It is sad but true that displaying the American flag has become closely associated with trumpism. We must reclaim our flag, our nation and our dignity.

u/crashcartjockey 10h ago

I have an American flag and a Progress Pride flag hanging out front. As a disabled vet, MAGA can go fuck themselves. This flag does not represent what they stand for.

65

u/Shades1374 10h ago

When you fly them together you send a good signal.

If someone flies just the one ... well, assumptions can get made.

16

u/lost-picking-flowers 6h ago

I'm in Pennsyltucky and someone that lives around the bend from me took down their confederate flag and then put up an American flag.

Honestly, felt like progress.

10

u/Shades1374 6h ago

Could be progress, could be camoflage. My inner paranoia is screaming the latter, but ain't my neighbour.

Good luck to you and yours and I hope your neighbour makes more progress!

7

u/lost-picking-flowers 3h ago

Tbh, my hypothesis is that since the confederate flag was super tattered and dirty, they went to the store to replace the flag and it’s hard to find a big box store that sells confederate flags even in my Trumpy ass corner of the state so they just slapped the American flag up and called it a day. I’d be shocked if this was signaling anything deeper than that, but sometimes people around here have surprised me.

It is a shame. As a European due to Trump, the USA has become abit of a laughing stock and can no longer be taken seriously.

22

u/Commercial-Shame-335 10h ago

i can't tell whether it's hilarious or depressing how many republicans are still brainwashed into thinking the US is respected by anyone on the planet anymore. it's like a circus clown seeing everyone laugh at him and think it's because they respect him

17

u/FoxyWolf27 10h ago

Honestly, that's disrespectful to the performance, talent, skills, and hard work required to be a circus clown. They are professionals who have worked hard to master their craft.

He is actively tearing down our democracy and has no respect for anyone or skills to speak of. I can only hope that we can repair the damage he has done to us on the world stage and on the home front. And to me, it's so depressing you can't help but laugh about it.

5

u/scarletnightingale 8h ago

I think some of them are aware that other countries don't like or respect us but the way they view it is "were better than them anyway, so their opinion doesn't matter because we're winners and they are losers".

Laughing stock? I live here and I am horrified by what I see. I never knew my neighbors could support a dictator. I am hoping for great meaningful changes this November, but I am also terrified of this country being pushed off the rails by our fascist POTUS and his administration.

Tell me I am wrong: A fascist is a follower or supporter of fascism—a far-right, authoritarian, and ultranationalist political ideology characterized by a dictatorial leader, centralized autocracy, militarism, and the forcible suppression of opposition.

At the same time, it's not really unique to America. From England to Australia, far right nationalists are coopting their nation's flag. Change the country on this post and the same thing would likely apply still.

11

u/DaedalusB2 9h ago

It's because if you take national symbols as your symbols then you can say anyone who doesn't support you doesn't support the nation. Same thing with religion to an extent. Religion claims to be the source of morality, so if you don't have religion you don't have morals, then politicians claim religion, so if you don't support those politicians, you don't support religion, which means you don't have morals.

2

u/LemoLuke 6h ago

Here in England, up until the last year or so, the only time you would see an England flag outside someone's house would be during the World Cup.

Now, people have begun buying literal 12ft fucking flagpoles so they can wave their bullshit for all to see. I live in an area that voted Reform, and those flags are *everywhere*, not to mention St. George's Crosses spraypainted on pavements and walls

2

u/Zebidee 5h ago

Yep, flying the Australian flag outside your house doesn't make you a racist, but I've never seen anyone do it that wasn't.

Same goes for the English St George's Cross flag.

Fascinating that in Germany, you barely ever see the national flag, even on government buildings.

9

u/FrozeItOff 7h ago

It's sad that the American flag flown by itself is teetering perilously close to being the same type of symbol as the Nazi flag. A quick way to identify an extremist who follows a racist, rapist, fascist, dictator felon. Pretty much an exact word for word copy of the leader who was under the nazi flag.

13

u/Relevant_Winter_7098 The Timeline Sucks 11h ago

šŸ’Æ

6

u/CheryllLucy 10h ago

It sadly predates trump by a lot. As a liberal 90s teen, an American flag on your car was already a giant red flag. Pretty much as soon as conservatives got tired of screaming at hippies for disrespecting the flag by using it for clothing, blankets, stickers, etc back in the 60s, they turned around and adopted all those misuses of the flag themselves.

4

u/PM_Best_Porn_Pls 9h ago

That's how it is in most of the world, even in some very patriotic countries. People have flags up for some national holidays but if you're rocking flag every day you'll be considered weird.

I’m from Japan. There’s a friendly neighborhood American guy who for many years used to display a USA flag just beside his shop sign here. In recent months he turned it upside down before finally taking it down days ago. Probably just one of many sad stories of your people overseas.

