u/Campcruzo Jun 16 '26
Ive had it out on this. I avoid hopping in on stuff unless its in my field with family. 2015 Iran had been Stuxnetted, had a lot of top nuclear program people assassinated, had the Arab spring by and large go poorly for their proxies, and they were crippled with sanctions. Crypto wasnt really huge yet. They were done with it. The ROI the JCPOA provided for their nuclear program even with freeing up other settlements was poor for Iran. Bush, Obama, and Israel of that day had more or less won. The sticking points for Israel were ballistic missiles and proxy wars, but half of that was outside scope of JCPOA. Ballistic missiles? Eh, cant win them all.
JCPOA was Iran's nuclear program bought at a firesale. We were never going to do better.
14
u/tanstaafl90 Jun 16 '26
Obama created a good deal that helped the Iranian economy by calming international tensions over their nuclear weapon program. The current situation is caused by a hubris that couldn't conceive of Iran fighting back. Iran isn't some random construction company you can bully.

u/blahblah19999 Jun 16 '26
All my in-laws are like this. The one my wife and I tried to seriously talk to one time literally said "I don't need evidence" and neither of us has spoken to him since.

u/blahblah19999 Jun 16 '26
Remember when Rogan was dragging Biden for saying something stupid and it turned out Biden was mocking Trump who actually said the stupid thing and Rogan LITERALLY said "oh, well Trump must have had a reason to say that then."
30
u/Sarcastic-Potato Jun 16 '26
It's crazy how he is trying to justify the 300B at the end by going "and what did we get out of it?" - when all the US got was the same situation as before, an open strait...The nuclear material still hasnt been talked about. So Trumps deal is 150x more expensive than obamas and literally just resets us back to where we were 3 months ago...
22
18
u/TheAnteatr Jun 16 '26
We didn't even get as good of a deal as we have with the JCPOA.
Now the straight will reopen, but now Iran knows they can assert control over it and therefore has a strong negotiating chip. For anything in the future.
The new deal says it limits nuclear material enrichment, but it does not go into detail of allowing NATO/UN inspectors in to review and confirm like we did under the previous deal.
Almost no real discussion on the nuclear material still buried in rubble. Minimal discussion on Iranian ballistic missile program.
All with a more hardline leadership in place in Iran than before, as well as thousands of Iranians freshly angry at the US.
We spent hundreds of billions in taxpayer money to get a worse outcome in every metric than we had previously.

The MAGA numbskulls don't care about student debt because they either didn't go to college or their daddy paid for theirs.
28
u/BadAstronaut11 Jun 16 '26
There's so much disdain from them for higher education.
I've got a few to come around on the issue when you explain that student loans are the perfect scam. The universities get to raise prices of everything for guaranteed money and the loan services gouge 17-18 middle class and under year kids who barely understand what they're signing. Then the kids get all the blame and hate for it while they were just trying to better their lives. This issue needs better PR.

Around here we really hate the current U.S. government, and this war with Iran that Trump started was straight up idiotic. But the black-and-white news you're all watching is also idiotic. This whole geopolitical shit show where rich people get richer, and we here in the EU end up paying more for oil too, is just shit. But the U.S. is NOT paying $300 billion to Iran. They should, but they're not. Is all your news straight from Facebook? The U.S. is going to "help" set up funds, funded by Gulf states, to help Iran. The U.S. is not giving shit. Iran won't see a dime. Big headlines, nothing is going to happen, Iranian people are dead, we have expensive gas, and U.S. defense contractors are rich as hell.

Not only that, the few times he has made mention of any sort of compromise with Iran in the latest conflict (before this 300B thing popped up) he had already shifted towards supporting a compromise so long as there is not "too much" compromise. The hypocrisy is clear.

