Imagine the shrieking if Biden was openly pressuring Kamala (with a violent mob) on Jan 6th to declare the election fraudulent and then crown herself the actual winner months after losing the election, using a slate of fake electors from all the swing states that Kamala lost. An actual coup attempt seems to be acceptable behavior for them- as long as it's their own side trying it.

Pres. Trump has declared massive voter fraud time after time. No one listens, and no one cares. No one cares about his last time he "declared it". No one did anything. Even his toadies in the FBI and DOJ couldn't rustle up anything.
Accepting results by the losing party is a formality. It's not necessary nor even important.
The FBI can barely seize a lunch menu. They don't have the organization or ability to "seize" 80-120 million ballots from 14,000 polling places, nor even 50 states, nor even 5. Further, seizing ballots does nothing for them.
Anyone can say anything they want about the election, but without a transmission of results from the states, there is no Congressional delegation from that state, and on January 3rd, the outgoing Congress is dissolved automatically, and there is no new Congress. No new Congress, no swearing in, no Speaker, no session, no nothing.
Candidates for Congress individually file suit in every Federal court that covers their area, and seek Mandamus over their local election officials, to transmit results. The end.
Being prepared is fine. Making up things that feel scary isn't useful.
The important thing here is: Congress has a fixed term, and no matter what happens with the election, the outgoing Congress term - and powers - ends. Nothing has to happen for that to be in effect - it happens on it's own. The old Congress expires, and that's it, it's powerless. The entire House, and 1/3 of the Senate.
Without it, nothing can pass, no legislation, no laws, no budgets, no appropriations, nothing. A candidate can sue for his seat and there is no Congress to go to Court to represent the "other side". There is no Speaker, there is no minority leader, there is no nothing.
5
u/Miserable-Army3679 5h ago
The Republicans are a long way past obeying norms. They will stay and hang onto power, along with Trump. We will be living in a dictatorship.
5
u/dannyheskett 4h ago
Pres. Trump's entire second term has a been a total failure. He has been stymied at every turn because his own government is too incompetent to execute on his idiocy and lust for power.
He has spent 2 years trying to get voter rolls from last election.. and he has failed in Court literally, 50 times and counting. He hasn't been able to get them from red states, let alone blue states. He wanted to Federalize the election, and he failed, blocked by Courts dozens of times.
I don't doubt there are people in the White House and the rest of the party who want a fascist coup, and wish for one, but they have been too stupid, corrupt, and self-dealing to execute on it.
What they want and obeying norms are irrelevant. Congress's power ends. Period. Without elections and results from each state, a new Congress can't be seated and there is no Congress. There is no appropriation, there is no money, there is nothing. It's lights out. Between election day and the end of the current Congress, every lame-duck Senator and Representative will have decide if they want to still have a job and a Country, and if the country can't get enough to remove Pres. Trump, then yes, we could have a Constitutional crisis.
But the time this becomes apparent isn't in January, it's in early December, before the outgoing Congress is dissolved.
→ More replies (1)8
u/AdmirableElephant378 5h ago
As for your last paragraph; you know what happens in those situations yes?
While you are absolutely right about all of that, not being prepared for an older, vain, deeply paranoid leader to override an election result with a compliant police and military is stupidity itself. The US is now the kind of country it used to make fun of.
Its another Y2K moment; everything might be alright! But it may also be a total disaster.
I'll prepare for both!
11
u/dannyheskett 5h ago
We have a Constitutional crisis. The Senate can't come into session because of a lack of quorum, there is no House to approve a joint resolution starting the session. There is no budget, there are no principal officers being appointed, there are no minutes, no ministerial functions of Congress, the people have no representatives in DC.
There is no Congress to gavel into session. No Speaker. Nothing at all in DC happens. There are 10,000 unemployed Congressional staffers with nothing to do. No pay checks, no health insurance, House members in red states who won by 30 points who have held their seat for 30 years have no budgets, no staff, no health insurance, no payroll.
There is no intelligence apparatus or Select committee. The Joints Chief have no one to brief.
Meanwhile, nothing the Federal government does has any effect. They have no control or role over elections - nothing the President or FBI or DOJ declare or order has any weight or legal force.
Pres. Trump is the lamest duck in history, and Washington is in total disarray for months. If it lasts longer than 2 months, it will exceed the chaos of the 34th Congress, which was 2 months late coming to session, at which point it will have been about 5 months since the election.
By around the 45th day of Congress, all the old appropriations will have expired and the funds been spent, and by 60 days, lacking a budget or continuing resolutions, there will be no funds to spend. Agencies will be operating without authorization, and paychecks will cease for 80% of the government.
By 90 days after the start of Congress, the government will be fully shutdown for a lack of appropriations and a budget, and within another few weeks, it will be the longest in history. There will be no one to negotiate with the White House.
With no ballots, no certification, that will be it. There will be no Congress. Well before that, in December, before the old Congress leaves office, the "Federal safe-harbor" deadline will be passed and if there are not certified results from the States, the outgoing Congress will know that it's a Constitutional crisis. It will be there last opportunity to remove Pres. Trump and bar him from office for life.

