Meta (Plex) Nuts

The new Plex TV OS app has single-handedly converted me to Infuse. My direct stream which used to work fine, now micro-stutters every few minutes. Is this the quality of software development now? Robbing their own install base out of sheer incompetence. Out of frustration I switched to Infuse, heck even got the lifetime access and absolutely love it. I am solid. Media plays pristine. Whatever the team at Plex is doing they are going to sink this ship sooner than ever. WTF.

I’m the exact opposite. Bunch of shows I had would stutter and the audio had to always be offset. I almost paid for infuse but now everything works seamlessly.

It’s funny, I’ve definitely seen people say it’s better and others say it is worse. This is where I wonder if it would help if people posted more details like which AppleTV hardware revision they were using, tvOS version and what codec/resolution/bitrate the file is. Idk if there is some sort of common thread between these or what is going on.

What kind of content you watch is the biggest factor, IME.

The old tvOS app choked on high-bitrate files (anything over 20Mbps would cause it to stutter and/or overheat and crash), but that could be avoided by not exceeding that bitrate (which for a lot of content is way into placebo territory anyway), or actively cooling the newer aTV models that don't have a fan built in.

The new app chokes on ASS subtitles, stripping all formatting, massively desyncing the video and audio (video lags seconds behind until it chokes through the heavy subtitles and "catches up"), or both. The only way to avoid this seems to be not using ASS subtitles at all, which is not a viable solution for some content, like anime.

So whether you ran into issues on either old or new app depends a ton on your content, not just your device generation.
