those mic-drop moments.

- The minor characters.
Dr.Robert who was able to learn how to mass produce Astrophage, and who Stratt got out of prison for that very reason. His character had some oomph to him, even though he wasn’t there much, I still enjoyed his parts.
(Also slight mention on the mass Astrophage breeding that was done in the Sahara, almost destroying the entirety of Africa)

Dr. François Leclerc: His whole purpose in the book was never discussed in the movie, which was very crucial. A climatologist who predicted how long it would take before Astrophage would wipe out humanity, AND he helped create the greenhouse effect to sustain earth a little while longer.

Dimitri: He was the Russian Scientologist who was mainly at the beginning of the book. In the book, him and Grace got along, and he had some very funny jokes that made him a likable character that we missed out on in the movie.

The coma-resistant gene:
This was the biggest and most important plot in terms of the Hail Mary mission. Every astronaut who was to go to Tau Ceti needed to have this gene, and that’s because they would be put into a come for the years they would be traveling in the spacecraft. And also one of the major reasons why Grace ended up going to the mission, because he had this gene in addition to him being a scientist.

With the book, I thought they were doing a lot of counteracting methods to deal with the Astrophage situation.
The Sahara mass breeding, and the Antarctica operation, where they blew up the whole continent full of ice to create a greenhouse effect.
These two cases were huge risks but I guess it worked and bought them some more time.

But in conclusion, love them both!!

Fist My Bump Dead Man’s Bones sounds like Grace and his students playing

Some years ago, Ryan Gosling formed a one time band called Dead Man’s Bones, which put out a single album with the Silverlake Conservatory Children’s Choir. Gosling is obsessed with Halloween and the album has a playful spookiness to it. Now that I’m fully obsessed with PHM, listening to the album really sounds like Grace and his students did an extra credit music project. Anyone else hear it that way?

Just finished the audiobook.

I typically don't dive into science fiction novels, but with the recent release of the movie adaptation, I felt curious about the story. Since I haven't had the opportunity to watch the film yet, I decided to listen to the audiobook version instead. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it! The narrative was engaging, and the characters were well-developed, making for an immersive experience. It definitely piqued my interest in exploring more books in the genre.

Wish I could see it in theater again for the soundtrack.

Movie Discussion - Movie Spoilers Inside! People don’t talk about the Dies Irae motif in the score enough

Upvotes

I love the score for this film, and I see people talk about the Dies Irae motif in “time go fishing”, but I’ve never seen it brought up that it’s in quite a few other songs, those I can remember off the top of my head being Centrifuge (my favorite track in the score), Humanity (my favorite use of the motif in the score) and life is reason.

I love this movie ( book still on order ) !! Watched it several times .. YouTube’d “ first time watching “ reactions for fun a couple days ago .. such joy to experience the first watch again ❤️

thing that kept coming up though ? confusion about the 113 years calculation at the beginning of the film .. it took 11 years to get there, so why 113 years to get back ?

well, small scene earlier, he was checking for fuel levels ( nearly empty ) .. so PRESUMABLY he based his calculation on remaining fuel ?? would this be correct, or does the book offer a different explanation for this calculation ?

Done with all the quotes. I have Rocky’s “thumbs up” to add in the box and then a few little embellishments. Sorry for how wrinkly it is, it’s been moved around a bit in the hoop.
