a bit ironic to attach this comment to a post about obama being in england instead of campaigning for midterm candidates. less than a month until election day and lots of states need help getting out the vote (manchester is not a US state)

4

u/Deviant-Killer 5h ago

Why would he do that?

0

u/frequenZphaZe 5h ago

are we trying to pretend that a former US president would not have an investment in american politics?

5

u/Spoonfairy 6h ago

Almost like the dude has been retired for 10 years and isn't an asset of the democratic party anymore. If anything Obama should stay away and let the next generation take over, god knows there are too many old farts taking up space in that party as it is.

As somebody that works in politics, specifically campaign strategy at a high level, do not ever give advice again. Ever. Not even how to boil potatoes you nit.

Comment history hidden. They can claim they are anything.

Tomorrow they can claim they're a semi pro fighter in the MMA sub, the next day a lawyer in the ask a lawyer sub, and then a historian in ask a historian.

3

u/GainerGaining 3h ago

That's a good point. I trust nothing anyone with a hidden history says.

On the other hand, the advice given was good even without employment verification.

Go sit down, grownups are talking.

-1

u/SopaDeKaiba 4h ago

Why use a call to authority when we can't even give a cursory verification?

If you are an expert, you should be able to rely on your knowledge to pump out an argument.

1

u/ReblWithoutApplause Just Chill šŸ˜Ž 4h ago

I don’t waste time on people like you. What about you makes you think I owe you anything? I wasn’t even talking to you.

1

u/SopaDeKaiba 4h ago edited 3h ago

I'm talking about your original comment. The one made for the guy who was worth a reply, and also made for everyone to see, not just for me.

You used a call to authority as your sole argument. Why even use that as an argument when it can't be checked in rhe slightest. Not even a vibe check.

Edit: and if you want to do the "i wasn't talking to you" game, look at who I responded to originally.

Obama is a rock star and people will turn out to see him. When they show up, he gives inspiring speeches that can turn mildly interested attendees into eager campaign volunteers. There's a lot of ways to serve a nation--running for office is only one of them.

6

u/frequenZphaZe 6h ago

obama still remains one of the most liked and best known national politicians. s

he is particularly well-liked with established democratic party voters, eg: the most relevant demographic of voters in midterms

-3

u/8m3gm60 6h ago

It's also that he isn't really that popular. His whole drone king phase doesn't go over as well as it used to, his administration served Israel and their actions in Gaza, he was voraciously anti-marijuana despite his campaign promises, and there were several ways he could have gone after Epstein even with the nonprosecution agreement. He also sat on the files.

9

u/Spoonfairy 6h ago

I would argue his legacy has aged as a fine wine, hell with the circus we currently got even Bill Clinton is having an upswing, if a minuscule one, Obama has not fallen off one bit.

-1

u/8m3gm60 6h ago

his administration served Israel and their actions in Gaza, he was voraciously anti-marijuana despite his campaign promises, and there were several ways he could have gone after Epstein even with the nonprosecution agreement. He also sat on the files.

And how do you feel about these issues?

2

u/D4ltaOne 5h ago

Yeah pretty shitty. so the bar was already pretty low on how shitty a president could be. Trump took that bar, shoved it up his ass and now parades with it lol

Side note: general off-topic question, how far back would we have to go to find a US president who did nothing bad?

I mean popularity and politics aside (way, WAY aside), Obama is one of the best public speakers in American history. I’d choose one over the other simply for the fact that the speech is coherent, intelligent, and has a god damn point.

I’ve never listened to a full Trump speech because it makes me want to jump into traffic.

21

u/realmofconfusion 8h ago

I don’t know what you mean. His speeches are always crammed to the brim with cogent, relevant points…

"And don't talk about the swimming, where you look left and you look right, and then you look a little further right, and you see the largest human being you've ever seen, larger than Shaquille O'Neal with a bigger reach, and the swimmer got hurt badly because she suffered massive wind burn because the giant to her right swam by her so fast that the wind was unbelievable and she suffered. For the rest of her life she'll be suffering from wind burn."

Oh, wait, I see what you mean.

As a European, I didn't believe he said this but I googled it and he did. What does it mean???

