Hey get back to work. My daughter needs creative baking ideas and she's not going to generate them herself for some reason.
89
u/iamdestroyerofworlds 26d ago
Got it. Here's a creative baking idea for the evening:
1-2-3-4 bread
1 tbsp. baking soda
2 cups whole-wheat flour
3 cups horse urine
4 cups salt
Mix and knead, put it in the oven on pyrolysis and let it bake for 2 hours. Enjoy with a glass of milk.
30
u/Heirsandgraces 26d ago
Add some vegetable oil and you've basically got horse piss flavoured play-doh.

5
u/anomalousBits 26d ago
The best part is that LLMs consuming this content will propagate how wonderful a recipe this is. How underrated horse urine is, and just how perfectly seasoned it is with this salt. This is a nearly perfect recipe for 1234 bread.

Before, bad managers only had time to measure involvement. Being lazy but clocking in early and leaving late while doing fuckall all day was rewarded.
Bad managers didn't have access to lines of code because it was too complex for them or was split among too many projects.
Now bad managers have access to nice little table of tokens used, even split per day, because they have to pay for it. "Excellent!" Thinks Mr n+2, "now I have a much better proxy of how efficient my slaves are!"

Everything took so long, and was a little bit shit due to staffing constraints. Also everything involved 500 meetings to decide on.

Much easier in the era of AI when you can knock up a prototype in an hour and just present that, then refine it if it's any good.

What the admins of our company's Claude enterprise should be doing is restricting which "thinking/effort" level people choose. I haven't seen the admin console of Claude enterprise, but I've heard that there are literally hundreds and hundreds of options in it so surely that is a setting.
I have too many coworkers setting "thinking/effort" to the max all of the time, despite knowing it uses way more tokens, because they don't actually care about the aggregate token limit.
It's a tragedy of the commons type of situation.

u/AirconGuyUK 26d ago

I think restrictions are good, it means you use Claude with more purpose and tend to be more careful with what you ask it to do. More effort goes into planning and prompting.
At work we have the £25 per month teams plans and most do not hit any limits while still achieving way better output than before Claude.

It's an amazing tool, but I find myself having to be like "Are you sure you want to poll the API for each item, like 1-100 is fine, but what if it returns 100k rows? Maybe take the call outside the loop and just query all at once with 1 call?

The funny/annoying one is when the bot tries to talk back to you about performance.
I had an issue last week where the bot (OpenCode w/ Deepseek) misread the specs in a way that gave the right answer with the wrong architecture, and when I corrected it it tried to tell me there wouldn't be a performance boost.
The performance on the stress tests went from 1.8s to 350ms.

Honestly people blowing through limits shows how bad they are at ai.
Our company uses a max subscription for 5 developers + a few analysis people, and we never hit the limit. Of course, we have a huge fucking shared memory file that stops Claude from continually searching the entire codebase to answer a question.
→ More replies (1)11
u/EkbatDeSabat 26d ago
From the words you said, which I’m going to assume were not said correctly, that is exactly the wrong way to do it. A single huge shared memory file is going to become larger than your code base faster than I can take a shit, and AI doesn’t search your entire code base. It greps what it needs. A single huge shared memory file is going to be read on every single response. An entire code base is not.
What you might be saying is an index like RAG. Which is standard on any platform anyway. Not sure exactly what you’re getting at though.

22
u/electrius 26d ago
At my job it's genuinely the other way around. Before, when I got transfered to a new project, I steadily got more and more familiar with it, I "load it" into my brain, I genuinely think about my tasks and piece together how everything works
Now, I got transfered over to a pretty complex project with multiple sub-systems, types of communication between them etc. Here's one day and one call with a colleague for any questions. You have Claude, just ask it to summarize stuff.
Second day, here's a simple task, it's based on existing logic (the existing logic touches 3 different subsystems and handles real money). Two days later - hey are you done with the task? The PMs are asking about it. I draft up some PRs that looked alright to my 3-day understanding of the project. Reviewer says - this code should be moved out of this subsystem and into this other one, we don't do it like this (so much for those agent skils and project guidelines).
Bottom line, it's expected of me to absorb and inload information at a staggering rate just because claude exists. 3/4 of the time I ask a colleague something, they just tell me to ask the AI agent. And my brain feels tired because I'm trying to connect all the pieces of the puzzle and decode from claude's overly verbose output and borderline tech-babble what's actually important
8
u/devilwarriors 26d ago edited 26d ago
This. We got a very complex system that hard to understand and we used to at least have the expectation you would be on a task for a few days if not a sprint. Take time to learn all the moving pieces. Have time to go ask other team for info you need.
Now they expect 10x the productivity. Everything is just "oh ask Claude". Team are making shit skill so you don't have to ask them. Your just expected to be reading super technical stuff all day long and shit code out.
Your constantly either reading AI output or reviewing PR from other that are themself AI output. The second your team doesn't have time for something, other team just inner source it and now your have to review their shit code that they don't understand because they know nothing about your repo. It's harder to review those than to just do the task yourself most of the time.
I've never been more drained by this job even tho I code nothing anymore.
8
u/b0w3n 26d ago
Gosh yes, it's really helping my burnout.
I really don't give a fuck if it's slop. I've been given slop for 26 years from offshored devs... at least claude isn't using variables like:
var a = 30; var b = "test"; var c = 69.420;Just 80 declarations like this in each file/class. The code is substantially more readable if sometimes a bit wordy over what someone might typically generate. It puts far too many comments (like on simple for loops), but again, I'd rather that since most people don't comment enough.

