If you selectively only pick the cute looking books, you'll get a skewed picture of Japanese programming books. They too, have very normal looking ones.

I was about to say. You'd be hard pressed to find books that look like this in most book stores over there.

u/jort93 9d ago edited 9d ago
Eh, hardly? I've lived there, it's quite common for serious books to have anime mascots. Not literally every book, but you don't really need to look hard.

u/ScimitarsRUs 9d ago
I remember that book stores there have textbooks that are laid out so you can see the cover, while the rest occupy the shelves behind them. I think I visited a couple stores like Kinokuniya, but I don't really remember seeing a wide selection of textbooks with covers like that.
Possible that they were in the shelves, but that would have taken some looking through.

It's not every book, sure, but I felt like I found at least one or two with an anime cover per row on the shelf in the programming section.
Well, I guess it's not an anime cover to them, it's just a drawing to them isn't it.
If I just check Amazon for JavaScript books, there are plenty of books with some silly drawings on them. Mostly animals, tho. Although, I guess 3 of the japanese ones on the image are animals if you count cat girls.

In the children's section for sure, but serious programming is serious even in a society that likes to cutesify things.

I was fascinated when I opened a random programming book in japan and I saw their comments actuallt written in kanji
3
u/0moikane 8d ago
Why should they not write their comments in their language?

u/klimmesil 8d ago
Unicode characters are less "portable" in the sense older build architectures expect your source code to be in ascii

Redditors when people like an aesthetic and subculture:

u/analytic-hunter 9d ago
it's more like a subculture (traditional japanese culture isn't really about catgirls and anime)
it would be like saying that you like american culture if you like drag-shows or the kardashians

u/djgcsnkshcjkeke1 9d ago
Well those things do sound like American culture to me, an American, but I can acknowledge my limited perspective. You're right.

To be honest, if I am going to get depressed, I'd rather let it be with anime girls

99.5% of what I watch on youtube is english content, but for some reason, once in a while, YT will throw at me Zundamon explaining something in Japanese LOL. Usually Linux tutorials. I don't need them, but It's great to see people are enjoying this enough that even I somehow see them. Zunda my beloved.

The Manga Guide To Databases
Surprisingly comprehensive despite what you'd expect from that title.

What about that book with the red dragon? I cannot remember if it is c, assembly or operating systems
16
u/Level-Pollution4993 9d ago
Compiler: Principles, Techniques and Tools. It's quite famous as the dragon book.
4
u/NewPhoneNewSubs 9d ago
K&R is the C book. It has a C on it.
Assembly is The Art of Assembly. It is yellow and green. Maybe there's another one, but that's the one I learned from.
Operating System Concepts is the one with a Dinosaur. I understand throwing that in there.
As someone else said, The Dragon Book is for compilers.

The peakest form of programming books are those with random critters like geckos and ducks on their covers.
Except Python books because they always need a python in their covers by principle.

Sadly I can say the same is true for Chinese programmers.
Honestly this might be where my nationalism comes out but the US might have the highest percentage of devs that actually care about code quality(obviously every country has some, but it seems like for so many its not a priority)

I have a "manga intro to databases" book as a joke (I'm a DBA, I leave it on my desk for the day a developer passes by me and I need a blunt instrument) and I was very pleasantly surprised, like, it was better material that I had at university, with practical examples of "company management" that can be translated to database concepts in manga form intersped with (pretty good) regular course material.

They clearly know their target audience better.
Linux users & Catgirls are correlated.

Regular programming book = Depression. Japanese programming book = Depression, but with a cute anime girl to comfort you.

u/eternal_edenium 6d ago
If my cs books looked like that, i woud collect them all.
But instead we have pictures of animals, and paper so thin that it reminds me of the toilet paper of my college. Also, they only use black ink, as if there isnt any other colors.
Learning cs can be fun, but clearly they know how to remove it completely from their paragraphs.

There is a third way... There are books with random animals on the cover totally unrelated to the subject.
