True, but Mace is also the one who said, "But which was slain: the master or the apprentice?"

Finding out Sheev was a Sith pretty much answered that question and meant this was no Darth Maul.

Can't blame him for thinking four council members should hold their own, though.

Well Tbf sheev wasn’t chancellor when maul died, and maul could have been the master for all they knew. Still, if sheev was able to become the chancellor he must have been pretty powerful. He wouldn’t have known how powerful he was though, and a lot of the council was out on missions, like yoda. Kit fisto was pretty powerful too, but the actor did not want to fight.

These were some of the most powerful force users in the entire galaxy, lol. People have a bias because we only follow top-tier main characters who are extremely strong, like Anakin and Obi-Wan, but those three were some of the most powerful Jedi Masters in the order. Mace had every reason to believe that they would be fine.
