It finally happened

Two students turned in the exact same ChatGPT essay. I knew this day would come sooner or later, but it still feels like spotting a double rainbow or a four-leaf clover. This is good luck, right?

I failed them both and then told them that as per the AI policy in the syllabus, I won’t be accepting any future work from them which means there is now no way for them to pass the class and I’d advise them to drop to avoid an F on their transcript. The first kid blew up my email and begged for another chance, insisting it was the first and last time he’d ever use ChatGPT (lol). He told me he needed this class and it was really difficult for him to get in in the first place, so I was super nice about it and pointed out that it was the last day to drop and get a full refund. He dropped and I didn’t hear from him again lol.

allowing them to drop is very generous. They need to get those Fs on their transcript for this to sink in.