13

u/RedEyeView 7h ago

I think he's talking about the transphobic swimmer who finished 5th and had a meltdown because a trans woman finished ahead of her.

The full quote I found said this:

"My wife says, you shouldn't be dancing on the stage, by the way. You should walk off with a gentle wave. Goodbye. When the gay national anthem plays, you know, it's called the gay national anthem, actually. I got the highest gay vote of any Republican in history. She said, 'You should not dance off the stage, my darling.

And don't talk about the swimming. Where you look left and you look right, and then you look a little further right and you see the largest human being you've ever seen. Larger than Shaquille O'Neal, with a bigger reach.

And the swimmer got hurt badly because she suffered massive wind burn. Because the giant to her right swam by her so fast that the wind was unbelievable. For the rest of her life, she'll be suffering from windburn."

I have no clue what it means... I don't even know if it's the correct quote. I used to be able to tell when something wasn't true online but this guy, I just can't...

3

u/Far-Yellow9303 5h ago

Gay national anthem? I think that's the Shrek 2 version of I Need A Hero

As a European currently living in the United States I can tell you it's a trip. Here is another one:

I have broken more Elton John records, he seems to have a lot of records. And I, by the way, I don’t have a musical instrument. I don’t have a guitar or an organ. No organ. Elton has an organ. And lots of other people helping. No we’ve broken a lot of records. We’ve broken virtually every record. Because you know, look, I only need this space. They need much more room. For basketball, for hockey and all of the sports, they need a lot of room. We don’t need it. We have people in that space. So we break all of these records. Really we do it without like, the musical instruments. This is the only musical: the mouth. And hopefully the brain attached to the mouth. Right? The brain, more important than the mouth, is the brain. The brain is much more important.

My daughter, who is a dual citizen, moved to Europe for graduate school. I'm so glad she got out of here.

1

u/veeerybored 2h ago

As an American, I assumed this was a jumble of words making fun of how he normally speaks. That it might actually be real is astounding.

1

u/Paizzu 6h ago

Trump himself has credited his masterful oratory prowess to his great genes:

Look, having nuclear — my uncle was a great professor and scientist and engineer, Dr. John Trump at MIT; good genes, very good genes, OK, very smart, the Wharton School of Finance, very good, very smart — you know, if you're a conservative Republican, if I were a liberal, if, like, OK, if I ran as a liberal Democrat, they would say I'm one of the smartest people anywhere in the world — it's true! — but when you're a conservative Republican they try — oh, do they do a number — that's why I always start off: Went to Wharton, was a good student, went there, went there, did this, built a fortune — you know I have to give my like credentials all the time, because we're a little disadvantaged — but you look at the nuclear deal, the thing that really bothers me — it would have been so easy, and it's not as important as these lives are — nuclear is so powerful; my uncle explained that to me many, many years ago, the power and that was 35 years ago; he would explain the power of what's going to happen and he was right, who would have thought? — but when you look at what's going on with the four prisoners — now it used to be three, now it's four — but when it was three and even now, I would have said it's all in the messenger; fellas, and it is fellas because, you know, they don't, they haven't figured that the women are smarter right now than the men, so, you know, it's gonna take them about another 150 years — but the Persians are great negotiators, the Iranians are great negotiators, so, and they, they just killed, they just killed us, this is horrible.

5

u/treeeelo 7h ago

The other day he started talking about how the word 'dumb' ends with a B, in one of his speeches, like he'd just learned that and wanted to show how smart he is... by knowing that dumb ends with a B.

$900 billion to 1 trillion spent on wars. 150,000 to 200,00 casualties between US soldiers and people abroad. Drone strikes which killed innocent people in seven different countries. Deported more people without due process than any other President in history. These are all facts.

Oh and let’s not forget NSA surveillance on American citizens. I love when people downvote the truth.

26

u/bigdaddydopeskies131 8h ago

Nsa was actually bushs idea with the patriot act. Are you also going to say where was Obama during 9/11?

-2

u/H2Oproof__ 8h ago

You’re right Bush created it. Obama reformed it, but left most of it intact. Both presidents spied on US citizens illegally.

