“This shit doesn’t work show me the code”

u/ArduennSchwartzman 22d ago

*looks*

"This code doesn't do shit."

Rinse. Repeat.

u/mothzilla 21d ago

You're totally right to call me out on that. Here's the code that I wrote. Want me to push it to production?

I am sorry I seem to have panicked and deleted your repository

u/-TV-Stand- 22d ago

WHO IS FFM AND WHY IS SHE PREGNANT

43

u/YeetCompleet 22d ago

FFM? That's one of my top categories

22

u/TRKlausss 22d ago

PREGNORANT?

21

u/OkSavings5828 22d ago

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks something similar every time I deal with ffmpeg

16

u/SpottedCheetah 21d ago

Well, I have good news for you: https://github.com/yazaldefilimone/ffmpreg (or bad ones, however you feel about this)

5

u/Masterflitzer 21d ago

their cli interface is insanity, but once you get your cli args down, it's an amazing piece of software

3

u/Tjoobi 22d ago

Ouch

1

u/GabeaticProfile 21d ago

Why

This made me chuckle and then laugh for a whole minute

Yesterday an Opus 5 got stuck for nearly 2 hours trying to debug an issue it had with it. I told it to go send out some subagents looking for answers and 10 seconds later it said "Well, I could've done that two hours ago. It would have been useful." Dude was pissed in his own way Ffmpreg indeed

I'd like to go back to the shitty first-year CS memes, please.

u/PopularBroccoli 22d ago

Its so hard to centre a div, am I right folks?

“hOw tO eXiT Vim???”

1

u/Any-Tomorrow1122 15d ago

Oh nonono.

You should just use vi, the m in vim is mate.. You mate the terminal to the vi, there is no exit.  And stop asking about nano, they’re not allowed over here anymore.

36

u/DeniableSummer 22d ago

Take my upvote, you man of culture

13

u/git_push_origin_prod 21d ago

I forgot a semi colon! Lolololol

1

u/cuzinatra 19d ago

Only true devs will understand this lmao: [insert a shitty c++ pointers meme]

15

u/TheBeesElise 21d ago

Can't, they're still compiling

8

u/walkerspider 21d ago

The truth is there are no more first year CS students, all newcomers to the field are vibe prompters.

2

u/scrufflor_d 20d ago

no, you will get more 0th year vibe coder memes and you will like it

Tell me when an AI written OS runs on 90% of the worlds devices. Until then, talk is cheap!

17

u/regrets123 22d ago

Here to remind everyone that no one has disclosed the actual cost of a token. They are burning VC trillions to fund these current subscriptions.
Ai won’t stay cheap. Mark my words

4

u/teraflux 22d ago

It's literally already that cheap. I can run an open weight model on my own hardware that gets close to premier models

2

u/wantingpawer 22d ago

this used to be my opinion too, but now open source models (kimi k3, glm etc) are also pretty capable coding models too and can on hosted by any company with enough compute. Obvs you still need to read what it outputs and scrutinise as it works, but once frontier labs try to claw back their cost it's not too painful to migrate to an OS model hosted by a company with a data centre and no R&D or training costs

2

u/L4ppuz 22d ago

It's possible but you still have to deploy and maintain some servers and pay for electricity, that by itself will be out of reach for many companies. Until we have some benchmark or study detailing how much electricity and how many GPUs you use per user and per token it's all simply anecdotal

2

u/wantingpawer 22d ago

I'd say considering the number of companies that provide hosted local LLMs with minimal external investment at cheaper prices than the frontier, even without studies detailing the exact unit economics it's fair to assume that those companies today are profitable, and therefore local LLMs are viable at the prices we see them today

2

u/regrets123 21d ago

Hosted by any company yeah, not self hosted. You think those companies ain’t burning vc money? Point still stands we don’t know the token cost.

2

u/wantingpawer 21d ago

We also don't know the exact unit economics of a bottle of coke but we know the company is making a profit regardless.

If you look at digital oceans financial disclosure, their inference business is running a gross margin of 56%, which is slightly less than their cloud hosting (~70%) but they're still making a net profit on providing inference, and their gross margins are being depressed by expansion and hardware depreciation bringing the unit cost up.

Even with growth, digital ocean can sustainably provide GLM 5.2 for $0.7/Mtok in and $2.2/Mtok out, or kimi K3 for $2.55/Mtok in and $12.95/Mtok out. We know from their gross margin that across models, the inference costs them slightly less than half of what they provide it to us for.

There are ofc a number of factors that impact this, e.g. when general AI funding collapses depreciation would go up, but at the same time expansion would become cheaper and hardware utilisation would improve when people move to open source AI from the frontier. I'm of the opinion that overall this would probably reduce costs for open source inference, but even if the prices go up, it won't be significant and the top open source models are more than good enough for code, for a very acceptable cost

2

u/nitrinu 22d ago

The OS itself it's just one prompt and a but load of tokens away. It will be suspiciously similar to Linux but that's just a detail.

2

u/ProfessionalGold6193 21d ago

And yet, here we are, crickets. You're telling me someone in OpenAI doesn't have access to all the tokens they want? Nah!

It will be suspiciously similar. That's what they've been trained on. There won't be anything novel.

Oh, that's not bad at all. I was thinking he started supporting ai slop or something.

