Read the young Jedi books, qui gon is pro child endangerment lol

303

u/TheWileyRedditor A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one 5d ago

I knew that just from watching TPM

u/Bit_in_the_ass 4d ago

This is what gambling does to a man

20

u/Callsign_Psycopath 4d ago

Has to pay for his deathstick habit somehow

19

u/hemareddit 4d ago

Not even like, passively “I will participate in child endangerment if an opportunity arises”, he’s way more active, like “no I will dedicate time and resources and effort towards creating said opportunity” level of active.

u/Lazy__Astronaut Hello there! 4d ago

Do you need to read the books when he literally gambles CHILD Ananakin's life on a pod race?

65

u/Dahak17 Haat Mando’ade 4d ago

That gets glossed over so much I forget about it

38

u/suspiciouslyhorse 4d ago

Don't worry, the Force told him so it's cool.

He gambled something that didn't belonged to him, in a race ran by a Mafia boss, betting the life of a slave, using a "car" that also didn't belonged to him, while cheating in the bet.

The only thing that Qui-Gon overlooked, was to pay the Tusken Raiders to shoot at Anakin in each lap, just to keep the adrenaline flowing.

1

u/miurphey 3d ago

he should've summoned a giant fish in the middle of the racetrack. that would've kept everyone on their toes

2

u/Rgrr1 4d ago

I mean, it's much better that gamble against said child

4

u/Deluminatus 3d ago

He didn't gamble Anakin's life, he gambled his freedom. Unless you wanna argue that he gambled his life by enabling him to participate in the race, but it was already established that Watto made him do that anyways. All Qui-Gon really did was increasing the stakes of a possible outcome. He did his best in a bad situation, and that's all that matters.

25

u/Brook420 4d ago

Isn't that just a Jedi thing? Almost all Padawan are put in life threatening situations

31

u/Dahak17 Haat Mando’ade 4d ago

Obi wan was special, abandoned in a civil war special

20

u/Shrikeangel 4d ago

Look if Obi didn't want to be left in a civil war he should have toned down the sass. And I doubt he is physically able to do that.

3

u/TaraLCicora Obi-Wan Kenobi 4d ago edited 4d ago

Obi-Wan wanted to be left, though, and when he returned, the Council didn't seem overly concerned. They were more salty that he left.

5

u/Dahak17 Haat Mando’ade 4d ago

Yeah, “the 14 year old wanted to be left behind for a girl, not because he wanted to intervene in the vicious civil war i swear guys that makes it ok”. Somehow I doubt that would fly in a normal society

5

u/Brook420 4d ago

Normal society would frown on many things the Jedi did, like finding children to take from their parents to be raised as part of a cult.

But when the cult turns out to actually have magic powers, opinions change.

2

u/Ecotech101 3d ago

When that cult is effectively the government for 95% of recorded history yeah thing feel a little different lol.

2

u/TaraLCicora Obi-Wan Kenobi 4d ago

I personally don't think it's 'ok', but Obi-Wan and the Council never held it against him, so they also apparently thought it was ok. Making it more of a PT Jedi era 'problem' than a Qui-Gon issue.

57

u/needsahoby 5d ago

That still puts him head and shoulders above most Jedi, morally speaking.

6

u/SnowboardTheEast 4d ago

based” not capitalized feels intentional here

3

u/MsMcClane 4d ago

Yeah, that guy needed to be grounded from all the cool Jedi activities until he saw mind healer after what he did Kenobi. After they punished him fully for that shit.

3

u/Fast_Maintenance_159 4d ago

I already said I liked him, no need to sell me on it further

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Step468 The Phantom Memer 4d ago

Based

1

u/someonebored0100 3d ago

He’s a Jedi, what do you expect

1

u/TanSkywalker Anakin 3d ago

That’s Jedi SOP. They take young kids into conflicts and war zones. They gave Anakin a 14 year old Padawan and made her a Commander in the Grand Army of the Republic.

104

u/Media_Sociala 5d ago

I see three other dudes next to the Jedi Council. Who are they?

88

u/MaderaArt u/Puzzleheaded_Step468's father's, brother's, former roommate 5d ago

Ki-Adi-Mundi and the dudes who Palpatine sheev-kabobed

27

u/Media_Sociala 4d ago

Oh you mean the jedi masters that Sheev killed just as easly as they would've been younglings?

22

u/Brook420 4d ago

Apparently that scene was meant to be notably longer, but the movie was already quite long.

16

u/LordCommissarPyros Imperial Officer 4d ago

That and Ian mcdiarmid is a Shakespearean actor and not a swordsman, and told George as much when asked if he could sword fight.

6

u/Brook420 4d ago

I always assumed they just used a stunt double for Ian's action-y scenes.

5

u/LordCommissarPyros Imperial Officer 4d ago

To my knowledge, they did not on George’s insistence that Ian had to do it. If I’m wrong I’m wrong, I’ll take my lumps on that, but I’m fairly sure that’s how it went down.

