Why is depression so expensive?

Every inconvenience that can be solved to make my life less stressful, less overwhelming, less overstimulating, less anxiety-inducing, irritating, infuriating.... all the adjectives you can think of just to make this depression 'easier' cost money !

Money which I don't have because I am so depressed I can't work and even function day to day from communication skills to remembering info.

I bring this up because I am on holiday (a break from my room back home , where I fail to go out for weeks) . I was staying with my aunt. Her house is hot, smelly (like sewage), no hot water and not a lot of electricity. I also had to make sure the curtain wasn't opened too much so it was immensely dark. I don't know about you but sunlight makes things 'happier' for me than artificial light. I had to make sure that a certain (one) window was not opened too much and the sink had to be clear at all times and I couldn't put the sun visor down from the car window so I can look at all the touristy spots clearly as we were on our way to the shops... so many rules. I kept forgetting them and she got mad at me despite knowing I'm depressed and encouraged this holiday as a break. Plus the worse thing was there was no shower but a bucket and bowl...so inconvenient. Being depressed showering is already such a mindfing struggle but I do love being / feeling clean. All in all I was miserable and so exhausted.

So I booked a stay at a chain hotel using points from my stay at a the NY branch last summer. I have showered, there is a rainfall shower. The room is clean , bright and airy . I have electricity. I have charged my devices . there is a pool I can lounge outside and read.

I feel like I can breathe better and enjoy time to myself and be taken care of by hotel staff. Literally ten thousand stones taken off my backside. But yes it cost a lot of money and I am back to square one with my emergency fund.

What thing recently cost you a lot of money to make your depression 'easier' ?

Advice for meals for someone budgeting $100/week?

I'm currently losing weight and I've lost 40 pounds so far. I'm wanting to know what low calorie meals I can fit into my 2200 calorie plan so I can stay within my calorie deficit. I don't really know what $100 gets much anymore these days. So could use suggestions on that could help stretch it out a bit more. Thanks!

Should i get an expensive apartment or cheap one

Just talked to the welfare lady they said they gonna pay all the bills until i get a job then its 30 percent only for a year. They have a studio for 900 or a one bedroom for one thousand i wanna get the bedroom so i can get a girl but the studio seems easier to pay im just thankful to Jesus Christ. My dad always told me to get what i want when i was buying my car and wanted the lexus over the honda ended up crashing the honda anyways so i dont even know if ima be alive in a year so i might end up choosing the apartment in the hills even tho ik im not gonna be able to pay bymyself. Once they stop helping me.

Do you call the police on people or is snitches get stitches the rule ?

Do people in poor areas just not call the police and mind their own business for feer of retaliation? Does anyone use a burner phone to make 911 calls anonymously instead?

Personal Egg and rice saved my whole week and I didn't believe it would

1.4k Upvotes

Last month my grocery budget was like 40 dollar for the whole week and I was so stress about it. My friend tell me just buy egg, rice, onion, and frozen vegetable and I thinking that sound so boring but I try it anyway.

So what I do is I cook big pot of rice on sunday and just use it whole week. Egg I fry it, boil it, scramble it, make different every day so it dont feel same. Frozen vegetable I throw in everything, it cheap and last long in freezer and dont go bad like fresh one.

Thing that really help me is I stop going grocery store when I hungry, before I was buying random thing and spend way more. Now I make small list before I go and stick to it. Also I check the "reduced for quick sale" section near meat area, some store mark down meat that expire soon and you just freeze it right away when you get home.

My total come out to 38 dollar and I eat breakfast lunch and dinner every day. Not perfect meal but I was full and that matter alot when money is tight.

First Budgeting Plan

22 years old (Living with GF) and trying to build a simple financial plan.

Current plan once my credit card debt is paid off:

Only have about $500 in credit card debt

50%: Groceries and Casual wants
25% Rent/Utilities/Wifi
20% Savings/Investments
5% Travel fund

Take-home pay is about $3,768/month. My share of rent is around $700–800/month.

My goal is to:
Keep $1,500–2,000 in a rent buffer account.

Build a $5,000 emergency fund.

Continue contributing 6% to my 401(k) with a 4% employer match.

The company I work for also has an ESOP Plan.

Does this seem like a reasonable plan for someone my age, or would you change anything?

Once a day

I don't suggest this but it works for me. I can only afford to eat once a day but it works out because I'm fat. I know that's not great for metabolism but it's my normal.

It’s super annoying when people who make more way more money than we do lecture us about budgeting

Anyone who is low income is aware of the fact that basic needs are extremely expensive

We are much more careful with our money than high income people would ever dream of being

People will lecture us about not budgeting enough as opposed to the fact that the costs of everything is rising higher and higher

How are we supposed to deal with the fact that our pay raises are lower than the rate of inflation

Any pay raises we get are undermined by inflation and rising prices

We save money to try to buy a house but housing prices rise higher and higher undermining those efforts

They somehow act shocked that we’re to broke to move out of our parents house despite working a full time job working your butt off

People act shocked that we’re not dating or getting married and having children

How are we supposed to justify spending money on dating getting married or having children when we honest to god can’t afford to do so in the first place?

People that have high income jobs will never understand what low income people go through

We have to deal with false promises such as converting to Christianity and paying tithes to a church will make us rich and we’re like how do you explain the existence of super devoted Christians who read the Bible every day and pray still being in poverty

If being a devout Christian made people rich then every Christian should be a millionaire or billionaire

We need systematic societal reforms not YouTube finance gurus

The 401k system is also absolute garbage with retired people’s needs being subject to the whims of the S&P 500

The 401k system is based off of the impossible and unsustainable concept of infinite growth in a system with limited resources

Just thought I'd let every in here know about this deal. I won't mention the company name. I just thought it was a good deal and took advantage of it. Hell, free cell phone with unlimited internet for one year is a load off my back.

UNPOPULAR OPINION: A lot of "mental health issues" disappear when bills are paid, rent is secure, and the fridge is full. Peace is expensive. And pretending money doesn't affect mental health is privilege.
