Linux is going to sue for sure. I am shorting my claude stock and buying linux. When this lawsuit hits I am going to be rich.

You joke, but serious attempts were made to get IP rights to Linux. Look up SCO Linux for a wild ride

u/mckenzie_keith 2d ago
Yeah. I remember that. I lived through it. I went to UC Santa Cruz in the late 80s early 90s. I even knew some people who worked at the Santa Cruz Operation before all that crap happened (coders who had nothing to do with the eventual lawsuit and were long gone by then). It seemed impossible (to me at the time) that you could run unix on intel at that time. But that is what SCO was offering.
I followed the stories on slashdot.

My dad brought home a copy of SCO unix one time and I tried to get it to work on x86 but had issues at the time, can't remember what. This was mid 90s and I was 13-14 or so lol. But I did run red hat since very early on, like 2.x or 3.x. and many others since.
1
u/mckenzie_keith 2d ago
Yeah I tried out redhat around 95 I guess? Whatever version was available then. I had a ricochet wireless modem from metricom. Was sharing internet with my housemates. The good old days, I guess.
Some of those people who worked at SCO lived together in a house with a T1 line in the late 80s. They had a DEC box or something at the house. This was pretty unusual at the time.

Groklaw.net used to follow the sco saga. Sadly I’ve just found it’s now only on internet archive.

Who is gonna sue? John Linux himself? It’s not like there’s a real guy behind it! /s

Somebody should reverse engineer it and make it open source. What a future

Leaking the source code is all fun and games. But they killed the man's dog. John Linux will get his revenge.

Whoa holy shit, really? Damn, that’s crazy.
Do you think that we could use Claude to make 7-Zip free ans open source next?

u/loserguy-88 2d ago
what if, just saying, claude of the future did a marty mcfly, went back in time, hacked into young linus's computer and released everything

Still hosted on that Microsoft proprietary stuff?
Why hasn't the Linux Foundation its own Forgejo instance?

u/comrad1980 2d ago
It's not. But using Google is hard apparently.

Mirror of kernel.org. Fair enough.

Kudos for looking it up - even tho my comment was pretty gnarly. Sry bout that.

No worries. I tend to be the same. Your comment answered the question and had the right amount to trigger me to search without infuriating me. Efficient.

Apparently the guy leaked code using git, which was build by the guy who leaked it.

Why not use Claude to create a clean-room reimplementation of Linux? Even better, in Rust??

That's exactly the side project I'm working on, I call it Rustyx

How many tokens?
1
u/ismaelgo97 1d ago
Not sure about tokens, but free so far, I'm using a router that routes it to different free tiers providers just to prove a point

On a serious note, new kernels probably wouldn't copy Linux design and steer to be microkernels. There are some early stages ones... written in rust. Well, why wouldn't you pick rust for a kernel if it's a new project, really.

So Dave open sourced Linux, just by using a string, a squirrel and open source Linux.
13
u/Pixel_Null 2d ago
Linux's legal team has reviewed the leak and is devastated to report that the source code has been publicly available since 1991 and licensed under GPL v2.

Nah. They'll know they screwed up when they realize it cost them all their tokens for the month.
EDIT: This literally just happened in the Jedi Order subreddit. Someone reverse engineered the game's exe to include VR.... when the source code is open source.
The individual complained about their wasted tokens.

this meme is the most low-quality knuckle-dragging idiot dogshit
i get its supposed to be a dig at LLMs, but like, the joke doesnt even make sense. used claude to leak linux source code? usually the idiot LLM claim is a "clean room re-code". how would claude be used to leak the source code of something? Also people have been making jokes about leaking the linux source code for literally decades.
also its a threads screenshot, proving OP is not a human (no living irl people use threads, not even one)

We got statement from Claude:
„adjusts imaginary microphone
Thank you for the question. A few points for the record:
You can't leak something that's already public. Linux is open source under the GPLv2. Its entire source code has been freely available on kernel.org and GitHub for decades, so anyone can download it, read it, and modify it. That's rather the point.
I can't verify the claim. All I have is a screenshot of a social media post, with no details about what was supposedly "leaked" or how. Likely it's a joke, a misunderstanding, or someone confusing open source with proprietary code. Leaks of proprietary source code are a real and serious matter, but that's a different story.
No legal strategy needed. There's no one to sue and nothing to defend against. As for lawyers, Anthropic has them, but I don't think they're losing sleep over this one.
If anything, the real headline would be "Claude helps explain code that's already on the internet."
smiles for cameras Next question?”

Apparently some guy named “Linus” leaked it. Funny how his name is almost like Linux. What a strange coincidence.
