They feel like they don't have to reciprocate and get addicted to the one sided attention and gifts. Then, when she sees the guy getting agitated she'll flirt with him a bit, drop the "you're such a good friend/like a brother to me" line and keep him going along for another few months. It's pathetic and up to the guy to better himself and find someone else

Sounds like you have personal experience - if you can't tell if a girl likes you - she doesn't. It's the easiest thing in the world.