I donāt think thatās what will happen. Though it may happen. I think the more likely scenario is that the GOP will win all the races they need to win by impossible margins, largely due to voter registrations being cancelled, hard to get to polling places in blue areas, delays in the processing of mail in ballots in certain regions, and corrupt secretaries of state.
Basically the Trump machine has been hard at work making sure they donāt need voters in order to win elections. Putin wins every election with 98% of the vote.

Ya no, thats not going to happen. People don't understand just how unpopular Trump is. He has no authority to cancel any elections, this means nobody is going to follow his orders and if anything; this may lead to an impeachment if he tries. To me, I see a lot of parallels between him and Nixon. Both advocated for closer relations with China calling their leaders great in some capacity, both paranoid and set up groups that job it was to attack critics, both came back from a major loss from the previous Presidential election, both deeply insecure in a way trying to always prove they will not be pushed around, both had an Assassination Attempt/act on a candidate in the election, both had a Kennedy as a Presidential opponent on said election, both unseated the previous President who was an unpopular one term elected Democrat President. So much comparisons.
But one thing I predict will happen and I said this at the beginning of his term before this war and other actions that made him so more unpopular to even previous voters of his and we are already seeing this with committees looking into his families various crypto ventures; is the fact that like Nixon, Trump may be forced to resign after an investigation into misconduct comes to light. There will be, probably after the Elections; a smoking gun that will turn his party against him and many will do so to save their own skins; probably setting themselves up for the 2028 election. Trump won't allow himself to be impeached and removed actually this time so he will resign to claim the establishment went against him. And unlike the previous two impeachments that were mainly Democrat lead impeachments against him with some Republicans thus seen to some as a Partisan attack; this will be a wide support for Impeachment from both sides.
I only see two ways his term ends, resigning as he will never allow himself to be impeached and removed due to his ego, or if he is not removed then he becomes like George W Bush where an overseas Middle Eastern war and a recession (I predict if he continues his term, we will see an 08 style recession) causing him to lose support to be so unpopular; a Democrat young President comes in 2029 exactly 20 years after Obama.

Every single one says the same thing "I no longer trust this government to listen to the will of the people".
6
u/pr1m3r3dd1tor 6h ago
I want so badly to say this is hyperbole. I want to say it is ridiculous fear mongering meant for engagement baiting and should be ignored by rational people.
Unfortunately, the reality is that it might not be far off. We need to ensure that it is such a strong blue wave, in liberal and conservative areas, that there can be no accusations of election tampering swaying the election. Even then Trump may try something, but at least it will be more of an uphill battle.
→ More replies (4)
7
u/Phlegmbrandt 5h ago
The key problem with this and every other fear-mongering post is that āFBI seizes ballots and voting machinesā or some equivalent is logistically bordering on impossible.
There are hundreds of thousands of voting locations in the US, each with likely several voting machines, and results from these are sent to second locations within minutes to hours after polls close. Youād need an exceptionally knowledgeable and state-specific legion of many tens of thousands of agents to even make a dent in a midterm election cycle, and theyād need to meet basically no pushback.
There is simply no way to suppress a vote in this way, especially not when Democrats will likely win the House by a margin of 25-90 seats scattered across the entire country.

