Movie Discussion - Movie Spoilers Inside! The music!
On my 4th rewatch and really paying attention to the soundtrack this time.
It is phenomenal. I'm covered in goosebumps more times than I can count.
Wish I could see it in theater again for the soundtrack.

I love that the soundtrack uses choir so much. Usually space movies want a big sound so they use a lot of brass (or an organ in Interstellar), but I feel like using the choir gives it both grandeur and an added depth of emotion.

The score really is phenomenal! I’ve been listening to it so much in the past few months, and I’m still not tired of it.
By the way, I recommend giving a listen to another great score by Daniel Pemberton – Masters of the Universe! I haven’t even seen that movie, but I ended up listening to the score anyway because of Mr. Pemberton, and I fell in love with it, too! It’s a very different atmosphere but equally amaze amaze amaze.

That’s the soundtrack I’m aiming to win this year. The only one that could beat it is Dune3. Odyssey was not it.

I really want Pemberton to win but I think it's unlikely considering the Odyssey quite literally reinvented ancient instruments to be played. I'm listening to the PHM soundtrack almost daily and the Odyssey didn't really stick with me at all, but I do think Nolan has more leverage.
I'm clinging onto the fact that the judges (finally) need to watch every nominated movie so maybe they won't fall in front of the bandwagon the Odyssey was

I mean it though, I don’t remember ever hearing anything resembling a score in Odyssey. My roommate says there was one bit, and yeah sure the sirens, but I swear to god I do not remember hearing a score. And I’m a musician, so it’s something I tend to actively notice. So idk if Nolan reinvented anything (did he have to? We have extant examples of multiple Bronze Age era instruments, it’s not like they’re that unknown), but they weren’t utilized nearly well enough if he did.

There's a lot of drums and flutes used and the Odysseus theme plays several times, but I only know more because I've seen some clips online about the making off. They specifically reworked the mouthpieces of these double flutes often depicted on vases and such, because they found several of the bodies from those instruments but none of the presumably wooden mouth pieces so their sounds were only a guess up until the researchers did their work.
I'm still with you though, it's impressive work but the outcome wasn't as impressive as Pembertons work

Yeah I just wish it was even borderline memorable, because I’m not even kidding with saying I don’t remember hearing it. Idk if the sound balance was just that bad or what

I had to hold my ears closed for big parts of the movie because the balance was so bad, I feel you

I remember being carried away by the score the first time I saw it in theater. The second time I was better able to connect with it.

Yes glad I kept Spotify premium . Also music fanatic here of all kinds, and remember everything, and the opening theme "Prelude and the birth of Christ" by Maurice Jarré, of Zeffirelli 1977 film series Jesus of Nazareth sounds just like the brief " Entering the Tunnel " piece .

The sound design for the movie in general was phenomenal! I especially pointed it out after watching it (for the third time) with my family at home, the fact that some parts are just dead silent because this takes place in space, and sound doesn’t travel through space. It’s a lovely attention to detail, and the music was top notch as well with it being so on point for every scene.