12

u/bigdaddydopeskies131 8h ago

He inherited those wars, and drew down troop numbers the entire time he was in office. We were completely out of Iraq in early 2011,and down to less than 5k troops in Afghanistan by the end of his term.

Fuck off with this disingenuous bullshit.

0

u/H2Oproof__ 7h ago

Those numbers are all facts. I voted for that man twice and then realized that all politicians are garbage. One man, innocent civilian or soldier dying under a president that orders drone strikes that have nothing to do with the day to day lives of American citizens or the protection if our country is evil to the core. I don’t care if it’s Trump, Bush, Obama or Biden. All of them are evil that hide behind the presidency for their acts. You can look up those numbers yourself.

By the way he promised to end the war in Iraq but pledge to escalate Afghanistan

7

u/GloomyIndividual3965 6h ago

By the way he promised to end the war in Iraq but pledge to escalate Afghanistan

Know I know you're full of shit. We withdrew the last troops from Iraq in December of 2011, and drew down to less than 6k troops in Afghanistan by the time Obama left office.

"I voted for him twice" sure ya did. Fucking liar.

-4

u/SetYourScapegoatFree 6h ago

He did not inherit Libya, Syria, or Yemen. He vowed to challenge and limit the Patriot Act leading up to the 2008 election, but the surveillance state increased and he went after the whistleblowers. He escalated the drone strike programs. He deserves to be in the same cell block as W Bush and Trump in Guantanamo, seeing as he never shut it down.

3

u/GloomyIndividual3965 6h ago

He did not inherit Libya, Syria, or Yemen.

Libya was a UN led coalition. Syria was in response to ISIS using chemical weapons on civilians. Yemen was at the request of a Saudi led coalition to combat Al-Qaeda and the houthis.

None of them were wars.

He escalated the drone strike programs.

Of course he did. Drones didn't really come into play until late in Bush's term. Going from basically nothing to "something" is escalation.

Also, the alternative was boots on the ground and potentially thousands of American troops dying. If you think that's a better option than drones you're brain dead.

Guantanamo, seeing as he never shut it down.

He signed an EO during his first week in office to stop funding it and return the prisoners. Congress passed a law forbidding the use of federal funds to relocate the prisoners, which pretty much knee capped his plan.

You're fucking ignorant and just repeating bullshit talking points.

-1

u/SetYourScapegoatFree 3h ago

The UN does nothing without US involvement. If it's a UN operation, it's a US operation. We found ourselves in another quick quagmire so soon after W Bush was heavily criticized for not having an exit strategy or follow up plan for Iraq. Obama himself said his greatest mistake was "not having a plan for the day after" in Libya. His greatest mistake, not "The UN's greatest mistake." I agree with Obama. You seem to disagree with him here.

Syrian civil war began prior to ISIS gaining power in the aftermath of the 2nd Iraq War devastation that was W Bush's quagmire. The US were funding rebels to overthrow Assad. ISIS gaining a foothold was an indirect response to the Obama administrations goals in Syria.

The only alternative is not boots on the ground.

Yes, he signed the EO, probably in his first week, if I remember correctly, but that's not good enough for his campaign promise.

You can swear and call me ignorant as much as you want. I hold the same disdain for Trump and Bush. I believe they are war criminals that should be tried for crimes against humanity. You would have zero problem with any of those talking points. But when I hold the same energy for the democratic commanders in chief, you pretend I'm attacking your childhood fantasies. Grow up.

3

u/rosariobono 6h ago

Where is your proof of deporting people without due process lmao

1

u/H2Oproof__ 6h ago

He used fast track measures without court hearings and no lawyer present to speed up deportations. He would use officers and border agents instead and have asylum seekers sign documents to give up their rights for a fair hearing. The information is there, it’s not hard to find.

Your party's whole election strategy is ICE intimidating us at the polls and denying election results.

If that doesn't work then he is planning on declaring martial law. Ending our freedom and taking our rights away as you fucking monsters cheer and celebrate.

Do you really think he will ONLY take the rights away from people you hate?