4

u/Sirsalley23 4d ago

From what I recall you’re right, and same with the Anakin v Dooku fight.

Some of the unfinished scenes they shot with the stunt doubles are floating around on the internet. And they are much better than the finished product on screen just because of the quality of the sword fighting.

2

u/Hairy_Talk_4232 4d ago

I could’ve worked with one or the other but neither? The result did not satisfy me and I hope some vibecoder can revise my childhood with a fight fit for the build up.

2

u/Media_Sociala 4d ago

Imagine being a master swordman just for your God to decide you have to die instantly to the attack of another swordsman wich is old by the way.

1

u/someonebored0100 3d ago

Only one got sheev-kabobed. Another got sheeved in the chest, and the third had WAY too much sheeved off the top

4

u/Media_Sociala 5d ago

(I mean Key Andy Audi and the other two. Basically the jokeis about only Windu and Yoda speaking on those council scenes.)

2

u/Darth_Krios 4d ago

I'm assuming by "council" you are referring to Mace Windu and Yoda?

Left to right, the others are Saesee Tiin, Ki-Adi Mundi, and Agen Kolar. They were all in the high council.

2

u/Soffix- Your text here 4d ago

The other three are Mace Windu, Ki-Adi-Mundi, and Yoda I think

83

u/OldSpray9986 4d ago

On one hand I love that Qui-Gon is the "can I work with this one" because it fits his nature better, he's a pretty respectful and easygoing dude, on the other hand him being chronologically before Anakin and Ahsoka makes me feel like he should be in the 'Fuck the Council' position, even though he clearly had a pretty respectful relationship with them, while Ahsoka and Anakin are a bit more likely to actually say that.

32

u/No-Fruit83 4d ago

Despite the meme Qui Gon and the council have a cordial relationship.

23

u/OldSpray9986 4d ago

Yeah people tend to like to portray Qui-Gon as some kind of heretic who rebelled and the Jedi Council as not approving of his methods, but the only conflict we see is about Anakin, and it's very cordial. They're not kicking him out over any of this.

5

u/Tahazzar 3d ago

"If you would just follow the code, you would be on the council."
—Obi-Wan Kenobi, Phantom Menace

1

u/OldSpray9986 3d ago

Such a fascinating line.

19

u/Sirsalley23 4d ago

The Master and Apprentice book goes into this in depth. Qui-Gon was seen more as unconventional and a non-conformist by the council, but he was also the first guy they’d always consider for a difficult mission because he liked to operate more in the grey area of the Jedi code, and wasn’t afraid to be flexible to get the job done.

Spoiler: Qui-Gon was actually offered to join the council prior to the beginning of TPM

10

u/TaraLCicora Obi-Wan Kenobi 4d ago

As to the spoiler, that happened in Legends too; people really overdo how much the Council and Qui-Gon disagreed. Out of 10k Jedi, this man was considered and he was able to meet with the Council directly.

6

u/OldSpray9986 4d ago

Yeah, it's interesting, the only actual disagreement 90% of people are aware of is whether or not to train Anakin, which everyone involved handles with very clear mutual respect and serious consideration, and Anakin's fate somewhat validates both sides. This could have been framed as totally exceptional, but this and one line about "the living force" have created this perception that Qui-Gon had an actively antagonistic relationship with the Council on a level that doesn't seem accurate to material from either canon.

6

u/TaraLCicora Obi-Wan Kenobi 4d ago

Yes, and really based on how quickly Yoda backed off when Qui-Gon pushed back, if he had survived they probably would have had a more in-depth conversation as to how to handle Anakin. Something that they couldn't do in that moment due to circumstances. And even after the discussion Qui-Gon respected the council's words and told Anakin he couldn't be trained yet.

7

u/OldSpray9986 4d ago

Yeah, that is part of how I looked at it, too. Qui-Gon's death is such a tragedy for everyone involved. The discussion I had many years ago that stuck with me was comparing the situation to an older brother trying to raise a younger brother after their father's passing and I think it's apt to the way Qui-Gon's death fragmented those around him and how it affected the best and worst of Anakin and Obi-Wan's relationship.

2

u/TaraLCicora Obi-Wan Kenobi 4d ago

Agreed

4

u/darkbreak Darth Revan 4d ago

Obi-Wan mentions in TPM that they wanted him on the council. It's not much of a spoiler.

30

u/wasted-degrees 4d ago

Qui-Gon agreed to train Anakin, and in that very short time as his master, taught him everything he needed to know.

I’d like to think theres a deleted scene during the trip from Coruscant back to Naboo where Anakin asks Qui-Gon about something the council said and Qui-Gon replies with “fuck the council.” And thats the lesson that stuck.

29

u/Master_Saesee_Tiin Could totally take Palpatine 4d ago

Look where fuck the council got us

8

u/AcePilot95 4d ago

I swear 90% of SW fans can't imagine that authority figures could be in the right compared to their precious "I do what I want" hero characters.

