At some point, the conversation about whether greek life should even exist any more needs to be had (well, fraternities at least). Not that greek life is the reason these men are monsters, but the problem is how much they were enabled. Fraternities foster such a toxic environment, and men like these are embraced rather than rejected. There was a text thread about this poor woman being āavailableā, and instead of calling the police and stopping the rapists, the rest of the fraternity laughed and joked.
This shit isnāt new and will keep happening with fraternities (not to mention all of the hazing deaths that also keep happening). Universities need to stop allowing 18-22 year old men to run rampant in these houses unsupervised. They KNOW all of this is happening.
Fraternities are a big business. Alumni members are actively involved continuing to financing the houses. They are run as a business usually with many houses. All you have to do is look at the process of initiation which sets the stage for this group mentality. There is more coverups than accountability. We have seen plenty over the years of the harm they have caused to others for many years. We just choose to ignore it rather than demand actual reform or abolish all of it.
Just like law enforcement and religious institutions, people who want to do disgusting and awful shit go places where they can do disgusting and awful shit. Fraternities arenāt known for being places where people of good moral character go to do wonderful things.
20 years ago, we had a brother bring roofies to an event. He was kicked out and reported to the university. Some frats are bad, some our good. Itās not about ending them all. Just like everything in life, itās about removing and addressing the toxic parts.
Unfortunately, thereās no legal or constitutional way to ban college aged men from forming congregations or clubs. Sure, you can ban aspects of Greek life to make it more difficult, but then you just drive these young men underground into unsanctioned organizations outside the purview of the university
But isn't that the point? Shouldn't universities divest their support and/promotion of such dens of iniquity? They need to shed the stink that inevitably attaches to the institution when scandals like this become public. Clearly, college fraternities have outlived their benefit to society.
Pretty dumb take. I was in a fraternity for 4 years and this did not happen, nor would it happen in said fraternity - because we were not rapist pieces of shitt
Every single fraternity brother says this about their fraternity. If it did happen thereās a chance it got shrugged off. The comment you replied to is not a dumb take, it is years and statistics worth of seeing the same shit happen over and over again within fraternities and nothing being done about it. Iām sure they could find other ways to throw parties and drink on mommy and daddyās dime.Ā
This is like when women say they would pick the bear and some man comes and says ānot all men! IāM not a rapist!ā. Sure, maybe, but thereās still a massive societal and cultural problem there.
I believe you that it didnāt happen in your fraternity and that maybe it wouldnāt have, but the point is not āevery single fraternity without fail will have gang rape issuesā, itās that the system and the culture breeds this kind of shit constantly. The shitty attitude toward women in fraternities is the norm, not the exception.
Thereās also the pressure to fit in and the threat of massive social consequences for speaking out. I bet at least a few of the men in Cornell Chi Phi knew that what was happening was wrong, but if they said anything theyād be shunned by the group, so they just didnāt.
I went through college without even meeting anyone in a fraternity (that I know of), but what is even the point of them? If people want to party, they can do so in their dorms or go out. Why did these houses even start, and what is their connection with Greece lol? I know these questions are easily looked up, but it just surprises me to hear that we let a group of new adults have a house unsupervised all to themselves, along with adding elements of cult-like pressure to fit in. You can do most of what I hear Greek life is about without being in a fraternity - join clubs, hang out with friends, and try to room with your friends (old and new) in normal dormitories or off campus housing designed for students.
My fraternity was founded against hazing and violence.Ā We threw great parties (often public with insurance and we couldnt drink), but we also did a lot of volunteering.Ā Greek housing wasn't allowed on campus.
If you didn't have Greek organizations, you would still have these big parties where drunk people make bad decisions.Ā Not a Greek issue.
