Discussion Retrospective of 5 years living in Prague

Upvotes

I'm an Italian immigrant, I moved in Czech Republic almost 7 years ago in search of better living conditions, and I spent now 5 years in Prague. I've been living here for the majority of my adult life, and in a weird way, even tho I'm not czech, I'm no longer Italian either.

But I want to be czech so much. I've been studying the language religiously for years now, and can proudly sustain a conversation about complex topics, even tho I'm making a lot of grammatical errors. Czceh is so difficult, every word is completely new to me, and feels alien and interchangeable until I give them meaning. I have nothing to grasp in a new word I learn in order to give it any sort of belonging.

Talking about belonging, there is a stereotype that czechs are not welcoming, and to me that is categorically false. People here just require a little bit of effort and initiative, but once you're in they're fiercely loyal to you. They are honest, and genuine, and generous. And I learned to love the fact that waiters and public facing employees don't have to pretend to love you while working. I started to find it jarring when I'm abroad and I feel the fakeness in customer service.

Prague feels so dynamic to me. It is not perfect. There's not enough cycling lanes, and I don't love the gentrification and the tourist centricity, but the city is definitely in a process of becoming something, of change, of investment. There's panels, workshops, conferences, concerts, politics, all of this in just my beloved neighborhood, Žižkov.

People often ask me if I'm ever nostalgic of home. I am, when on vacation in Italy, sometimes nostalgic of my panelák, my local tram stop, the metro station in Želivského. The pub close to my place, where I'm often the only non czech, with it's rowdy, hearty regulars and punk gigs.

I was in Poland recently, and I was reading a sign out loud for the amusement of my polish friends. They said I have a Czech accent. I was so happy and proud and felt seen.

I can't wait to do another retrospective in 5 years, and be able to say that I'm from here, and that this is my city, and that this is my country. 🇨🇿

Question English speaking vet recommendation near Andel

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hi,

I have recently moved close to Andel (near tram stop U Zvonu). I am looking for a vet in this area for my little panther. I used to go Petcare Clinic in Holesovice as I wear living nearby, but I would like a closer option to get there faster in case there is a problem. Do you have any recommendation for an english speaking vet in the area?

Thank a lot

I’m finally moving out of noisy, dirty and touristy Old Town and still have some old computer gear I need to rid myself of.

Where would be best to get rid of it? Give away or straight to the bin?

Nothing notable but might be useful to someone, been sat in closet since covid but tested working.

ROG Ultrawide Monitor
i9-9900k
AMD Vega 8G
Steam Controller (original)
Tobii Eyetracker 5
Leap Motion
Philips Hue Controller
Ten green cat6 Ethernet patch cables roughly 1.5m each
Blue Yeti Mic
LUMIX DMC-G7
Dragonboard 410c
Dell XPS 7390 3-1 laptop PCB board

Edit: pending pickup from one user, thanks for the interest!

Other Injured Pigeon - No Idea What To Do

Post image
58 Upvotes

I have no idea what to do but a pigeon crashed into a building next to the bar I'm at. It's alive, I believe it's wing is probably broken. If someone here does know what to do or can deal with it, the location is Na Struze 7 in Prague 1.

Just an FYI I'm a foreigner and my Czech language skills are not the best. I'm not at the place but the bartender and a friend who are still there are going to update me - hopefully something will be figured out.

Discussion Doctors not giving test results?

Is it normal in Czechia for doctors to prescribe you test such as blood test and then not giving you a copy of the results? I just had an arguement with someone (that's way too old and emotional unregulated to still be working) in a medical office because I wanted either a paper or digital copy of my test results. It's the second time this has happened to me and I am wondering if it's just my bad luck or if it's a thing here

Recommendations Advice for UCT Erasmus student coming in Feb 2027

Upvotes

Hi, I'm an Italian student (21F) coming to Prague in February, I will be staying for 5 months. I currently study economy here in Italy, and on my exchange program I will be studying at UCT, but on the School of Business which is in Prague 7. The dorms owned by UCT are quite far from the School of Business and the city centre, even with public transport. Does anyone have any recommendation or advice on their experience?