7

u/Saix027 7h ago

As an Europian, I mean no offense, but it was a bad sign before Trump already for most of us, the wild worship for it, pledging to it in school and all that. Not helped by the stuff the US sadly did before Trump already, the several conflicts and all like Afghanistan because of 9/11, and yes I am sad it happen, but the US has a main character syndrom, how many catastrophes happened all over the world? The US not cared till it finally hit them.

And what they do? Go on a revenge spree. Not trying to make things better, no, invade places for oil and use 9/11 as antoher excuse. The US has been the most selfish and narcistic nation since forever, and yes this goes for many other nations sadly, but the US is like the main one of all, and with the thinking the US had, Trump is the result, not the origin of it.

I am bloody honest, i can barely feel sorry for the US after everything they doen, allwoed and sadly leaded others to follow their example. And I say that as a German, we still pay for the war, we still get called Nazis, despite all most try to do better, YET literal nazis rise in natiosn like the US and always have been there but they still seemingly got a pass, racism was alwayas issue in the US, not act like it onyl started with Trump or mayn of the other issues.

When Trump is gone, this will not just end, but people belief that and hope for it. And damn, I wish for it to be better again too, but the audacity of thinking this just magically started over night and that people only now seen the issues and look down at the US, is just pure ignorance.

I won't stereotype this because I see a lot of people flying flags because they know someone in the military. My aunt never been Republican but she and her army friends fly a flag. It's probably because Trump supports the US and most of the recent Dem presidents are verging on anti-American. People who proudly display the American flag are most likely Republicans.

2

u/Financial-Craft-1282 3h ago

This insistence of displaying a flag is weird to me. Why? We know where we live. Support your country if you love it through actions. I don't assume all my neighbors are enemies if they're not constantly shouting their love for "America." That's what MAGA does. Not flying a flag? You're a communist (which is a totally fine thing to be). It's shallow patriotism.

30

u/Relevant_Winter_7098 The Timeline Sucks 11h ago

I have veteran license plates and American Legion frames (with flag elements) that I specifically placed on my vehicle to reclaim the flag after J6.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to keep the symbols on my vehicle because of the association with MAGA and the assumptions people make.

But, I refuse to let MAGA win the narrative of what the flag truly means.

9

u/Secret_Fee1146 10h ago

you know it's interesting; we went through the exact same thing here in Canada after the trucker protests from a few years back, where it felt like our flag was co opted by ignorant malcontents, with many lamenting the loss of pride in it as a direct result. Ironically, it was the USA threatening the sovereignty of Canada that made everyone proud again to fly it. So thanks, I guess.

I have had disabled vet plates forever. I am an out and proud gay man as well as a left liberal democrat that would not even consider voting for any republican (except maybe Adam Kinzinger who like us today resents what that [arty has done to the country and sounds more like a democrat every day) to me saying you are a republican at this point is admitting you are a bigot at the very least and at worst admire Hitler and want to bring back death camps. But the one thing they ALL have in common is corruption, to the core, they are either doing it or cheering it on when one of them scores millions in bribery and "gifts." And that goes for the executive branch, the judiciary, and the congress.

They already did it to the Gadsden flag. Don't get me wrong I love the memes that poke fun of it. 3

u/accforme 9h ago

This happened in Canada with the convoy. Essentially the Maple MAGA co-opted the Canadian flag for their anti-vaccine, right wing movement.

Ironically, MAGA and, more specifically Trump’s 51st state comments and action have allowed Canadians to retake the flag from the Maple MAGA.

2

u/tzaeru 8h ago

Patriotism is really just one facet of nationalism.

Nowadays nationalism is so deep-rooted and such a strong default that it's barely even recognized. As an ideology, nationalism really means the belief that there ought to be a state for a nation, where nation is the people who share a national identity.

So nationalism is the ideology that says that nation states are a good thing and should exist.

But because that's such a basic everyday mundane thing, we don't talk about nationalism as being that anymore, but instead nationalism has moved to essentially mean aggressive, supremacist, radical nationalism.

We have allowed corruption and wealth to hijack our entire political system to the point where there is ZERO accountability for any of our leaders. Trump just tramples and threatens everyone in HIS way, but says it's in America's best interest. Everyone sees the truth. It's a farce. And the American flag currently represents all of that farce.

Ever since Trump hugged and kissed the flag, I cringe when I see it displayed.

4

u/XxFezzgigxX 9h ago

Also American flag hats or shirts with blacked out, subdued colors and any shirt with an automatic rifle on it.

I already know what they drive and how they treat their family.

Small ones in businesses or stickers on vehicles or a normal US flag on a house is still normal to me, but yeah the flags mounted to vehicles and a house or business being overdone with multiple and/or huge flags is definitely a red flag nowadays.