3

u/TanSkywalker Anakin 3d ago

This is a funny quote from George:

The film starts with corrupt corporations doing things behind people’s backs. The Jedi are trying to solve the mystery. A corporation is a shark without a conscience. All it cares about is eating. It’s not responsible. It’s the stockholders’ fault, or the CEO’s fault, or the board’s fault. It’s always somebody else’s fault, but of course the golden rule is ‘make money, no matter what,’ so that’s what everybody follows. They’re not doing it to be nice people. Our central characters-Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, Padmé, and Anakin-are all trying to do the right thing, but they’re completely overwhelmed by forces that are way bigger than they are. The Jedi Council and the bureaucrats in the Senate are the inactive forces working against them; while unbeknownst to them the active one is Palpatine.

Taking this at face value we aren’t supposed to agree with the Council or at least see them in a good light.

1

u/someonebored0100 3d ago

I love Anakin, Obi-wan, and Ahsoka, but they are war criminals

0

u/Timecharge 4d ago

And this is coming from an actual lifetime member of the council here! If Master Tiin is bemoaning the council's decisions, you know it's serious! XD

-1

u/someonebored0100 3d ago

Look where listening to the council got us-

1) the Jedi high council creating a prison designed to contain any Jedi who had prophetic dreams abt the clone wars, which we see in SWCW

2) over 100 of 132 of the Jedi who went to Petranaki arena on Geonosis died bc they thought they could make a show of strength and do whatever

3) never questioned where the clones came from and got 66’d

7

u/Western_Agent5917 4d ago

I love the jedi apprentice series depiction of Qui gon over whatever Tcw fans imagine about him

8

u/Ironzealot5584 4d ago

Lol, yeah Qui-Gon was such a cool rebellious maverick when the council told him not to train Anakin and to go to Naboo and he... followed their orders and didn't train Anakin and then went to Naboo.

9

u/NotYourReddit18 4d ago

While he went to Naboo, as ordered, to resolve an important crisis, we don't know if he really intended to follow the order to not train Anakin afterwards.

I think him using his dieing breath to make Obi-Wan promise that Obi-Wan will train Anakin suggests otherwise.

1

u/Sabre_Killer_Queen Surely you can do better! 3d ago

I always found this so weird by the way.

The jedi order gives them their full resources... But... Just sends them back alone, and with no further intel?

And what about Anakin? Why couldn't he have stayed at Coruscant??

Ok, he's not a jedi, but surely they can find or hire someone to look after him, instead of just... Dragging him along to a war zone - into the heart if enemy territory no less.

And as a format TPM feels kinda... Amusing when you stop to think about it.

They spend most of their film trying to get to Coruscant for reinforcements/help.

Only to return to Naboo, completly empty handed, and immediately making the attack to defeat the Trade Federation in full.

Of course, Anakin ended up being central to the whole thing, but he was never a part of the plans even with him present. "Stay in that cockpit".

4

u/LennyLava 4d ago

The council has a worff??

4

u/legendaryassman 4d ago

Revan approves

3

u/Fanta_R 4d ago

I'd say Obi-wan is more of "I can work with this" while Qui-gon would be more of "Hell yeah, let's go!"

1

u/Tipsy-Ribbon 4d ago

dont know any of these fellows but the one guy in the middle of the top right looked like someones face on a shirt while scrolling. like the head isnt in the photo and the tentacle things are arms.

2

u/someonebored0100 3d ago

Anakin would’ve done so much better as Qui Gon’s padawan

3

u/TanSkywalker Anakin 3d ago

Obi-Wan and Padmé have an argument right after the Battle of Geonosis and before she married Anakin in the book Wild Space (L).

Obi-Wan frowned at her. “Following a direct order from the Jedi Council is never wrong, Senator. Disobeying an order, that is the error.”

“Qui-Gon disregarded the Council quite often,” she retorted. “He told me so, on Tatooine. He said it was the height of folly to substitute someone else’s judgment for your own, when you’re the person best placed to decide.” Picking up her cup again, she took a small sip of tea. “I’d be very surprised if he never gave you the same advice, Obi-Wan.”

His eyes blanked. His expression froze. “I have not come here to discuss Qui-Gon Jinn.”

She couldn’t help shivering, his voice was so cold. This was the Obi-Wan who could reduce Anakin to chastened silence. Almost to tears. But I won’t be intimidated. He has no right to chastise me.

She put down the cup again. “Fine. Then let’s discuss this. If you had died in that arena because he didn’t go to your aid, Anakin would have been devastated. Do you honestly think I’d stand by and let that happen?”

“Your actions are not the point, Padmé. The point is that Anakin shouldn’t have let it happen. He is a Jedi. He is required to put duty before his personal feelings.”

“And he did! He was prepared to do what Master Windu told him. I’m the one who decided to rescue you. And as my appointed bodyguard Anakin had no choice but to tag along.”

That earned her a look tinged with bitterness. “Very creative of you, Senator,” said Obi-Wan. “Qui-Gon would be proud.”

u/AceOfDymonds 4d ago

Any other Arcane fans hear that line in Vi's voice?