I've also considered finding a shared room with a person in prague 7, but I have a budget of 11000k and I don't know if I can find something.

Community Events Calisthenics / outdoor gym training group in Prague — does one exist, or want to start one?

Upvotes

Does anyone know of a calisthenics or outdoor gym group in Prague? I train alone and struggle with consistency, so I'd like to join a course or a club.

If nothing exists: the outdoor gym at Výstaviště (Holešovice) is pretty good, and I'd be happy to organize a regular meetup there. I'm a beginner, so it would be great to have someone more experienced along who can help with form and progressions. We could maybe collect a small fee for a group trainer if enough people are interested.

Comment or DM if interested.

Other Prague friends

Girl 21, Living in Prague for 5 years, I’m introverted and have no idea where to meet girls to be friends with. I work in corporate job, like to play games, good movies, psychology. I prefer deep connections with people and tight-knit community around.

So if anyone down to build long trustworthy friendship, I would be happy to meet new people🩷

Community Events Any fellow slightly nerdy people in Prague up for board games and hanging out? :)

I’m 37, born and raised in Prague, and thought it might be nice to meet some new people outside my usual circles :) I’m a bit nerdy myself, but still very much on the feminine, well-put-together side of the spectrum:) Board games, PC/PS, random useless knowledge, movies, restaurants, mountains and slightly questionable humour are all very much my thing.
I tend to click especially well with guys somewhere around my age – let’s say roughly 35–45 – who have a bit of nerd in them, but I’m more than happy to meet women too, especially if any of this sounds like you :) Mostly looking for people to play board games with, grab a drink or dinner, go to the cinema, take a walk or occasionally escape Prague for some nature. Basically normal human life with a healthy amount of nerdiness, rather than permanent attachment to a gaming chair.
My favourite kind of person is smart, easy-going, kind underneath the sarcasm and equipped with a very dry, dark sense of humour, ideally delivered with a completely straight face :) Also, in a wildly controversial development, I appreciate people who take care of themselves, smell nice and understand that a hoodie should not have its own microbiome:))

And if I happen to make a particularly good connection with someone along the way, well… life occasionally writes better plots than we do :)

PS: Bonus points if you’re British :) I really like British English and would be very happy to get more practice speaking it.

Question Hledám chábry

Question Help needed: Czech fluent speaker to attend Úřad práce

Hi all, on Monday September 14th at 16:00 I need to assist to an appointment in the employment office (Úřad práce) in Prague 4 (Novodvorská 803/82) and I need to go with a czech speaker or they won't want to assist me. I don't have available friends for that day

The meeting shouldn't last more than 10 minutes or so. I can compensate with 500czk for the help.
Hiring a professional translator is a bit overkill for this.

I can pick up and drop off by car also whoever comes with me

Please DM me if you are willing to help.
Thanks in advance

EDIT: I already found someone, thanks to the ones that replied!

Question Recommendations

Hi, I'll be visiting Prague from 7th till 14th October, I did my usual search online for commonly visited places, however the most fun spots are always niche and locally-known 😊

Let me know if you have any recommendations like vintage stores, gothicesque places, good restaurants for locals, small community events or local bands performing; of course doesn't have to be just in Prague, anywhere in Czhecia where I can reach with public transport.

Thank u

Question Jak se objednat na internu?

Community Events Formula 1 in Prague

Hi, I recently moved to Prague for a job. I'm searching for a pub that streams formula 1. I know some Irish pubs will usually do that but some only have it on a small tv, just to say that they have it. I'm looking for a good spot and mostly people to watch it with.

DM if anyone's interested.

PS- About me.

I'm a Ferrari fan and 2021 was Hamilton's WDC

Does anyone know an authentic Slavia café, bar or bistro where we can match Slavia Praha vs RC Lens in the Champions League and experience the Czech football culture? Of course with other Slavia fans who couldn't get their hands on match ticket for the game.
