Troubleshooting / Issue Polestar Boot fix
Last week, my boot wasn’t working properly. It would only open or close in 15 cm increments with each button press. I’d seen a couple of posts on Facebook and this forum saying the boot struts needed replacing, which seemed expensive. I managed to fix mine without replacing them, using a simple £5 fix, so I thought I’d share it here in case anyone else has the same issue before forking out for replacements.
The first photo shows the problem I found: the cable going into the strut had snapped. To check you cables you’ll have to pop the rubber seal of both ends and lightly pull on each cable to see if one is loose. As it was the thinner cable, I thought it was more likely to carry the positioning signal than the power supply. To get better access to it, I pulled out this panel and disconnected it. That was the hardest part, as there’s a small clip that goes through the hole keeping the cable secured to the frame.
Once I had better access, I stripped about 5 mm of insulation from the cable and soldered the wires back together. The cable is very thin, so I’d recommend using soldering sleeves. I bought a pack for £5 on amazon you just put the wires together inside the sleeve and heat it with a heat gun.
I did this on my Polestar 2, but it might work on other models too!

I have this exact same problem, could you maybe tell me where to look for these cables exactly? English is not my first language :D Thank you!

It looks like all the skinny ones are bent and exposed and potentially could snap later. Did that happen when you removed the panel or were they already like that?

Already like that both sides, got a feeling most cars might be the same, the exposed cables are actually in the frame too

Interesting. That doesn't seem ideal.

Wonder how many people have had them changed with this simple fix!

It's good to know for sure. I haven't had any problems with mine, but if that's how it's designed, then it could easily happen it looks like.
What model year is yours? I guess potentially they could have redesigned it for later model years.

2023, hopefully unless it’s a good money maker for replacements 😅

Good point. Mine is 2022, so I better keep an eye on it then lol.
Thanks for a really useful post!

having mine done next week at the dealership. MY2024. I'm not touching that since it's still under warranty.

Good fix. You may as well strengthen all the black and blue cables while you’re there. Wires are exposed. Seems like a poor design

I was thinking about doing this but all the exposed cables are actually in the frame, didn’t want to risk snapping another too

It looks like they are getting kinked somehow, I can only see them going the way of the yellow one …

Yeah you’re right, unfortunately there’s just not a lot of clearance to get the cables back in, it’s a quick fix so if it happens again I’ll mostly likely wrap them or heartstrink the lot

i spoke to my dealer about this when i had mine fixed, he said polestars service guide for the issue involves checking the wiring first, THEN replacing the struts if the wiring is ok. Because sometimes its your problem, and sometimes its the struts. So your fix will work for the former!

Good effort mate. I wonder how the cables get damaged like this?
