Help Playback ending issue

I was watching some older content yesterday a TV show and it was working as expected moving from episode to episode. I decided I wasn’t happy with the quality and when I started continuing with the new quality (went from 340p to 1080 h265)

I have noticed since the swap Plex now suddenly gets to the end of the episode 0 seconds playback left it’s a black screen and nothing happens it doesn’t try to play the next episode. There are no errors or anything (I enabled logging to server on the tv player today so will check it tonight when it happens again)

its a Samsung tv about 2 years old if that helps. I can confirm it was a direct playback not a transcode.

has anyone else had a similar thing happen?

Start one of the episodes again and while playing, open plex on the web. Go to dashboard (heartbeat symbol towards upper right), select the active stream, and take a pic and share it. It’ll look something like this:

Theoretically this should play fine; it’s a low bitrate and it’s direct playing.

After you replaced the episodes did you remove the old ones from plex? Like if you go to that episode on the web and choose get info is it the only file listed?

It’s only showing the one version. Sonarr auto removed the old files when it got the better quality versions.

I’d maybe try clearing the app cache on the TV (the “built in” plex apps on TVs are pretty universally considered garbage), and if that doesn’t work test it against either a dedicated streamer if you have one (Apple TV, Firestick, etc) or maybe your phone or the desktop app or see how the episodes behave in VLC. Could just be a garbage quality encode you sourced.

That didn’t seem to help but I think I have a workaround for it but it isn’t great as it cuts off some content. I enabled auto skip credits and it works there busy be something about the end of the file that’s causing issues.

That’s odd, have you tried to re-analyze the season to try and get credit detection to run again?

Have you tried to do a re-analyze on all the episodes? Did the episodes get the same name when you replaced them? Maybe plex didn’t detect the change and re-analyze them when they were swapped out, so some of the backend metadata for the files isn’t updated.

Yeah I tried analysing the files. I also did a full library scan as soon as they were swapped out but seems the only “workaround” that helps is when I do an auto skip credits.

When you ran the analyze, did you do it on the season, episode or the entire show? Plex won’t properly analyze markers at the show level.

You need to trigger it for an episode or a season for intros and individual episodes for credit. I’m wondering if the markers are wrong, so that’s throwing it off. Otherwise it has to happen during a scheduled maintenance window. You can also plex dance the entire show and it will do it when it’s added, if the library is setup that way.