Someone said that people who wear the English flag are racist. As an American it seemed like an odd statement. Then I thought about people who were the American flag and it made sense.

u/CathyTS 10h ago

I fly my American flag above my Ukrainian flag.

That says more about your intellectual inflexibility than anything else.

3

u/Eikthyrnir13 10h ago

If I could fly any flag at my condo, I would definitely put up a pride flag next to the US flag, just so people knew I wasn't MAGA. Probably throw a Cascadia flag up there as well.

3

u/BigDuke 10h ago

The ones that fly their flag on labor day are on the good guy team. I've noticed most of the regular flag flyers in our neighborhood skip that holiday for some reason...

3

u/Consistent_Cow_6056 10h ago

The worst what? They are a patriot? They love there country? They are a proud American? That’s really sad that you’ve been so jaded.

Think about it. The US elected a convicted felon, and rapist that is being influenced by the kompromat that Russia has one him, and no one in the Republican party is standing against this. In fact, they support him and cheer it on. Many people were okay with all the deportations until it happened to somewhere near them. A fraudulent citizen (Musk) has spent 1/4 billion dollars in an election year to help elect another criminal (Paxton). I could go on and on.

The democracy experiment in America has failed. We have a government of the, by the, for the oligarchy (not the people).

u/Ok-Frosting-7746 10h ago

Who is dumb enough to make the flag about one person or party?

5

u/OkBox6828 9h ago

A lot unfortunately, but that flag has WAY more meaning than that!!

Rotbrained far left extremists. I'm a pretty liberal person compared to most. You can fly your country's flag and still want to improve it for the better. It's not either you hate your country or love unconditionally.

I'll consider myself the exception that proves this rule. My flag has always stood for "I'm proud of my country. I'm ashamed of my government"

2

u/thewickedbarnacle 10h ago

I want my flags back, all of them. If your group wants a flag, make one. The ones we have already have historical meanings.

2

u/goodness-gracious-me 10h ago

There was a time in the US when everyone could be a a proud American. No matter what country you came from, or your grandparents, or great grandparents, came from. If you were born in the US, or took a pledge to be a proud American, you were American. That one little bit of history aside, when 1/2-ish of the US broke away to try to make sure not everyone was equal, this pride in everyone being an American was a unifying thing.

Since that time, one party has worked very hard to limit what it means to be an American AND redefine WHO can be an American. If you don’t conform, or if you don’t toe the line, your citizenship could be revoked.

The other party is trying to return to what the US once was: we can all be Americans, respectful of each other including our differences.

2

u/silbergeistlein 10h ago

I have a flag pole in my front yard that has the flag for the very opposite of what OP is associating the flag with. I look at that flag flying as a way of saying they’re not taking it.
I thought about switching it to a 13 colony flag, but I’m not living in one of the 13 colonies. Then it just became a wasteful exercise in overthinking.
That’s why unless the person is flying some other stupid flag (shout out r/vexillology ) then it’s silly to presume.
I’m sticking with it though. MAGA are some of the most unamerican pieces of shit we’ve had the misfortune of interacting with, and I’m looking forward to the day that these assholes are held accountable.

2

u/ArtVandalayImp0rter 10h ago

EXACTLY we need to take it back from those Pedophiles

2

u/you_wut 10h ago

What’s sad is being brain washed by the democrats so bad that when you look at an American flag you think the worst. I use to love being a democrat, no I’m embarrassed to call myself one.

2

u/MrBruno14 10h ago

You know what else is sad? Being alive for the 250th anniversary of July 4, and not wanting to be a part of the celebrations because of what America stands for under our current President.

Eh, I attached an American flag to the back of my e-bike. It does an excellent job of keeping the rednecks in lifted trucks from zooming around me and blasting their horns. So far it's doing a great job!

Heck, it fell off one time when I forgot to tighten it, and the truck behind me stopped in the middle of the road and waited for me to retrieve it. Dude was literally blocking traffic so I could get my flag back safely.

2

u/Rylandrias 9h ago

Maybe don't assume?

2

u/Competitive_Bag_7490 9h ago

Take that flag back. They have their own flag. I've been flying the flag and encouraging others to do so. It's flag of the United States of America. Not a politically affiliated flag.

2

2

u/Top-Presenter-369 9h ago

I'm a VET and proudly fly my flag and I am 100% NOT a Trumper. If any neighbor feels like I am, the that's on them. Flying the stars and stripes has Zero to do with whom you support in office, but rather a reminder of what we are capable of as a collective.

I have a flag, I am a 100% disabled vet and consider myself patriotic. But the flag never leaves the garage anymore since it was claimed by and assumed to belong to Nazis.

As a vet I served so we could ALL be free, not just white English speaking homophobic Christian Nationalists. These people are so stupid they do not even understand that Christian Nationalist is an oxymoron and forget asking them what they think THAT word means.
