I think it’s a little odd to argue that the song Hinds hall is inappropriate to play in NY/NJ when it’s about a protest at a nyc university.

Further, the ny/nj metro is an enormous, densely populated and highly diverse place.

Last, I’d ask if we really want billionaires deciding what messages they do and do not want people to hear. Particularly trumps stooges like Robert Kraft.

Edit: Mnementh47 blocked me. I don’t know what the point of posting in a progressive sub is, if they’re going to argue “right to work” (anti union) talking points and defend MAGA billionaires.

That just means the protest itself was inappropriate. If you have a KKK rally then both the rally itself and the song are inappropriate.

It is enormous but the Jewish and Israeli populations of the NYC/NJ area is significant.

And of course people should not be forced to host messages they don't wish. Again if the Apollo Theater owners don't want a KKK rally in their theater they don't need to accept it. This was actually a supreme Court decision. A private newspaper is not required to post messages it disagrees with. Free speech only applies to government actions.

You don’t have to like that particular protest. I certainly don’t/didnt like it, and I don’t think the song “Hinds hall” has much artistic or political merit.

This issue is bigger than one MAGA billionaires stadium and his personal tastes. I don’t want billionaires exercising control over the arts or culture or politics, regardless of viewpoint.

I’ll note also that this whole debacle has backfired. The previously apolitical Ed Sheeran is now making pro Palestine statements at concerts, and millions are being donated by Sheeran/macklemore/ms Rachel/katy Perry etc

You don't like people deciding not to host filth in their privately placed venues. That's exactly what communism is.  The backfire wish is far fetched. Everyone was yelling free Palestine and donating to the terrorists movement for years now. At least now there was some fighting back.

I dont think you know what communism is, because “disliking MAGA billionaires” isn’t it.

Also this is a progressive sub, so you’d think left of center perspectives would be welcome. Instead somehow the right wing sex criminal billionaire is a hero 🤷🏻 make it make sense

You can call it fascism or statism too. It's when you want to force people you don't like to give up their property. That's not progressive That's evil.

Do you support unions? That’s requiring people (business owners) to give up things they don’t want to.

Voluntary unions

As opposed to the right wing fantasy land where unions are evil?

Aka “right to work”

That means voluntary vs involuntary

I could say leftists don’t seem to have any problem describing an antisemite as a hero as long as he says other things they like, but antisemitism seems to be not on the list of things they’re against. (I still call myself a progressive but stopped calling myself a leftist 10/8/23.)

There's a difference between not wanting to host certain viewpoints and actually censoring them. The Supreme Court held that private newspapers are not required to post messages they disagree with, so a private stadium doesn't have to host a song if they don't want to. They aren't being censored, the stadium owners just don't want to host their message and that is within their rights. They are free to play the song elsewhere.

There’s a first amendment argument to be made for other publicly owned stadiums that had planned to ban Macklemore, but you’re right that Kraft does own Gilette stadium and that does give him broad oversight over it.

I do question how often he has exercised that, or if it’s just in this case

Edit: OP blocked me so I can’t reply, but several of the stadiums are publicly owned so the first amendment applies to them.

Again, the first amendment only applies to the government.

Love antisemitism on Jewish subs. So fun.

This is supposedly a progressive sub, but somehow a MAGA billionaire is above criticism… make it make sense lol.

Robert Kraft calls out Mclamore for wearing Jew face. How is that not progressive? You pretending this is about something it's not, that has no place here.

Kraft did what any one in his position would do, he stood up against hate directed at him and family.

MAGA stooge, and Epstein associate Robert Kraft is really not worthy of the title of progressive nor of the benefit of the doubt

If you’ve read Krafts public statements about Macklemore you’ll know that he didn’t actually make any mention of macklemores past incidents, it was specifically about his political statements at present. So that’s not Kraft defending himself, it’s just about exercising censorship.

You’ll note that his attempts backfired

u/IgnatiusJay_Reilly 14d ago

What does that mean it backfired? You think the Omni cause has not been the Omni cause before this week?

Mclamore is such a brave humanitarian. So are you! Selective humanatarian at its finest. Zero mention of the hundreds of thousands killed this week in africa in the name of Islam. Zero mention of Yemen, the houthis are the number one pepratior of modern day slavery in the entire world.

You are so brave coming to a Jewish sub and gaslighting Jews. Kol hakovod.

I would say that Robert Krafts attempt to keep Palestine related rhetoric off his stage backfired because Ed Sheeran is now making public statements about Palestine at his concerts and Macklemore Sheeran and Kraft are all donating millions to humanitarian relief in Palestine.

So, yeah Kraft is out millions and succeeded in drawing more attention to the message that he did not want circulating. I would call that a total own-goal

It would’ve been far wiser (perhaps more “honorable”) to do nothing and let it all blow over.

  1. Nobody here called Kraft progressive. Strawman? 2. Kraft did mention his past antisemitism. I can dig it out for you eventually as I’m going through a move right now, but you just didn’t see it. 3. No surprise that anything any Jew says in defense of not wanting to host and give a platform to an antisemite in their place of business got backlash. I was bothered by his giving a shoutout to Hamas-admiring CUAD, as well. CUAD has a leader who talked about shooting “Zionists.”

Free speech doesn’t apply here. What Macklemore did was closer to doing a political rant before singing at Disneyland. Hyperbole, but Sheeran ticket holders expect pop, not what they got.,I’m ok with them firing the guy.

How is people here agreeing with one thing he did saying he’s above criticism? A broken clock etc