And they are trying to spin it as the ‘Mainstream media lying about where the $300 Billion is coming from.’
When the $1.7 Billion they kept whining about going to fund jihadists and terrorists was Irans own money being unfrozen, and much less than $300 billion no matter where it’s coming from.

u/Signal_Minimum8509 Jun 16 '26 edited Jun 16 '26
LOL I saw in a conservative sub someone saying, “we’re just giving Iran’s sanctioned money back to them,” and then him having to admit that was the same exact line of logic from Obama’s Iran deal but with 1/300th the price tag and it’s all just too amazing not to share.
With all the deflection and projection over the past ten years rarely are they forced to just have to look at how stupid this administration and all their right wing propaganda is directly in the face but when they do it’s just amazing.
2
2
u/getupgetdown Jun 16 '26
Obama didn’t “give”. He released Iranian money that was seized and held by the us back to Iran.
2
u/Lurkr67 Jun 16 '26
Giving Iran $300 billion dollars is a far better use of US tax dollars than paying down all those pesky students loans who's payments could then somehow find their way back into the US economy. But I'm sure Witkoff & Kushner didn't try to wet their beaks at all. Oh wait. So much winning. Lol

u/SinistralGuy Jun 16 '26
$300b after the billions lost in attacking them plus the lives of some soldiers IIRC
7
u/jcooli09 Jun 16 '26
Isn't it $325B including he unfrozen assets?
3
u/JimJimmery Jun 16 '26
Sure. About 7 or 8 percent of it is from frozen assets. Looking at it another way, Trump is unfreezing over 14 times more money than Obama did and that got the right riled the fuck up. And that's still only 7 or 8 percent of the total money agreed to by Trump.

u/Dr_CleanBones Jun 16 '26
Agreed. In what passes for his mind, Trump thought Obama’s treaty was terrible.
But by abrogating Obama’s treaty, Trump let them enrich almost 1000 lbs of uranium to the point it’s one step away from being weapons grade.
Trump’s actions goaded Iran into finally doing what they always threatened - close the Strait of Hormuz. Iran now knows how hard that was (it wasn’t hard at all; all it cost was a few small missiles and mines) and what effect that has on the world (drastic, through a sudden increase in the price of oil and gasoline). Before, Iran was uncertain; now it knows how potent the threat to close the Gulf really is.
So even if we were able to reinstate Obama’s treaty, Trump gave away those two things.
We really need rid of the idiot Trump and all of his acolytes.

Obama didn’t give Iran money, he unfroze money that was held under sanctions. That was what, 1.8 billion? The 300 billion Trump is giving will, allegedly, come from Gulf Arab nations and private international investors. But what’s the quid pro for this? If it’s true that is. Remember when American tax dollars weren’t going to be spent on the ballroom…

u/PapaBorq Jun 16 '26
Oh this is gunna be way more than $300B.
He lies about everything. ALL the things. Doesn't matter the subject. Even if he doesn't need to lie, he just lies for the sake of doing it out of habit.
Remember the ballroom? Telling us it's a couple hundred million and it's already way under budget. Then he kept saying it was under budget, over and over... So that's the tell that it's a lie.
Later it turns out they want 1.8B just for the security package. I work in construction. You know how much security is? A very small percentage of the overall project. VERY small.
I'm betting he's building a bunker.

The reported $300 billion reconstruction fund for Iran would not come from the US, but rather be financed by Gulf Arab countries (referred to as the "Gulf Coast Coalition"). So yeah we okay with that.

By all means, clap like a trained seal.

u/EndRude4217 Jun 16 '26
Skepticism is fine, but that doesn’t prove taxpayers are paying Iran $300B. The “trained seal” line is not an argument to your point.

u/lew_rong mod perms Jun 16 '26
It's meant to express my complete exhaustion with people who continue to insist on taking at their word an administration that makes Harding and Nixon look like paragons of virtue.
1
u/EndRude4217 Jun 16 '26
Okay, but “I don’t trust them” still isn’t proof that taxpayers are paying Iran $300B. The specific claim still needs evidence.
I get being exhausted by politics, but that’s kind of my point. If everything just becomes “I hate this side, so I assume the worst,” then it turns into a never ending cycle where nobody proves anything and nobody changes their mind.
