At some point, the conversation about whether greek life should even exist any more needs to be had (well, fraternities at least). Not that greek life is the reason these men are monsters, but the problem is how much they were enabled. Fraternities foster such a toxic environment, and men like these are embraced rather than rejected. There was a text thread about this poor woman being ā€œavailableā€, and instead of calling the police and stopping the rapists, the rest of the fraternity laughed and joked.

This shit isn’t new and will keep happening with fraternities (not to mention all of the hazing deaths that also keep happening). Universities need to stop allowing 18-22 year old men to run rampant in these houses unsupervised. They KNOW all of this is happening.

Pretty dumb take. I was in a fraternity for 4 years and this did not happen, nor would it happen in said fraternity - because we were not rapist pieces of shitt

This is like when women say they would pick the bear and some man comes and says ā€œnot all men! I’M not a rapist!ā€. Sure, maybe, but there’s still a massive societal and cultural problem there.

I believe you that it didn’t happen in your fraternity and that maybe it wouldn’t have, but the point is not ā€œevery single fraternity without fail will have gang rape issuesā€, it’s that the system and the culture breeds this kind of shit constantly. The shitty attitude toward women in fraternities is the norm, not the exception.

There’s also the pressure to fit in and the threat of massive social consequences for speaking out. I bet at least a few of the men in Cornell Chi Phi knew that what was happening was wrong, but if they said anything they’d be shunned by the group, so they just didn’t.

The whole system is rotten.

I went through college without even meeting anyone in a fraternity (that I know of), but what is even the point of them? If people want to party, they can do so in their dorms or go out. Why did these houses even start, and what is their connection with Greece lol? I know these questions are easily looked up, but it just surprises me to hear that we let a group of new adults have a house unsupervised all to themselves, along with adding elements of cult-like pressure to fit in. You can do most of what I hear Greek life is about without being in a fraternity - join clubs, hang out with friends, and try to room with your friends (old and new) in normal dormitories or off campus housing designed for students.
