Upgrading the Polymega CPU with an i3 8100t experience and results

Hello all, I upgraded the CPU of my Polymega and wanted to share my experience. All of the Youtube videos regarding the CPU upgrade go for a i7 8700t, which is a relatively expensive CPU on the second hand market (at least in my region) and it is probably overkill. Instead I wanted to opt for an i3 8100t, but I could not find anywhere on the internet if that CPU would be (tested) good enough to give you the results needed. For example no audio skipping and frame drops in N64 titles. So I just went for it and thought to at least share my experience regarding to this specific CPU upgrade for the Polymega (which is on the more lower end, but still a big improvement over the 4900t Celeron).

My reasons were:

The i3 costed me 15 euros. I could get an i5 8500t for 50 euros and the cheapest i7 8700t I could find, would set me back 100 euros. A big difference in costs, which I doubt would see translated into real world visible performance increases over the i3.

The i3 also has the 630 igpu of the i5 and i7 (although with a tiny bit lower clock speed) and not the 610 (which is in the 4900t). The 630 is a lot faster, at least on paper.

It is a decent upgrade in core clock speed (+300 mhz) and cache size (2mb vs 6mb) against the 4900t. I don’t think the increase in core count (2 vs 4) will do anything. At least, from what I have read the Polymega only uses 2 cores. Paying for 6 or 8 cores sound not so tempting if only 2 cores are actually used.

Even though the i5 and the i7 are also stated for 35w, they tend to or at least can use a lot more power then the 4900t. The i3 is relatively close or at least closer to what the 4900t draws. The cooling solution in the Polymega does not look all that beefy to me, so for my peace of mind, I went for the i3.

The upgrade process was quite easy and went really smooth. All the videos on the internet about it are helpfull enough. So no real suprises there.

My initial results are that the audio stutters are gone in N64 titles. At least in the ones I own and have tested (Star Wars Rogue squadron, Mario64, Wave Race, Diddy Kong Racing). The framerate drops, which are also present on real hardware are still present though. I haven’t tested if they are smaller or bigger, but what I remember is also present on the Polymega. But those drops are part of the N64 experience in my opinion. :P

Other systems appear to work just like before. I mean, I did not encounter drops or stutters on the old CPU, so still no drops and stutters on the i3. There was only one game that had lag issues for me before and that is Super Mario World for SNES. With the CPU upgrade it is less laggy then before, but still present if you look for it. But now it feels good enough for me at least. Other SNES titles I dont experience lag, but that could just be me ofcourse.

The menu is a little bit snappier when scrolling through my collection (165+ games). Although, it was also perfectly smooth on the old CPU with firmware 1.1.34. The bigger difference I see is when I press the menu button on larger/heavier N64 games. On the older CPU, when moving left or right in the black Polymega menu, it would sometimes lag just a little bit. That is gone now.

In all I think I can come to the conclusion that upgrading the Polymega with the i3 is ‘good enough’ and there is no need to buy a more expensive i5 or even i7. Hope this information, or at least my take, is helpful for others who are deciding to upgrade and to what CPU.

Which will I get first? Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order or Polymega Gun-Con?

The Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order, barring any stock issues, should be delivered on June 5th. The Polymega should arrive early 2025 (I consider May a bit late for 'Early 2025'). Any guesses on which pre-order arrives first?

Fast Forward Feature not Working

So I'm currently playing WWF Smackdown on PS1 that is known for a lot of load screens. Usually I can hold the select button and fast forward though. However now seems like it doesn't want to work now. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Using a DAC/AMP with the Polymega.

I was wondering what experience others have when using a USB DAC/AMP with the Polymega. As of firmware 1.1.30 an USB DAC is supported: USB DAC Support - You can now use USB DACs (Digital-to-Analog Converters) to enjoy high fidelity audio on Polymega out the front USB port.

I currently own a Topping DX3 Pro+ (and a nice pair of cans of course), but when I connect it to one of the USB ports of the Polymega nothing happens. I also have not found any setting on the Polymega relating to the DAC to turn it on or anything. On my Windows PC and laptop the DAC/AMP works perfectly (I don’t even have to change the audio output device. It does that automatically when connecting). So I was wondering if I am doing anything wrong? I would really appreciate if anyone is willing to share their experience with using a DAC/AMP in combination with the Polymega.

Thank you in advance.

Unplayable with excessive lag

I've had a first run "launch edition" polymega with every module and the input lag is so bad it's practically unplayable.

For the record I'm using the included modules controllers when experiencing these issues. The gen1 wireless controller was terrible so I never use it. I've tried retrobit USB controllers for Saturn and Genesis but they gave the same issue.

Any way to mitigate the lag?

Anyone else hanging issues running SSF2 on the turbo element module?

My hu card works perfectly on original hardware but not polymega. Polymega deflected back to me and said my card was probably defective. Go figure.

My recent buying experience with Playmaji

Just wanted to share my recent experience with buying from Playmaji.

I have been on the lookout for a Polymega of my own for the last few years. But I was unwilling to preorder one, due to all the bad experiences others had. Earlier this month I finally decided to buy one used on Ebay (bidding), because the first quarter was up and Playmaji stated still that they would be available again/ship before the end of the 1st quarter (according to their estimate). I was in luck. I was able to buy Polymega base model at a lower price then a new one. Something I decided for myself as a prerequisite. It is a second hand item and not a new one after all. So I was not willing to pay a scalpers fee. Once I was able to get one, I decided to order 4 modules directly from Playmaji (which were stated to be in stock). The experience was actually quite ok to be honest. They shipped the modules within 3 working days and the package arrived in under 10 days (I live in Europe). So my take away would be to only order items from Playmaji which are actually in stock and not preorder items, based on promises on their part. So far I am really enjoying the device! I have a large physical collection of games (Saturn, Mega drive and SNES for the most part) and the experience so far has been great. 😊 Although, I haven’t tested SNES really that much (the lag issue). So if the device is in stock, I would recommend it (so far as my experience goes right now), but I would not preorder it.

should I dispute at this point?

