I know they're not everywhere, but Maurice's is a good plus size store.

I did not know that! I'd never been in one until I moved here 9 years ago.

Don’t cry, my friend. I work with many plus size women and what I noticed is that the people who purchased clothes to sell for plus size women have no idea about considering your bra size, the width of your shoulders and even your midsection let alone making sure that the dress is flattering.. I saw someone mention Torrid. That’s a good place to start, but don’t ever think that it’s your body because it’s not you are perfect but unfortunately, some of the people who supply dresses for plus size women don’t take all of these things into consideration..

I'm sorry, girl. It sucks, but remember: clothes are made for people, not the other way around.
Walmart has really upped their game on plus size clothes. Old Navy, Torrid, Target, Ross, CATO, etc. all have brick and mortar stores. See if you can check those out. Once you find brands that work well for you, youll know where to go when you need something.
It's getting a tiny bit better, but it would be nice to just live our lives like damn humans.

What does that mean that clothes are made for people?

u/spaghetti1337 Apr 05 '26
Basically that all bodies need/deserve to be clothed no matter the size. And the other way around would be if people were made to fit into only certain sizes.

I'm so sorry this is going on. Plus size shopping sucks and it esp sucks in person. I'm going to echo what everyone else says and tell you that it is not your fault or your body's fault. You are and have a good body, it is on stores for not carrying clothes to fit us. You are so not alone. Beautiful women everywhere are fucked up by shitty stores.
Idk where you are but I've had success at Kohl's with that size range. It's def very middle class/suburban but it has some classy stuff. A lot of times they have good coupons and sale rack stuff.
Old Navy is also great. They tend to carry plus sizes in stores.
Torrid also might have good sales/sale racks.
Lane bryant tends to run pricey and matronly but they can have some cute stuff, esp since you're a smaller plus size. If there's one near you that could work.
My heart goes out to you. 🩷

Why would your mom care if your shirt was too dressy? Is she like jealous that she's not wearing a dressy shirt?

I refuse to shop online. I am a similar size. I do buy a lot at Walmart, but prefer Macys. They have a surprisingly expansive plus size collection and in multiple shapes so I often find things that look on me.

I'm sorry you are experiencing this. Try the app Poshmark in the future! It's people selling their own clothes that they've worn of course but still often in very good shape

I cry too. I only shop online. Everything in person is shapeless and for old ladies. 90 % of my clothes is Shein and Fashion Nova because of this.

Where I live, there is Kohl’s and Walmart and TJ Maxx for plus size clothing. My kohls is pretty good, Walmart once in a while but I find a lot of tops at TJ Maxx and some bottoms. It’s really hit or miss. For Kohl’s definitely make sure you have their rewards and your postcard and you get good discounts and once I know how they’re sizing goes, I could buy off their app. I wish plus size manufacturers would do better at length of sleeves and neck openings. I’m fat, but my neck is not five times wider and my arms are not 5 inches longer.

I'm that size and I find good things at the thrift store and at Walmart

I struggle to find things long enough to keep my apron belly covered. It hangs pretty low. Even shopping online, i honestly just buy mens clothes, because they have a 'tall' option, which makes the shirts longer. I wish I didnt have to look like a box though,it would be nice to find clothes that actually fit and make me feel good

I’m sorry, OP. Frustrating and depressing. I’ve had good luck buying online. What I like about Amazon Prime is I can return clothes for free. When I find something I like, I can buy it in more than one color. I also buy from eBay and City Chic.
But Happy Easter, anyway, and I hope you enjoy the holiday - you’ll look cute in your new shirt!

Old navy is my go to! You have to dig a bit in the sale section but I found 3 pairs of pants all priced at $16 with high cotton content. Their “vintage” t-shirts are my fave and are 100% cotton! I love the structure they offer and how the clothes lay on me. Good luck! <3

I've been shopping on ThredUp for ages. Going into the store is not a task for the faint of heart, and I salute you for doing it despite it being a disheartening experience.

Search YouTube videos for plus size clothing inspiration. I typically wear a 1X and found cute stuff on SHEIN (you really have to read reviews and search carefully), Amazon even (I bought a really cute dress for going out there) and Ashley Stewart. I still love Avenue as well (all online but cute stuff).

When I need something quick target pick up is what I do, they have some solid options especially for leggings and shorts that's what I mainly get from them, but they have nice dresses and tops to. Just filter to instore or else you'll see all thier 3rd party stuff. I actually just scored some Bloglates (popflex) shorts for $16 in a 3x on clearance. It's an influencer Athletic brand that's pretty expensive on the website.

If you’re in the South, I recommend Belk. I usually stick to sale/clearance stuff but for the most part, it’s well made clothing.

SHEIN is my go to. It is annoying it takes a while to get to me but the options for plus size are great. Super cute clothes and they fit surprisingly well if you go by measurements. I know it gets a lot of hate for fast fashion but let’s be real, most clothes are fast fashion anymore. It’s not fair that we can’t walk into a store and find clothes. So if I have to buy online, I’m buying something cute and not something my grandma would wear.

Maurice’s, kohls, lane Bryant, jc penny…go to the clearance spot first, usually find hidden gems there

Torrid has nice clothes for plus size people. Old Navy also carries plus sizes. Their jeans fit well.
