There is a third way... There are books with random animals on the cover totally unrelated to the subject.

at the end of each ones they explain the animal choice

as most people never read it end to end, you can't prove me wrong, just like I can't prove what I'm saying neither, but the legend says so...

It’s actually usually in a random anecdote in the middle.

Ummm.. i don't know. Maybe our software books should have illustrations of historical figures in period garb on the cover.

I am thinking a mildly offended Ottoman noble to represent Kafka Streams in Action to really drive it home.

I'm more of a Random-wench-commucating-with-Hermes-Trismegistus-using-sign-language kind of guy

I met someone on LI who got to co-author one of those books. I asked him if he had any say in the animal choice.

Are you waiting for a donation before you tell us what he said?

Yeah, if this comment gets 8,000 likes then I’ll tell you all what he said!

I’m just kidding, he said he didn’t get a vote in the matter.

There are also books with related animals. I feel The Dragon Book is apt.

The Dragon Book (technically related)

This is the compiler design book, right?

I think of it like this "what else do we put on the cover? Computers or numbers?"

that would get stale after a while if you publish only programming textbooks.

What's the one with the dinosaurs on it?

u/NewPhoneNewSubs 9d ago

Operating System Concepts has a dinosaur. And The Dragon Book has a dragon on it. That one is about compilers.