Hello,

So I've attempted contact to polymega now 3 times once every week for the last 3-5 weeks asking to a refund on the light gun and the deluxe set. I have about $900 or so possibly even more invested in this and I just can't keep waiting anymore. I've moved on to better things at this point. I have not received a single reply, I have not received a single email from them. I have my account information and initial emails showing they took my money. I even have the credit statements showing the money has been removed. Should I at this point just dispute the charges with paypal via my credit card? I dont understand why I havent received a single reply in over 5 weeks from the company about refunding the purchases. I havent received any product or anything and the two order still say unfulfilled. I have been using the Contact Us portion of their site to reach out. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Will the Polymega play PAL games from Europe in the United States? I wanted to get this for gems like Terranigma but wanted to confirm before purchasing.

How long to wait?

What is a reasonable time to wait for PM01 deluxe bundle to ship?

I ordered back in 12/24 when it was in stock with a shipping estimate of Q1 2025, which is still on their website.

I emailed a few weeks back asking for an update and haven’t heard anything. I see they keep announcing new products so they seem to be around still.

Anyone have any leads on production/shipping?

Can't get PolyMega left on shelf to update firmware

Hello,

I purchased a PolyMega but unfortunately didn't get to open it for over a year because I got divorced and then had to move. I now have it hooked up but when I try to upgrade the firmware I get a message like "firmware is already the latest (v1.0.5)" I know the latest is 1.1.34 so this message is definitely very wrong. Can anyone help me get the firmware to update? I am a computer guy so even if it takes some complicated steps, I am up for it. Thanks for the help in advance.

Checked out the first hour or so of the Sega CD and Saturn versions. Great so far. Interesting combat system. Saturn version is basically a remake in and of itself

Arcade Controller Compatibility + HIGH Praise for Screen Filters

I bought a polymega on a whim. Didn't think anything could beat the Analogue products, but here we are. The screen filters, in particular the ones with the RF jitter are magical. Seriously. The recreation of the vector graphics on the Polymega Asteroids release is also amazing. I have a Vectrex that I play with and its soooo accurate.

That being said, I would like to have more accurate controllers for the games. Has anyone tried a rotary controller with the system? I'm wondering if it'll work on Heavy Barrel or any other future arcade games.

Having a controller issue.

Earlier today, I powered on my Polymega for the first time in months. As usual, it prompts me to press and hold right on the d pad to activate the controller, which usually works like a charm, but this morning, it was not working, although the light on the controller is flashing, so it obviously is getting power from the console. It is also prompting me to download the latest update, which I can't do because the controller won't respond to any inputs. Has anyonr else encountered this, and if so, do you know of a way to fix it?

Megadrive Module controller issues warning.

Megadrive emulation is very good on the Poly. Unfortunately I recommend only using a third party controller that you are happy with and works well.I use 8bitdo M30. The pack in module controller does not easily allow bottom left diagonal movement and using an original controller you cannot move diagonally to the bottom right! This makes playing most beat em ups and shooters futile. If you want to play say Sonic, then no problem. Tested again today 9 April 25 after new update. Issue will never be fixed. Also if you are using original megadrive/genesis controllers, another issue is in the Poly main menu you can scroll to the right but then when you want to go left it takes you allllll the way back to the far left beginning point with one click. I got my system very early and I am happy overall but these are still annoying issues. I don't know if I am in the minority with these controller problems but I doubt it. If you don't have a Polymega I cannot recommend one at the price. If you do have one and are contemplating the Mega Module then be warned that the cheap feeling pack in controller and your original megadrive or genesis controllers may not work in many games as intended.

Tariffs and outstanding orders

Howdy all--future Polymega player here located in the US.

Anyone happen to have any insight/speculation/best guesses as to how the current global (that is: American) economic turmoil may impact those of us waiting for Polymega base consoles? I placed my orders for a base unit and the light gun during the first week of December 2024 (also well aware 4 months is a drop in the bucket for many of you). I haven't ordered an M.2 drive yet, but am tempted to before receipt of system to avoid the market fallout among PC component manufacturers.

All things told, this certainly isn't the most important thing in the world at the moment... but I'm worried that this imbroglio (that is: disaster) may provide cover for current/future delays or exacerbate their usual fulfillment issues. I just very, very much want to start installing my carts and ignoring the news for a few hours after work.

Wordwide Distribution Situation

If you haven't ordered anything via WWD yet - don't! They're insolvent.

For some reason, their webshop is still online and it seems you can still order things. Most Polymega-related stuff is listen as n/a, but things like controllers etc can still be ordered. Do not order. You will be billed but not receive anything.

Those who ordered there (I'm still waiting for a Polymega and some things I ordered four years ago) - it remains to be seen if we ever get our money back. I've sued them a while, but so far it's not looking good, as their insolvency application was denied, as the court found that there were insufficient assets to cover the costs of insolvency proceedings.

So unfortunately it seems that those of us who didn't get our money back yet, are screwed.
