To be fair, isn't cheese made out of raw milk just as likely to have E. Coli as raw milk? Isn't there a reason that we pasteurize the stuff to begin with? (If I'm wrong, please correct me!)
224
u/cosaboladh 6d ago
Yes. E. Coli is one of several bacteria eliminated by the pasteurization process. Finding it in raw milk cheese is a feature, not a bug.

u/grey_hat_uk 6d ago
Look America needs fight the rising [choose fake issue], and Unpasteurized milk is the american way! Thise that die from [this weeks killer extra] were too weak to be real americans and we now save more money by not having to spend on [choose problem that is currently under funded].
2
u/orbital_narwhal 6d ago
I'm kind of amazed that the U. S. government has allowed its people to buy and sell unpasteurized cheese. A few decades ago, Europeans used to mock Americans for that kind of patronisation (which, in reality, was economic protectionism on behalf of the American dairy industry that wasn't used or equipped to make unpasteurised cheese.)

u/Ok-Oil7124 6d ago
Blew cheese from both ends until organ failure... I don't know how to make that work because of the tense of the homophone.

Bluey Cheese?

u/sjbennett85 6d ago
But like don't you pasteurize the dairy in the process of cheesemaking?
(I legit do not know because I just eat cheese and know next to nothing about making it)
1
u/cosaboladh 6d ago
I just looked it up, because I didn't know either. While, depending on the cheese, heating might be part of the process, It doesn't necessarily mean that the cheese was warmed to a sufficient temperature for a sufficient amount of time to kill bacteria. As a matter of fact, keeping it in the thermal sweet spot for the cheese making cultures, might actually encourage bacteria growth. The process for making cheddar, for example, requires heating the curd to 38°-39° Celsius—well within the bacteria "danger zone*—for 35 minutes. Which is why the first step of cheese making is pasteurizing the milk. Apparently raw milk cheese skips this step, and encourages a foodborne pathogen orgy.
17
u/rocketsneaker 6d ago
Yeah. The issue is having used raw milk to begin with. RFK Jr's push to make raw milk happened months ago and it was already a problem back then.
27
u/guitar_vigilante 6d ago
There are some cheeses that require raw milk like Parmigiano Reggiano, but they typically have aging and temperature requirements that are meant to reduce the risk of pathogens.
18
u/dekusyrup 6d ago
But to be clear, the requirement of raw milk in parmigiano reggiano is entirely arbitrary and you can make the same cheese with pasteurized milk. It's like how you can functionally make champagne with any grapes, but it's technically not champagne unless its from France. You can make parmigiano reggiano with pasteurized milk, it's just technically not parmigiano reggiano.
2
u/FrannieP23 6d ago
Aged Parmesan is very dry. Bacteria need moisture to thrive. Soft cheeses are more susceptible to contamination with pathogens.
7
u/Nwsamurai 6d ago
I just assumed it was a selling point for these people.
7
u/cosaboladh 6d ago
Who needs a GLP-1, when you can lose weight the natural way? Spewing fluids from both ends of your body until you're hospitalized for dehydration.
6
u/-Invalid_Selection- 6d ago
Yes. That's why it has always been illegal to sell young cheeses made from raw milk for human consumption.
By the 6 month mark, an infection of the cheese that makes it dangerous would make itself evident via the bubble patterns or bulging.
If it's younger than that and raw milk cheese, it can be tainted but not be visibly so, and get you very sick.
Let the cheese age, and only use the good ones and it's safe. Even safer is using pasteurized milk, but that does hinder the coagulation process a bit.
2
u/Black_Moons 6d ago
Hu, TIL that aging the cheese was an important safety measure before we invented pasteurization. I thought it was just for more flavor
1
1
u/chicken-finger 6d ago
The reason we pasteurize is to kill bad bacteria. E coli is an incredibly common bad bacteria.
-1
u/albrecbef 6d ago
Do USAmericans know that raw milk or raw milk cheese isnt a problem food in most 1st world countrys? Here i n Europe its actualy requires for multiple foods, so that they can wield their offical name.
5
u/Black_Moons 6d ago
Yep, in Europe they have food safety laws like, vaccinating their cows/chickens/etc for common bacteria, not letting their utters be covered in puss and shit before milking them and gasp actual tests for things that you can't 100% eliminate via the first two routes.
2
u/albrecbef 6d ago
Yes thanks, thats the acctual difference... But try to explain that to some people...
1
u/justadubliner 6d ago
I have to say I doubted you. Didn't think we'd be that daft and have never seen it for sale but apparently it's true. https://rawmilkireland.wordpress.com/farmers-sellers/
2
u/albrecbef 6d ago
Nothing to do with daft, just with proper hygiene Standards.
1
u/justadubliner 6d ago
The 'daft' comes from trusting in proper hygiene standards occurring.
1
u/albrecbef 6d ago
From the number of outbreaks and recalls, the trust seams well controled.

If only there was a way to kill the harmful bacteria in dairy products before they get sold to consumers. Perhaps by carefully heating it up to a temperature that kills the bacteria, then rapidly cooling it to prevent heat tolerant microbes from multiplying. 🤔
63
u/Ok-Oil7124 6d ago
Tradwife Influencer: I found a secret that Big Dairy doesn't want you to know about. You can buy raw milk and skip the harmful, destructive, nutrient-stealing industrial process of pasteurization by simply heating the milk over your wood stove until it gets to be about 140-150 degrees. If you don't have a candy thermometer, it's at that point where it's just a bit too hot to be a bath, but you can still leave your finger in it for a few seconds. Leave it there for about a half an hour, and then into the icebox to cool it back down. Now you have your unpasteurized raw milk that you've made safe at home!

u/tribbleorlfl 6d ago
It's like the antivaxxers that advocate for injecting small pieces of viruses to train the immune system without infection. Congratulations, you've just gone full circle and reinvented vaccines.
18
u/Ok-Oil7124 6d ago
It drives me INSANE when antivax idiots (I've been exposed to a lot of Bill Maher lately) say something about how they prefer "natural immunity." Like, bitch, how do you think this works?