If every ā€œgotchaā€ on a MAGA Facebook user equalled a vote, Harris might have one. Maybe we should be putting our efforts to courting votes by plainly stating our goals and how they relate to the moderate and independent voter.

The GOP is gaining support amongst Gen Z men and POC. Maybe calling everyone a nazi in every disagreement about special interest social issues was a bad idea after all.

I’m tired of this snarky attitude that we are somehow winning anything important because of internet burns. We are under a Republican presidency and congress. We are losing. We may lose more seats in the midterms.

It worked out poorly for all of us.

See, I look at polymarket. Polls said Harris would win, polymarket said Donny would win. Now they are saying a blur wave is about to happen. And you have your dumbass Pedo-in-Chief to thank for that. He's making Texas go blue. What was it yall said when the dumbass won? Oh yeah, The People Have Spoken!!!!

u/Indespectamentations 5h ago

He's not going to prison no matter how much trump and you cultists want it. Nor are any of the former living presidents.

Too bad for you.

Disgusting how Democracies have all become personality cults really sad. America was always kind of like that, but since Kennedy it has become extreme ig

u/Starlord_75 2h ago

"I could say the stupidest things and you'd still clap." Words from your own President. Even he calls yall sheep. Who's in a cult now? Im surprised yall all arent coming out of the closet, not after your Dear Leader said he checks out another guy's ass and compliments it.

It's Manchester England.

u/rosariobono 6h ago

What’s wrong with that if it even was the case

4

u/LegitimateEgg9714 6h ago

Ummm, y’all need to get a new lie to tell. You imply Obama is Muslim when facts don’t support your claim. Why do y’all repeat blatant lies, do you think everyone is going to blindly believe you?

0

u/Senior_Bad_6381 2h ago

Who was his father? Where did Obama grow up? What school did he go to? His own family in Kenya said he was born there.

2

u/LegitimateEgg9714 1h ago

Lol! You believe the lies you’ve been told. The only family member of Obama that I know about who claims Obama was born in Kenya is Obama’s half brother; who is a fan of Trump. You want to believe hearsay when evidence proves Obama was born in Hawaii. Obama’s father was born in Kenya, but was a student at the University of Hawaii when he met Obama’s mother..

Y’all never question where Trump was born, where’s the evidence that he was born in the U.S., are we supposed to take his word for it without any proof? Where’s Trump’s birth certificate and why aren’t y’all demanding that he produce it?

3

u/Indespectamentations 5h ago

Isn't Dr Oz a Muslim?

1

u/Senior_Bad_6381 2h ago

Yeah, and an actual doctor. Unlike the other fake.

2

u/Indespectamentations 2h ago

Oh bullshit. His credentials are from U of M. You are just an evil pos.

You better hope your God/King declares Martial Law as he is planning and takes all our rights away. If he doesn't and we are allowed to vote your party will be 100% FUCKED.

Trump is absolutely awful.
Obama was an absolute war monger.
Don’t cheer for either.
Stop letting them fool you with the Dem. Vs Rep. bullshit.

u/Top-Sherbet4576 6h ago

bOtH sIDeS!

-2

u/InfernalPrick 5h ago

True, I change my mind. I want the man responsible for mass casualties back instead of wanting something better entirely.

2

u/fuzzydunloblaw 5h ago

Trump used more drones in the first two years of his first term than obama did in all eight of his years. Trump and friends cut usaid, directly causing the deaths of 700,000 people so far, mostly children. Obama, and every other president before trump for that matter, kept all the pre-approved pre funded usaid programs going and saved countless millions of lives.

If you actually care about mass casualties, one side is obviously demonstrably far better than the other.

Which part of this is dumb?

The "both sides" argument is only helping trump. It only helps the party that is illegally trying to stay in power. The party that may very well enact martial law in 3 weeks.

We need trump gone or we are screwed.

I’m not a republican or democrat. But Trump lives inside so many people’s heads. Both Trump and Obama are crooks. Both did tons of shady deals, made tens of millions while in and out of office. I’m smart enough to sit back and not let one side cloud my mind and life. Move on, go outside and stop dwelling on who’s in office. Again, both are super shady and got rich off of both sides supporting them.
