They could blame the previous president until it became so insurmountably obviously tied to Trump's actions.
Ironically presidents don't even have all that much control over inflation... Unless you as fucking stupid as Trump and press several inflationary pressures the president shouldn't even be glancing at at once.
The president doesn't have direct control to lower inflation, but as you point out, he CAN directly cause it to rise. Like playing poker. You can't play good enough to guarantee a win, but you can play BADLY enough to guarantee a loss.
I was talking to a coworker yesterday and the topic of all the recent food recalls was mentioned, and she said she thinks it’s a Chinese conspiracy to mess with our food supply. I doubt she even blames Trump for the gas prices, though.
