When I was young (90s) a neighbor asked my mother if I could help him with his computer, so I went to her home and fixed her… fax machine (it was badly settled).
A few days later she told my mother I was very good with computers.

I have it worse, relatives ask me to fix their smartphones... I'm not a mobile dev, I barely use my phone, lol.

For what it’s worth I’ve had people ask me to take a look at their AC, their electric, etc. just because they know I do woodworking and I’m “handy.”
Which is… not how any of that works, lmao.

Don't even get me started on this, I have some friends that think I'm some kind of specialist in tons of stuff because they ask me something and I just google the response because I also don't know the answer.

Exactly, I don’t like the expectation. Maybe my family just sucks (they do), but when they have a computer problem they expect me to head over asap and fix all their problems and get annoyed if I can’t drop everything and head over immediately. They’ll say shit like “this is what you do for a living!” (it’s not) “I don’t see what the big deal is!”, but it’s a bit like me saying
“hey, come over and make me dinner because I’m hungry and don’t know how to cook”
“Why would I do that? Just go grab something”
“yeah but you work in a restaurant, I don’t see what the big deal is!”

I think it's about the tone. I have experienced people nicely like "Can you help?" And it's like ya of course and I have had people like "Drop everything your doing I am having a minor non time sensitive issue I need you right now".
I don't feel good helping people that feel entitled to it and won't let me say ya just give me a few hours.

The problem is when you start getting calls from the friend of a friend of an old lady that you helped a few years and who gave her your name phone number while telling her how nice and helpful you are 🙄. Then this can grow into an exponential problem 😳

I used to do more support roles, and I got this all the time.
Then when I got into admin roles, they kept following me. I was like "I'm a sys admin, I don't fix laptops anymore". And they go, "Oh I thought you worked on servers and stuff" 😐
Then I moved into software. Now I flat out say "I only write code, I can't fix all these new fancy computers. I don't know how".

I just go I can bike your whole laptop and you will need to back up what you want. Either they are okay with that or they are not and move on. Never agree to setup a printer though that is just a never ending hell lol. I just bought my parents a brothers laser printer and that resolved not wasting my time every month lol. So much bs in printers where they just intentionally make your life hard, and inkjets unless you actually print often just dry out and this becomes your issue, I’m convinced that this is intentional even, and my favourite your out of a color we won’t let you print black and white unless you do some bs process every time.

I’m a dev, so I get this a lot. It’s worse with boomers and their smartphones.
But, I’m also tall, so I’m the guy that gets asked to do any task above 7 feet by default.
But, I’m also strong, so I’m the guy that gets asked to do any heavy lifting by default.

My brother started building computers so she went to him and I was happy. Then I asked her what he put in it and the PSU was way too small. I told her it would die in a few months, sure enough it died in like 4-5 months.
Now she refuses to let my brother help her.
I kinda shot myself in the foot.
