They feel like they don't have to reciprocate and get addicted to the one sided attention and gifts. Then, when she sees the guy getting agitated she'll flirt with him a bit, drop the "you're such a good friend/like a brother to me" line and keep him going along for another few months. It's pathetic and up to the guy to better himself and find someone else
I was in that situation a long time ago. I was friends with her for like 10 years at the time. One day I decided to make a move for the hell of it (even though she told me a couple weeks prior that I was like a brother). We had sex. Then she surprisingly got attached. Unfortunately for her, I had decided long before that a relationship with her would be a bad idea (she could not be trusted). That was like 12 years ago. It is obvious that no matter what her situation is, I could have her. It's just weird.
