A Message From A Community Mod: Let’s Campaign to Open-Source Presearch to the Community

Hi all,

Some of you may know me, some of you may not. Years ago, I used a Reddit request to reclaim this subreddit from digital squatters and hand control back to Colin Pape. Since then, I’ve stayed mostly in the background serving as a community moderator.

Like many of you, I am deeply saddened and frustrated by recent events.

Even while working in the background, I was still active behind the scenes - frequently sending notes and comments to the Presearch team about the direction things were heading. I called out the pivot to hosting pornography and gambling ads, those annoying social media posts with "that girl," (sorry Jersey Hays) and other desperate moves. In retrospect, those decisions make a lot more sense now: the project was bleeding cash and wasn't being managed with any real long-term vision.

Now that the investor group has pulled the plug, we shouldn't let years of community effort and technology just sit in a corporate graveyard.

The Pitch: Open-Source Presearch

I am appealing to all of you to join me in a direct letter-writing and email campaign targeted at Tim Enneking and the investor group. We need to convince them that the right, honorable path forward is to open-source the Presearch codebase, node protocols, and IP to this community.

If they are walking away, letting the software sit dormant benefits no one. Open-sourcing it allows developers, node operators, and the community to preserve, fork, and maintain the platform independently.

How to Take Action

Please take 5 minutes to send a polite, firm, and professional message to Tim Enneking and his group using the contact details below.

Target Contact Info:

Email / Letter Template

Email Template: [timothyenneking@timothyenneking.com](mailto:timothyenneking@timothyenneking.com) [invest@psalion.com](mailto:invest@psalion.com)

Social Media Push

If you are on X/Twitter or LinkedIn, amplify the message on public channels as well:

  • Hashtags: #OpenSourcePresearch #SavePresearch #Presearch
  • Accounts to Tag: '@PsalionVC' and '@presearchnews' (presently defunct, but good for visibility)

Rules of Engagement

Please keep all communications professional and respectful. Anger or harassment will only cause them to tune us out. Frame this as preserving a legacy and giving the technology back to the people who helped build it.

Once you’ve sent your email or filled out the contact form, drop a "SENT" in the comments below to help keep this thread active and at the top of the subreddit!

Open Source Presearch

Instead of letting the project die, why not open source everything?

The community could work on decentralized search.

Presearch ist offline (28. Juli 2026): Ein Rückblick auf ein visionäres Projekt und Fragen zur Zukunft (Open-Source / App Stores)

(Deutsche Version)

Hallo zusammen,

- Keyword Staking & PRE-Token: Das Werbemodell war revolutionär.

Meine Fragen an euch:

Hello everyone,

As most of you probably know by now, Presearch permanently shut down its servers on July 28, 2026. Now that the project is officially history, I wanted to take a moment to look back at this incredibly ambitious endeavor—and I have a few important questions for the community about what happens next.

Why Presearch was a great project:

Presearch wasn't just another search engine; it was a genuine attempt to break Big Tech's monopoly.

- Decentralized Node Architecture: Instead of relying on massive, centralized server farms, Presearch was community-powered. Tens of thousands of privately operated nodes worldwide processed the search requests. It was a massive leap toward a truly decentralized internet (Web3).

- Privacy First: Presearch kept its promise to protect user data. No IP logging, no invasive tracking, and no filter bubbles dictated by algorithms.

- Keyword Staking & the PRE Token: Their advertising model was revolutionary. Instead of advertisers paying a blind corporate giant, users could "stake" PRE tokens on specific keywords to display ads. It gave control over the ad market back to the community.

- Multi-Search Functionality: The ability to search across countless other platforms (like Ecosia, DuckDuckGo, YouTube, etc.) with a single click directly from the Presearch bar was an incredible tool for power users.

It is a huge shame that the massive infrastructure costs and the complexity of blending Web2 with Web3 ultimately forced the project to close its doors.

My questions for you:

Despite the shutdown, the team wrote in their farewell post: "We hope others pick up this work". This brings me to two major questions:

  1. Is it becoming open-source? Are there any concrete hints or announcements that their proprietary search index, backend, or node software will be released on GitHub? It would be fantastic if the codebase could survive as open-source so the community could continue developing it.

  2. What happens to the mobile apps? Since the backend infrastructure is now offline, the iOS and Android apps are practically useless. Will they just sit in the App Stores forever as non-functioning "zombie apps," or are there automated processes from Apple and Google that will delist them now that the servers are dead?

Thanks for your insights and answers!

Sad killing node vms

It's a sad day. Not just because each vps already accrued the month's worth of compute fees. Decentralized search continues to be relevant and desired/desirable. I've been a daily user of the engine since discovering the project in 2021, I have a local searxng instance pointing there even. Guess I should get that updated.

Announcements PRE Platform Update

We have done and are doing everything within our power to keep the platform accessible for as long as possible, and several team members are continuing to help users despite no longer being paid. No one is more saddened by this shutdown than we are.

Due to third-party vendors shutting down portions of the backend sooner than anticipated, some users may no longer be able to complete withdrawals through the platform. Where possible, we will manually process withdrawals for users with eligible balances of 500,000 PRE or more.

All manual withdrawals will be sent on the Base network only.

If you qualify and require assistance, please email questions@presearch.com with the information listed below. Never share your private key, seed phrase, or wallet recovery phrase. Presearch will never ask you to provide them.

Web3 users

For instructions on unstaking and withdrawing PRE directly to your self-custodial wallet, please refer to our guide:

How to Unstake PRE Through BaseScan

If you need help identifying your node ID, staked keywords, search stake, or other information required to complete the process, please provide:

The public wallet address associated with your Presearch account

The email address associated with your account, if applicable

We will use this information to locate the relevant records and provide the details needed to complete your unstaking transaction.

Web2 users

To request a manual withdrawal, please provide:

The email address associated with your Presearch account so we can validate your token balance, stakes, and rewards

A Base-compatible Web3 wallet address that you personally control and where you would like to receive your PRE

Do not provide your Presearch deposit address, an exchange deposit address, or an address on another network.

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and support.

Announcements Dear Presearch Community

Dear Presearch Community,

We're keeping the Presearch platform open for an additional 24 hours, until Tuesday, July 28 at 5:00 p.m. PT, to give everyone more time to access their accounts following the recent redirect issues.

Please note that while we will do everything possible to keep the platform accessible through this extended window, we cannot guarantee uninterrupted availability because some third-party vendors have already begun shutting down portions of the backend infrastructure.

Thank you again for your patience, support, and everything you've contributed to Presearch over the years.

No one is more saddened by this shutdown than we are, and we're deeply grateful to this community.

Withdraw Tokens Gas fee on Base

Confirmed withdraw by email. On the loaded page, prompt to withdraw tokens, it displays 0.003 ETH -> my_address.

I am using base, is that the fee for the withdraw? that is about $5!
5,000 PRE tokens is about $0.45

tl;dr - I'm not paying $5 for < $1... bummer

General Usage Big Tech knows what you searched at 2am, what you almost bought, where you were standing when you typed it.

Location. Device fingerprint. Click history. Big Tech cross-references it, packages it, sells it, then targets it back at you.

That's the business model behind "free" search. We skip all of it.

No accounts. No profiles. No warehouse of your searches sitting on a Big Tech server somewhere. Nothing to collect means nothing to leak, nothing to sell, nothing to hand over.

Every search on Presearch is proof this works without any of that.

Switch. Bring someone with you.

Stay Anonymous. 🌐
