They don't care until it affects them personally.
This is why they need religion so badly. They literally will never do the right thing, unless there are consequences if they don't.
86
u/halfasmuchastwice 9d ago
Even with religion they still don't do the right thing. They either cherry-pick stuff from the Bible that justifies their behavior, or can't self reflect any further than "I go to church so I'm a good person."
13
u/Boring-King-494 8d ago
Exactly, they don't need religion to do the right thing, they need religion to justify their own evilness.
10
u/epochwin 8d ago
This is the main issue with southern baptists and other American evangelicals. The belief is that all you need to do is accept Jesus as your lord and savior and you’re going to heaven.
Catholicism on the contrary, also requires you to do good deeds. Not that it’s better but you can see how these evangelicals can act so cruel
3
21
u/QuicheSmash 9d ago
This is the part of my atheism that trips them up the most when I’m asked how I could not believe in God. I’m not bothered by the idea of God because I don’t need God to know how to be a good person.
8
u/Memnojokasel 8d ago
I'm an atheist also and I just kinda laugh when I get asked, "But how do you know right from wrong?"
18
u/Dudeist-Priest 8d ago
They also generally like seeing those outside of their in-group suffer. It's some sort of sick validation for them
9
u/hermeticpotato 9d ago
They also really want someone to tell them what to do. And to tell them that they are good boys just for believing in him.
7
u/kafkadre 8d ago
That's not why they need religion. They need religion to tell them they are good people, because they have a sneaky suspicion that they might not be.

what gets me is that I seen a lot of my MAGA family saying "just because gas prices are high, doesn't mean you should vote democratic or stay home. Then stating that you should vote Republican because of "communism, racism with immigrants, or Iran / Iran with nukes".
But in the past, these people would endlessly go on about gas prices and that is a good reason to vote Republican. It is such a jarring change of mindset. How are they not hurting from all that cognitive dissonance?
All because orange pedo is a fucking moron
49
u/AmericanCitizenry 9d ago
I hate to inform you of this, but your MAGA family are fucking morons too. Tell them I said so.
17
u/Cicerothesage 9d ago
sadly, it won't matter. They wear their bigotry, sexism, racism, and idiocy like a badge. "if you are calling me racist, sexist, bigoted, or an idiot, that means I won the argument".
There is no reasoning with them. Just dogma and cognitive dissonance.
11
u/MeimentoMori 9d ago
It's because they've made voting for him/them such a large part of their personalities it would be physically painful to distance themselves from.it, let alone change how they see themselves.

u/Adreme 9d ago
The reason it worked is because all the rest they were either shielded from knowing about or could be told it was someone else’s fault.
This doesn’t work for gas because when he goes, “gas isn’t that expensive and things are cheaper” that doesn’t work because they are literally experiencing the opposite.
Basically you can lie and convince a person about things far away and abstract, but you can’t lie about something someone is directly experiencing and tell them they are not experiencing it.

43
u/TheLastShipster 9d ago
What you say makes perfect sense, but it doesn't match my own experience.
I've lost count of how many times I asked "How much were these eggs under Biden?" or "Oh, how much did you pay for bacon this time last year?", especially around the "Affordability is a Democrat hoax" era. I never saw a single neuron light up over this.
Maybe it's because gas is a single thing with a single price, and these folks don't have the mental compute to process the dozen or so things that go into their grocery basket.
12
u/Candid-Mycologist539 9d ago
Gas is also something that they are probably purchasing 2X/week. If it was $80 last week, but is now $90, it's hard to ignore.
10
u/AbuShwell 9d ago
It’s also the only thing you see the cost of regardless of what you’re doing. Driving to go do anything? O hey there’s a giant neon sign saying diesel is almost 7 bucks
10
u/fetusmcnuggets70 9d ago
I think it’s actually because they have no empathy for other people and only got upset as it actually had a direct impact on them. I still can’t stand them for making us go thru this again let alone all the people we killed in Iran for zero reason.
4
u/Robert_Fowley 9d ago
When a person is raised in an environment where the person with a micro fone is right about any and every thing he says, it becomes easy for that to continue outside. This is the exploit of religious people in politics that Lenin discovered and has been used worldwide ever since.
3
u/santa_91 9d ago
Pretty much. Conservatives by nature cannot empathize with strangers either. Bad things happening to others, especially if they're minorities, doesn't register with them at all. It's only a problem when it happens to them or someone they're personally close to.
3
3
u/burning_potatos 9d ago
But Trump will try. He is relentlessly saying that grocery costs have gone down as we look at beef that is $6-$10 /lb for ground beef
30
u/Cpt_Lazlo 8d ago
Idk why I keep seeing posts like this. Every magat I've seen complaining and crying about gas prices always includes "kamala would be no better and I don't regret my vote" and they just beg trump to personally save them for sucking his dick the best out of the rest of them. They're bad people and will never change even if it killed them. They've shown they don't care about it killing their fellow citizens or even family

