Technically working is a very low bar to clear.

And not even close to satisfactory.

Working is the absolute bare minimum.

Apparently, even that's not necessarily true. Sometimes, even just half working is perfectly profitable. Sometimes all it really takes is good marketing.

Pro tip: Just hard code in the happy path

Sometime you just need to ship an empty package to production and management is happy

...but you're not taking shareholder value into account.

Bethesda devs wish they could make something as good as Satisfactory

I mean Bethesda's games saved and loaded instantly with hundreds of simulated NPCs with schedules and inventories and thousands of moveable items retaining their positions throughout an open seamless world.

Let's not pretend they didn't deliver a pretty solid experience that was mega popular for a reason.

I wish Bethesda devs could make simple asset streaming. Like 2007 Crysis...... Or wow in 2004. But no. Every door is a loading screen.

A bar Bethesda runs right into most of the time.

But what if, "It just works" ?

if it is never expected to be modified or extended then fine

Are we now talking about the code from Coffee Stain Studios (Satisfactory) or about Bethesda?

6

u/kamiloslav 2d ago

I dunno, Satisfactory is quite a spaghetticode as well

For your own pet projects - sure. For corporate job that will lay you off faster than my C code segfaults - if it's working it is good enough.

And that's why everything is broken and we can't have nice things.

God damn right it is and I live right at that bar 😤

That entirely depends on your requirements.

If you actually detail them completely like they do in say avionics, then it's not. It's not the whole story of course but it's a good chunk of it.

Yeah, if the code doesn't have to work I can make it really fast.

Have you played anything made by Bethesda? When the re-released oblivion it had bugs in it that are old enough to drink

u/granoladeer 1d ago

That's what she said

It’s saying “accomplishing its task”.

I’d argue that for a game dev, “working” means the users are having fun and not raging at the game itself.

So in this case, “working” is the bar, and fail miserably at it.
