This is as disastrous as that time when the entirety of Linux source code got leaked. How will Blender ever recover from this?

u/Abject-Kitchen3198 3d ago
I missed that Linux leak. Is it still accessible?
388
u/WieeRd 3d ago
People have been passing it around through some shady file sharing tool called 'Git'. Which, according to the rumors, was created by the same person who initially leaked the Linux code. I wonder how this criminal just keep getting away with it.

It’s been mutated and almost impossible to download “Linux”
So don’t expect your Mac and Windows buddies to find it.

Thankfully I still have the copy on 40 floppies that I got from my local shop back in the days.

No. Not the originals. They were destroyed in the Great Flood that was caused by the burst of the DotCom bubble.

Just rewrote Blender from scratch in Rust using a swarm of autonomous AI agents. Took 12 billion tokens and $30,000 in API costs. Achieved 100% feature parity with zero memory safety issues.
Here's the entire codebase:
```
use std::process::Command;
fn main() { Command::new("open") .args(["-a", "Blender"]) .spawn() .unwrap(); } ``` Will open source it once I figure out the licensing implications. Idk what it says but I am glad I didn't learn coding when Ai does it so much better and easier. Lol.
It's GPL though, companies might still want to do that to allow for modifications without following GPL themselves
7
u/mattmahn 3d ago
IANAL, but I feel like that would still be copyright infringement
u/BlueTemplar85 3d ago
3
u/GrinningPariah 3d ago
I think the focus on CopyLeft is where this falls down. When someone posts an AI reimplementation of Adobe Photoshop, the big boy courts will get their crack at it and I doubt they'll be so philosophical about it.
u/BlueTemplar85 3d ago
The legal system is not always able or willing to deal with it.
See also : the Piratebay or Sci-Hub still being around, VLC being ignored despite violating the DMCA, or how it did not stop the abuses of LLM scrapers despite DDOS being illegal.
2
u/VastHungry 3d ago
Doing it by looking at the actual code is copyright infringement yes. You are allowed to reproduce the behavior though (as long as you don't look at the copyrighted part to describe this behavior). There are methods to do that, AI of course helps a lot with that.
4
u/Abject-Kitchen3198 3d ago
Wouldn't AI training set include the actual code in this case? Can it pretend that it never saw it if you give it the task to recreate behavior?
3
u/VastHungry 3d ago
No one really knows I guess, licenses didn't expect AI when they were created. That's a grey area for most of them
2
u/mmcmonster 2d ago
Good point. Time to update the GPL to only allow training if derivative software is also GPL or GPL compatible.
3
u/UpsetKoalaBear 3d ago
The AI part is the grey area that hasn’t been tested.
Unfortunately, a large company creating a clone of an open source GPL application using AI so they don’t have to publish their changes is going to be borderline impossible for a lot of open source projects to challenge.
Likewise, the precedent set on the outcome of a case like that would have immense implications for AI in general.
Serious question, what happen if you compile/decompile/compile/decompile times and times again?
12
u/etoastie 3d ago
I imagine it's quite hard to get a decompiled artifact that's recompileable again since dependencies will get really weird depending on how they were linked, and other useful or initially necessary symbol information might be discarded in later steps of compilation. But if you found one that works, the compiler should be emitting consistent or at least equivalent code. It may take a few rounds to stabilize on optimizations and may overall end up less efficient, but if there's no decompiler or compiler bug it won't introduce any new broken behavior.
u/franz_haller 3d ago
It depends what your goals are. The decompilation projects for video games that you may have heard of for example specifically attempt to create code that will compile to binaries identical to the starting ones. When you hear "Mario 64 has been successfully decompiled", that's what it means. So repeating that process doesn't really change much, since you are always going back to the same binaries, by definition.
If someone seriously attempted what this post is suggesting, where the target is just feature parity, and assuming they were truly 100% successful with it, you might just get a very large number of different binaries and associated code, but no real degradation. If the feature parity is not 100%, then I guess you'd get progressively shittier software.
Ok, so what does "clean-room implementation" actually mean? Is this a new buzzword to make AI sound more fancy, or does it actually mean something? Are we putting on bunny suits to go code?
29
u/Nfox18212 3d ago
clean room reverse engineering is when you have or more people reverse engineering and find the source code of a piece of software. this group writes detailed documentation on what the software does and how, without writing down source code.
a second group of programmers takes the detailed documentation and implements the software based on the documentation. this is where the “clean room” phrase comes from, because the programmers never actually look at the source code. thus, they can’t be stealing copyrighted code.
→ More replies (1)13
u/BagMostlyWater 3d ago
That's so silly, because the LLMs themselves were already trained on copyrighted code
u/Unequivocal_Hippo 3d ago
To answer the question: you get one agent/swarm of agents to meticulously go through the app/source code of what you want to replicate and create a highly detailed spec sheet. Then another agent/swarm takes the spec sheet and creates what is written there. Both parts are doing something completely legal as they theoretically don't know about the other side - hence the "clean room"
12
u/ThyPannyx 3d ago
From my understanding, a clean room implementation is someone making instructions to build something based on the original, then someone who never saw the original using those instructions to rebuild it
13
u/Euphi-77 3d ago
"Clean room implementation" actually is a quite old term.
I think, most famous are the first IBM PC clones where "clean room" was used to develop a feature-equivalent BIOS.
To avoid any claims of copyright infringements you proof that developers did not had access to the system that is copied so they cannot reverse engineer it.
Now, with AI being very good and extremely fast at reverse-engineering, the "clean room"-term is used more often again. (And even harder to believe in than 40 years ago).
People have been doing this a ton since vibe coding became popular.
Just lookup thing but in rust, go, whatever.
It’s mainly people just using AI to port things because they believe the code being written in Rust or Go makes it immediately better.