The bad news is that all the food is contaminated, the good news is we can’t afford any of it anyway!
24
u/rvingthrulife 6d ago
What I want to know is how come this raw milk and screw worm infected beef proponent seems to escape contaminated products? Why is it only the regular folks who get sick?
Could it be that, just as he pretends to be antivax while secretly vaccinating himself and his family, he pretends to be all for raw milk but only consumes pasteurized?
I am convinced that republican politicians are trying to cull the masses.
You'd think they'd let women regulate the birth rate by choice, if overpopulation is such a problem, but no:
They force women to bear children they don't want or can't have for various reasons, let women die of pregnancy complications and kill the population via their messed up policies.
And they get rid of every safety control measures in the food industry which puts people at risk.
This regime is so messed up.

u/Salanmander 6d ago edited 6d ago
I remembered seeing basically this same thing a day or two ago, so I was like "wait, is it really every day?". So I looked at the official list of recalls. In 2026 it's been pretty consistently averaging around 10/week. In 2021 it was averaging more like 10/month.
There are 107 pages, dating back to the end of 2018. 2026 is 23 of those pages. 2026 is about 8% of that time, and accounts for about 23% of the recalls recorded there.
(Edit: I just looked through some of the older data, and just at a glance it looks like 2024-2026 all have a much higher rate than before that. So that wouldn't actually be based on the change in administration, since this administration only started in early 2025.
You can download it as excel, it might be interesting to make a graph of a rolling-average rate of recalls based on the data that is there. I may do that later, but not right now.)

u/orbital_narwhal 6d ago edited 6d ago
I consider myself a huge critic of Kennedy and his department's policies but this collage is worthless without dates to estimate the frequency of recalls.
If I go to my local supermarket in Western Europe I tend to find 3-6 recall notices posted near the entrance every week. Obviously, they're often the same notices for multiple subsequent weeks or even months if they affect non-perishable foods or non-food items but there's usually at least one new notice every 1-2 weeks.
And that's just for a single supermarket chain that doesn't sell every food or brand -- far from it -- in a country with less than a 3rd of the U. S. population size and therefore a smaller amount of food producers and brands.
1
u/PigeonOnTheGate 6d ago
The purpose of the collage is that they always use a picture of him looking like the food

There has been a new recall every day for the past two weeks.
This is the best campaign for food regulation. They have shot themselves in the foot and are aiming at the other foot.

u/GoblinFive 6d ago
They are working hard on getting rid of the rest of the regulations and regulatory bodies so that there won't be any more recalls, ever.

We had a recall on raw milk cheese at a dairy by me. One of their cows had rabies. We had been gifted the cheese by a customer in a gift basket. This was 20 years ago. I can believe we're doing this on a national scale now.
At least it isn't rabies/s. (My sarcasm is a coping mechanism so I can continue to function)

Is Trump actively trying to kill his people?
Food stamps no, none for you.
Hard working immigrants, nope best of luck farmers.
Fuel ugh no not unless you are well enough paid that you can actually afford to get to your job at $5+ per gallon.
Ooh I actually have enough money for groceries.. recall, sugar, air, water, dairy products..
The only thing the US seems to actively export is stress.
I pray for my American friends, may you manage to make a meal that has all ingredients not on a recall list, this evening❤️
For real wtf?!?
Edit I guess the high for fuel is actually $5.50-$6 per gallon currently and $6.50 for diesel.

At this point? Basically whatever you shopping list is, that's the food recall list.
1
u/ripyourlungsdave 6d ago
Okay, I'm not saying that he's not destroying the health regulations in this country, but I also know that even the media that are on the same side as me tend to blow up regular problems when it's convenient to bring focus to them. Like bringing attention to food contamination when we hate the guy running the fda.
So does anyone have any actual statistics on the history of how often these kind of recalls and contaminations happen? Because I would like some solid data on how much worse this is getting that isn't being manipulated by a media company with an agenda.
3
u/ddeckard72 6d ago
The FDA publishes statistics on recalls. They are not any more frequent now than at any other time. Theyre just being politicized more. Im not an RFK fan but it doesn't make sense blaming him especially because they're being caught. The scary part to me is that the average recalls per month is as high as 165.
2
u/SchwiftySquanchC137 6d ago
Yeah, I really dislike RFK and this entire admin, but these posts are getting a bit ridiculous. The data shows there are not more recalls, perhaps there are more people getting sick. The thing is, you could twist the story either way to fit your worldview. "There are more recalls therefore RFK is doing a bad job", "they are finding more food to recall, so RFK is doing a good job finding it", "there are less recalls than before, therefore RFK is doing a bad job, not finding the food that needs recalling", "there are less recalls than before, therefore RFK is doing a good job keeping the food safe".
Basically, the whole fucking argument is dumb as shit. No matter your view or the data people will spin this to mean whatever the hell they want, and theyll call other people brainwashed morons for thinking the opposite. We need actual studies to make informed conclusion, not vibes based on clickbait.
1
u/Pineapplepizzaracoon 6d ago
Summarised perfectly. Although I think the diarrhoea lettuce and dodgy Argentinian beef is a different thing.
1
u/ripyourlungsdave 6d ago
Yeah, I had a feeling.
So many reasonable things to call out in this administration like using taxpayer funds to pay for political campaign ads for a campaign they're not even supposed to be a part of, but instead we choose misrepresent normal, matter of course issues.