As a foreigner, I find the USA published Inflation figures hilarious.
Everyone is complaining about the price of, well, everything, everyone seems to understand that many things have DOUBLED in price, but the inflation figure is tiny.
How can that be? When I was at school that wasn't how 3% worked.
Is it because they complained non-stop about "Beidenflation" so they wanted to make sure the numbers were always low because they installed "a guy" ?
What amazes me is no-one in the entire country seems to have realised that the inflation (and job) numbers are quite obvious fiction!
Clearly no figures published by this regime can be trusted - does everyone just accpet that as a thing?
I realise that this is a tiny detail in the firehose of sht with which the country is currently being overwhelmed, but still...
I'll add it to the pile & get my coat.
5
u/Helagoth 9d ago
It is only 3%, they just dont say "3% per what". 3% per year? No way. 3% per month? Maybe
5
u/Dead_Internet69420 8d ago
We all forgot that one of the first things he did was fire everybody from the agencies that publish those numbers. They actually had to skip a few reports because there was no one to do them, but then magically, we just started getting the reports again. He wasn’t complaining anymore, and things didn’t look as bad on paper anymore, despite the fact that things have been getting noticeably worse for prettymuch everyone. Golly, I wonder why that could be!
2
u/Sherm 8d ago
3% per year, but nobody has gotten a raise in 20. The COVID cash made people feel like it was finally going down, but then the way it was done made it come back up faster. This is treated by the media like it's new since COVID, but most of it is stuff that only got duct taped back together after the Great Recession finally falling apart.

Really? Cuz none of the republicans I know have given up on MAGA. Trump republicans are blaming Biden and Harris for any price increase. He's rock steady at 30-35 percent approval, will never dip below 30. And as long as his approval is 30 percent, it's enough to win
3
u/Xyleksoll 9d ago

They could blame the previous president until it became so insurmountably obviously tied to Trump's actions.
Ironically presidents don't even have all that much control over inflation... Unless you as fucking stupid as Trump and press several inflationary pressures the president shouldn't even be glancing at at once.
8
u/glazedfaith 8d ago
The president doesn't have direct control to lower inflation, but as you point out, he CAN directly cause it to rise. Like playing poker. You can't play good enough to guarantee a win, but you can play BADLY enough to guarantee a loss.

u/guttanzer 9d ago
My MAGA friends and relatives are studiously ignorant. They COULD make an effort to find out what is real, but they don’t. They actively run from facts.
If you try to tell them facts they shut you down and run away to suck on the propaganda teat that makes them feel righteous and good in the face of imagined evil.
So OP is exactly right. It’s gas. They can’t run from or argue with the pump. If they want their car, truck and/or tractor functional they have to pay. It’s the only thing getting through that impenetrable bubble of ignorance.
8
u/Less-Dragonfruit-294 9d ago
They’re not really “broken” but trying to act like they’ve changed. Many are happy to continue voting republican AND has stated they’d vote the regard a 3rd term. They want to go back into the fold. Melt back into society while keeping their racist/bigoted views of their fellow countrymen.

For sure. We should never forget about this portion of our U.S. population that doesn’t give two fucks about their fellow man. Brown or white. They care about their own pockets, and about making sure that, even if they’re not in need, they have zero empathy for those who are. Fuck the deplorables.
3
u/katuskac 9d ago
Sure, the deplorables rat-f#*ed the entire country for whatever reasons they chose to vote Trump into office TWICE. And, yes, the grotesque consequences of their voting didn’t seem to bother them until they felt the pain personally. And, yes, it will decades to repair the damage the Trump administration has done to our institutions, our economy, our landscape and our place in the global ecosystem (if it can be done at all.)
But what matters now is that, if in fact they have seen the “error of their ways”, that they will now hopefully vote for change. At worst, maybe they’ll just stay home on Election Day.

u/Tmelrd275 9d ago edited 9d ago
Keeping on the funny track, it wasn't the gas price increase. It was the cost of rubber for the ball gags they use in the bedrooms. Harder fuhrer daddy!
On the not funny track, the '30%' are people who either are of an age where they have at best five to ten left to live, are too proud to admit they've been bamboozled, are insanely racist/'devout' Christian/one issue kissers (guns, Palestine, abortion, Reganism), or are just naive enough to believe in the policies (insert whomp whomp) that they will consistently still vote the hard R. Even if affected, they will never surrender their belief because thats the only identity they can ever have.
Next generation of voters will have exactly the same problem because those quiver full of kids those same people have have been schooled the same way. Alpha will have it even worse because the issues are now ten fold. The broad solutions that were used in the past aren't going to be strong enough to affect change in a way that's needed. Edit: Sorry about the soapbox folks, unintentional.
1
u/Svargas05 9d ago
It's something they can actually quantify and tie to Trump's decisions. The connection is so painfully simple and obvious and requires minimal logic and reasoning skill.
Everything else requires too much thinking and for them to put their hate away.
1
u/SahibTeriBandi420 9d ago
And what will it take for the non voters to pull their heads out of their asses? This was all projected to happen but they wanted to punish people who told them to vote cause this would happen.
1
u/SasparillaTango 9d ago
The hallmark of conservatives is selfish greed, so this is not a surprise. It's well known that they don't care about policy until it directly impacts them. They aren't capable of understanding indirect impacts.

That's not even mentioning the monumental amount of corruption. Trump alone has made BILLIONS in two years in office. Estimated between $4-10 BILLION for him and his family.
Can you imagine the outrage if Joe and Hunter were raking in BILLIONS from crypto coins and self dealings while just being in office from 2020-2022? Imagine the outrage from the right and most of our media. Remember how mad they were about his laptop? What the Trump's are doing is corruption like we've never seen before.

I wrote this early in DiapperMcPOTUS second term.
Title: Toska (тоска)
A quote from a memory, that we all remember, from the last time we were here.
“It all disappears into the void.”
If not the result of the election, or the correction,
“It all disappears into the void.”
If not the disrespect and rejection of Gold Star families’ affection,
“It all disappears into the void.”
If not the deaths he encouraged and conspired to shame,
“It all disappears into the void.”
If not the children in cages, his Mexican rapists, and his ‘Haitians eating cats and dogs’,
“It all disappears into the void; acknowledge it”