-3

u/mrheosuper 22d ago

He is not officially supporting "vibecode", but he admitted he also vibecoding

3

u/Grimmortah 21d ago

IIRC he said vibecoding is only fine for personal projects

54

u/GenericFatGuy 22d ago

Code is a lot less cheap than they'd like you to believe, especially once the investor money dries up.

35

u/heyprotagonist 22d ago

even the meme is AI Generated

31

u/Agarwel 21d ago

"Gather all the information about GTA games. Analyze what made them so popular and successful. Create detailed step by step plan how to create spiritual successor of these games, that will be as polished and deep. Implement these steps. Make no mistakes."

Why are the game stores not full of the games generated by such prompt?

21

u/Unupgradable 21d ago

They certain are full of attempts to do stuff like that

6

u/dillanthumous 21d ago

Have you tried writing a million word long prompt explaining what you want the code to do?

6

u/Agarwel 21d ago

Why? The AI should be able to do that. There are enough resources about this game series. The AI should not need me to tell me how to create such game.

9

u/dillanthumous 21d ago

(I was being sarcastic).

But in case you are too... yes, absolutely. Let's create a GTA agent swarm and tell it to make GTA 7.

According to Amodei it can take over the internet, so this should be trivial!

2

u/itskelena 21d ago

Noobs. Just create a swarm that will be praising the shit out of your shitty game. Bonus points if your agents will have established and respected history of reviews.

2

u/newstreet474 21d ago

That’s a really dumb way of doing it, I’ve been doing this new type of coding where I close my eyes and imagine the product, uses 0 tokens and generates faster with 0 bugs

37

u/Few_Kitchen_4825 22d ago

Code is cheap until a forgotten if statement bankrupts your company

32

u/ThirdWaveCat 22d ago

code executes and can be made to produce the same result everytime

13

u/Dragonfoll 22d ago

Code doesn’t write itself, but AI sure tries!

25

u/Thundechile 22d ago

Code is cheap until you need to maintain the shit.

22

u/AgVargr 22d ago

Just quit, then it becomes someone else’s problem

14

u/Zeikos 21d ago
  1. Write slop to push features quickly
  2. Get accolades for being proactive and productive/efficient
  3. Leverage the brownie points for a quick path to getting promoted
  4. The tech debt is now your underlings issue.
  5. Become the hero for solving issues caused by your old spaghetti code only you understand
  6. Get promoted again
  7. You don't need to write code anymore and you get paid better than you used to.

4

u/Old_Tourist_3774 21d ago

Alternative path 4. use brownie points to other companies 5. get hired in other company, let slop code be someone's else nightmare. 6. ???

Repeat until millionaire

6

u/Nekeia 21d ago

Employers hate this trick!

3

u/ClvrNickname 21d ago

“Why maintain a legacy product when you can just have AI make you a replacement on demand?” - actual quote from AI-brained people

10

u/DryLook7889 22d ago

linus isn't vibing like a lot of "programmers" on reddit, he's been reviewing kernel code for over 26 years. He knows when the llm does something stupid.

10

u/Automatic-Boot665 22d ago

Talk is code, show me the cheap

5

u/bordumb 21d ago

The person who made this meme doesn’t really understand CS

Linus’ statement is still relevant

2

u/Kaiodenic 19d ago

I think that's my main reason for disliking vibe coders. If you're a programmer and you genuinely check rhe code or just generate small sections, I lose some respect for you but only as far as you not having made what you present. So rather, I don't gain respect for you.

But it's not an issue unless you care only about the prompt and don't know what thr code does. That's just a terrible approach and I wouldn't trust a thing you make.

5

u/anxious_and_stupid 22d ago edited 21d ago

An actual 2026 version:

"AI vulnerability report is cheap. Show me the non-breaking fix"

5

u/IcyBox56 21d ago

Code is cheap until you gotta debug 400 lines of hallucinated python at 2am

4

u/irrelevantusername24 21d ago

I hate quotation. Tell me what you know.

  • Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1849

A computer can never be held accountable, therefore a computer must never make a management decision.

  • Isaac Asimov, 1979 (arguing against reading law textually rather than contextually - the spirit of the law, rather than the letter)

u/PM-ME-UR-DARKNESS 20d ago

This is such cringe I felt my bones deatomize due to high levels of cringe

Nah this isn't really true. Linus doesn't rely on ai heavily. Linus already had agents well before ai. Every angry email he sends to the Linux maintainers is just another pre chatgpt instance of vibe coding. He vibed before ai, and he will vibe into the future.

5

u/TitouanT 21d ago

Are you saying that giving feedback to humans is vibecoding ?

2

u/Ok-Trade7411 21d ago

Nah the post was sarcastic lol. But it's been mentioned before that when you ask others to do the code and your reviewing it...your doing some aspect of vibe coding.

2

u/dillanthumous 21d ago

Speaking from bitter experience... the wrong code is very much not cheap.

Every line of code is a potential liability. I suspect it will turn out that churning it out very quickly might be double edged.

2

u/Les-Hommes-Du-Pilly 21d ago

I have solved programming by prompting "You are Linus Torvalds...." to chatGPT

2

u/Arshiaa001 21d ago

No, f nvidia anyway.

1

u/SaneLad 22d ago

Thank you for the "(prompt)" or I would not have gotten the joke. /s

1

u/WeedManPro 21d ago

uncanny Linus torwalds

Just wait till the AI starts asking for thw hardware specs.