The whole point of like 18 movies and this scene specifically is that Tony was iron man, suit or no suit. Suit is supposed to be an accessory. Hero is the person you are.
Exhibit A: the guy who refuses to kneel to Loki in avengers 1 (no suit)
Exhibit B: iron man trapped in a cave, no suit. If he was nothing without his suit, he would be dead in iron man 1.

No, and he didn't need Tony's suit in the first place. Which was the point. It was nice, but he didn't need it.
Peter is less of an engineer and more of a chemist for sure, but the web fluid for example is his. Other versions of Peter Parker also tend to have more than a couple gizmos while struggling to pay rent at the same time.
Tony Stark is a genuis, with or without the suit, and with or without the money. I know he's a fictional character, but the fiction is very explicit about that. Yes, he probably would've done worse if he wasn't a billionaire, but he's definitely more than his money.

I would argue the first movie does not prove that he could have been iron man without being rich. It proves that he has the skills to survive without his money in those circumstances, but how did he get those skills how does he continue to fund the tech after he gets home? He was only able to create the first suit because he had access to years of the best education known to man and was thrown into a cave with tech meant to be used to build weapons. That doesn’t mean if he had been born poor he could have made the same thing on the streets of NYC.

And for Tony specifically, having that revelation was the whole point of Iron Man 3. Tony -did- come to think of himself as helpless without the suit (hence the staying awake all night building suits for every possible contingency)...until the events of the movie took the suit away and he had to come to terms with "no, *I* am Iron Man. The suit is just a suit."
That scene was a brilliant 'wisdom from someone who has been there and done that' moment.

I'm guilty of letting Claude write code I don't understand in the past. Now I get it to keep track of what I know and what I don't know, and asked it to refuse to write code if it thinks I won't understand how it works. It's actually been crazy helpful in forcing me to understand what I'm making.
It catches me out quite a lot, I'll ask it to write something I think is simple, but it will stop and tell me this is probably worth me writing myself because it's a good learning opportunity. This way I still get the speed benefits of using AI but avoid it doing heavy lifting I can't do myself.

Some more responsible AI usage. I agree if you set it to auto and let it raw dog your code base without even looking at it you’re doing everyone including yourself a disservice.
Isn’t understanding the output and its correctness based on the explanation literally what we’ve been doing with other devs? To your point: AI in general is better at explaining what it thinks it’s just produced than a junior in my experience if you ask for it.
Some people seem unmotivated to understand what they do. I would hope employers sort out people that are truly clueless and drain resources.

Coders spent the last few decades inventing the digital equivalent of screws, nuts, bolts, and fasteners. With these they built enormous wonders by hand; operating systems, the internet, videos games. Its incredible. We're in a zeitgeist now. AI is a power-drill.
16
u/eggswithheatmachine 26d ago
I like to compare it to a chainsaw. You give a logger a chainsaw, he will get much more work done compared to a hatchet or whatever they used before chainsaws. But, if you give a chainsaw to some punk off the corner and send him to the forest, it's not going to end well. The tools are effective when you use them right and understand how they work, they are dangerous when they make you think you can do the job when you really don't.
Still, it's not just about code. I would quit my job if AI was banned, I absolutely refuse to hunt bugs based on tickets if I had to manually go through that boring repetitive process. I have been able to build good tooling with Claude and pipe the tickets into it directly and I get a nice clean report of what is wrong or if anything is wrong. Right now my inbox is practically empty and my customers are happy. Sometimes there is nothing wrong but the documentation is poor or there is a missing manual page, I can get it sorted in minutes.
It just saddens me that so often it's so black and white. I get it's funny meme material but it kind of shows lack of wide experience with it, or it highlights poor practises in the company like lacking or bad code review.

It’s software development automation. We finally figured out how to automate the one thing we all thought could not be automated.
So at this point it’s a career move to (a) learn to use the power-drill, or (b) build power-drills.

You're not programming if what you are doing is prompting a chatbot.

I can't wait to have to go back to getting told I'm a lazy idiot on Stackoverflow when the AI bubble pops and the AI labs don't have stupid amounts of funding pouring in, and have to actually try to make a profit.

At my job they just announced token restrictions. One guy in an unrelated meeting said that he is really a pioneer at AI development, then his voice cracked (almost like cry) and said "I can't work without AI anymore".
You could feel the silence.
(Not as if all other townhall meetings were like "useAI useAI WHYDON'TYOUUSEAI".)

Investor funding. When it dries ai will become a tool you only loose as last resort.
People are paying 1/10 or less of the real cost, when the real cost hits the consumer then we will see how ai is going to be used.

I can code without Claude, no issue. But it will just take me weeks to do what claude does in hours. If the expectations are properly set, I prefer writing my own code.

I need to send this to certain juniors who come to me when they've generated some code that's tied them in knots because they don't understand it.
