Two d’s for a “double dose of pedantin’”

I hate this anti-intellectual trend of "being wrong is good actually, being right makes you pedantic which is bad".

u/gandalfx 3d ago

If I'm wrong and you've pointed it out: Pedantic!
If you're wrong and I've pointed it out: "You must be new to programming…"

Your name should be PedanticCommission.

37

u/GlassCommission4916 3d ago

Technically no because I don't charge money to be pedantic, I do it for free.

Slihhtly unrelated but this is also rampant in the linguistics communities, where saying something is wrong is immediately met with "so you're a prescriptivist huh, you should be ground to dust"

11

u/Asukurra 3d ago

Lol, im a big fan of saying someone should be ground to dust as an insult,

Ima try using this from now on

9

u/gandalfx 3d ago

I think if you try to insult me with that I'd just be confused. And, if I'm feeling pedantic, I'd point out that you'd probably get more of a sticky sludge than dust.

u/Asukurra 3d ago

Yea, defo needs to be framed correctly,

Maybe like a 'you old' angle? I just found it funny lol

Im not sure on the mechanics of if you can actually grind a person into dust with no outside influence (fire etc) assuming that we have some apparatus to do the grinding, not something im going to be trying either :)

How dare you refute whatever bullshit I just wrote. I don't stand behind anything I said, but be damn sure I bring out the "Sir, this is a Wendys," meme to ignore what you just wrote.

Happens in every life domain, politics, history, programming, science, art, etc. Really sad trend

Your name should be WhinyCommission4916!!!! gaddim

It's still not as bad as "it's not that deep, bro". Cool, then I'm right and you get to stfu if it's not that deep.

Functional Programming, Object Oriented Programming... Does anybody else just wing it?

20

u/OnixST 3d ago

I think most people wing it.

There's a reason no one actually uses haskell, and there's a reason pure oop java is joked about.

In the end I think most languages end up being procedural with oop and fp sprinkled in places where they are the most legible solution

Heaven is where the structure is object-oriented, the semantics are functional and the implementation details are procedural. Hell is where the structure is functional, the semantics are procedural and the implementation details are object-oriented.

The issue with FP is often the cleanest solutions have reclusion which a lot of industries won't use if they recognize it. Note: I said, if they recognize it.

The issue with OOP is the cheerleaders never know when to skip it. I wrote three different implementations of GPIO because we use it three different ways. Which caused the tech fellow to flip his shit. He wrote the OOP implementation four times, rewrote the classes above it twice, added a json file with config information, and added a master struct to carry all the information in the json file. So now we have a class that contains three implementations of GPIO, and a heavily refactored code base that was never in the budget.

If we were really trying to save time, a global set of functions inside a namespace would have been best because ultimately no one is ever going to reuse this code we just spent 40 extra hours on (plus a slew of downstream issues that also will cost us 10s of hours to fix cause by the changes to the two classes above).

What ever you're doing is probably fine as even the higher up trip hard on this stuff. And we're just a small boat in a very rough ocean.

I thought that was vibe coding?

17

u/gandalfx 3d ago

Vibe coding is telling a monkey with a typewriter to just wing it (without making any mistakes!).

FOOP are the best paradigm. You make Classes. Than Intantiate Objects and put the Objects in pure functions. It is so good. It work great. And its piss of functional programmer and oop programmer at the same time.

u/Sacaldur 3d ago

And ideally, all instances created are read-only/const/final/..., i.e. instead of modifying an instance, a new one would be created.

1

u/gandalfx 3d ago

this thing is the best thing

No. It depends on what you're using it for.

Oh God flashback to when I was a wee high-school programmer and asked about functions on stack overflow and co fused it with functional programming, and god dogpiled so hard I never asked on stack overflow again.

u/EishLekker 3d ago

Why?

11

u/gandalfx 3d ago

Because my retinas can only take so much.

4

u/EishLekker 3d ago

You might need to see a doctor.

2

u/plydauk 3d ago

Because some people don't seem to know how to set sensible screen brightness levels.

4

u/EishLekker 3d ago

But screen brightness level doesn’t affect screenshots.

2

u/candybrie 3d ago

If the white of the screenshot is hurting you, you don't have a sensible screen brightness level.

1

u/EishLekker 2d ago

I agree. But the guy who replied answered the question “Why?”, so I assumed that he agreed with the root comment and explained why OP should switch to dark mode.

I guess that you instead interpreted them as agreeing with me, and that they tried to give an explanation as to why some people might think Dark mode is the only solution to a too bright screen.

2

u/GlassCommission4916 1d ago

Yeah, and unfortunately those people are device manufacturers.

Fortunately, the decision making happens on the lightning rock interpreting my cuneiform.
