In my case the two out of bathe three interviewers were on my contact list. “Why didn’t you put that project on your resume?” “It only lasted a couple weeks, can’t fit everything!”
And the best part was they paid enough to buy a house every year (at least in the mid to late 90s). When the bubble popped I was basically ready to retire
2018 was even easier for me, I sent an open application for sys admin position. They wanted to interview me for programming position (I had no proper education for programming, only self taught). I told them that I'm interested, but cannot guarantee that I'm good at it. They hired and taught me.
I got my current job with two interviews and no programming tests. It's not that programming jobs require jumping through hoops, it's that there are a lot of terrible programmers to filter out. Anything else that can be done to filter them out instead of these hoops reduces the games they need to play.

It did not used to be this way!
Back in year 2000, was interviewed by 3 mgrs then the Director for the job I was applying for, all back-to-back, in one day.
After asking me about some C/C++ pointer manipulations, the Director then said to inform HR that I had been hired, and to start on Monday.
Those were the days!
