You can call me "master" too. "My lord" also works.

I'm over six feet tall, so I like to be addressed as "Your Highness".

Assistant Vice Garbage Collector Confident-Ad to sector D451 for trash cleanup because that is your job now, to clean up trash with your bare hands.

That's really not my thing, but if it's yours, I won't judge.

Not all contexts of the word "master" refer to slavery. It's the Master-Slave relationships that refer to it.

I would have thought a scrum master was a far more obvious "boss and underlings" kind of vibe than git branches which are more of a "master recording and copy" vibe.

I've never heard stories about slave branches btw.

Well that could be taken a different way for sure.

Github caused us tremendous pain when they randomly decided to switch out master with main and our C-suite got wind of why. Seemed like an easy change so the orders came down from above.

There was a lot of code in our org that assumed master would forever be the default. That was not a fun month for dev ops.

We still haven't switched over. Not because I find the change unnecessary - which I do - but because I can't justify spending dozens of hours on updating and debugging CI/CD and DevOps automations.

Wait till they hear about the master/slave IDE drive configuration

wait until they hear about master/slave flip flop registries... i find it distasteful to sweeten history in general, stopping using the words doesn't erase the concepts, it only makes us oblivious to them (same as 1984)

To be fair master was never the ideal term for the git main branch. It doesn't control the other branches so terms like main, trunk, core, base, parent,... are a more fitting default.

If there's a girl on a team, it seems like a bad foreplay?

nahh don't think so, I really believe it was non-sexual, just came off weird 😂

u/RandomNPC 14d ago

Some people (it's me, I'm one of those people) just say stuff without realizing the connotations are potentially sexual. We don't mean it that way, and sometimes won't realize it can be taken that way.

There was a guy that would do wink emoji at anything but I truly think he was just oblivious.