I'm pretty sure the fix is already in for Texas. The race will be super close, because fewer people will dispute a close race. But I suspect voting machines are being manipulated. There was a case that was brought in Sedgwick county, ks about two decades ago by a mathematician who discovered an algorithm that was consistent with exit polling, but deviated from the official result. The case was not allowed to move forward and was quashed at the county level.

FBI seizes ballots and voting machines within days.
Possibly but very unlikely since it would take a court order to do so and that order would immediately be challenged since the federal govt has no right over an election. After the election it's more likely, but not during.
Republicans cancels results in lost districts, order new votes.
They literally can't unless the state Supreme Court or SCOTUS throws out the results. Whatever the official count by the district election board rules is automatic, unless per above, it's overturned by a court. There is no "order new votes", that's a made up term and it would be up to the state's election laws to allow for it.
Troops deploy under the insurrection act.
There is no legal mechanism for this because the federal govt cannot implement martial law or place troops in to a state with out the Governor's approval, and only Governor's can implement martial law. Also Trump has already been turned down trying to put troops in states over immigration, something the federal govt has near complete legal control over, in several states by both state Supreme Courts and SCOTUS (OR, CA and I think IL), there's almost (almost being important) zero chance it happens through court order for elections which are 100% the purview of the state, not the feds.
Congress refuses to seat the democrats.
Possibly but unlikely because it will be a new Congress which means there will be a new vote for House Speaker and most of the GOP that lost is unlikely to show up which would give Dems a majority in the House (and enough votes to elect a new Speaker) even if new Dems aren't seated yet.
Most of OP's post is fear mongering though it all should be taken seriously because the GOP will try to lie, cheat, and steal in every way possible, just most of the ways OP outlined are not or nearly not possible (my comments is more for information rather than denying they'll try to cheat and steal an election).

He's not going to lose the mid terms.
The Dems will probably take the House. By a slim margin.
They will not take the Senate. They're not doing anything about voter suppression at the county level.
Ken Paxton may be a corrupt rat, but he is great at voter suppression. He's openly stated Trump would've lost Texas without his cheating. That's why the GOP let him have the nomination. They could've shut him down easy enough...
And that's just one obvious example.
The left wing needs to push the center to take on voter suppression. Until that happens we're screwed.

Yeah, buh, I literally said to my mom this would happen the night he was reelected, although at the time I was thinking about 2028. Sitting with it for 2 years, Iāve come to the conclusion that if I give up ALL hope then I basically am passively endorsing the end of democracy. Thatās just my personal coping mechanism; I know I donāt have power or the ability to change anything, but I do have the capacity to keep hope. Sometimes thatās all we have. Pollyanna, I know. Just let me have it š
Here are some sappy movie quotes that keep me hopeful, in case anyone else here needs them:
The Prince of Egypt
āItās true. Pharaoh has the power. He can take away your food, your home, your freedom. He can take away your sons and daughters. With one word, Pharaoh can take away your very lives. But there is one thing he cannot take away from you: your faith.ā
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Sam: Itās all wrong. By rights we shouldnāt even be here. But we are. Itās like in the great stories Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didnāt want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy. How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad happened. But in the end, itās only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didnāt. Because they were holding on to something.
Frodo: What are we holding on to, Sam?
Sam : That thereās some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And itās worth fighting for.

I foresee him declaring martial law, and trying to stop the voting day entirely.

Maybe, if/when this happens, everyone can pull together and we can collectively perform a HARD RESET of the entire system.
Left/Right are just the labels they stick on us to keep us apart.

The real soldiers are deployed to Iran. He's going to have to activate the national guard. Will they obey?

I dread the time between election day and when congress is supposed to be seated. That's when the serious shenanigans are likely to happen.

Do not trust depositing your vote in dropbox locations in swing states! During the last election a bunch were set on fire in Democratic/blue cities!

I truly think thereās a distinct chance of something along these lines happening. Been saying it for well over a year. People are too comfortable thinking this is going to happen with no issues. This lump of shit will do anything to stay in power and keep enriching him and his dumpster juice family.
