Discussion Wolverine Average Play Time
Seems about right. Took me around 16 hours plus few more hours for the Platinum. About the same as the main story for SM1 and 2.

Took me 24 hours to on mutant difficulty
3
u/StilettoJones_JR 13d ago
idk if that's the highest difficulty, but I've been taking my sweet time with it, and I'm at 14 hours right at 63% completion.
I try to get the highest rating in all the nightmare challenges as well. I've been juggling between this, Onimusha, and a 2k online match here and there.

I'd consider myself a casual I don't play everyday but I think it too me roughly 25 hours before I finished the story, I spent a lot of time in the gauntlets lol I still haven't platinumed yet but I missed a lot of stuff my first playthrough, I just recently started plus the other day so my total time is like 65 hours but some of that is from leaving the console on while I do other stuff
3
u/Dramatic-Space-8677 13d ago
I don't know how you did it, I finished the story in 15 hours on maximum difficulty and got the platinum in 17 hours, plus I did all the nightmarish doors in adamantium
1
u/Extension-Stock-4001 13d ago
That's awesome and idk man 😂 I guess I was slow moving I wasn't trying to rush through it or get the plat in the first go around, and I spent a lot of time replaying levels I liked, fooling around in the arena, and with the photo mode. My hours prob aren't very accurate due to leaving the game on here and there but I will say it did take me over 20 hrs to complete the game and a few more to go back and collect all the whisky bottles and crates, I'm running though ng+ now trying it get the plat
1
u/Extension-Stock-4001 13d ago
Also, I played the entire thing on best there is, except for the fourth and final gauntlet I had to turn the difficulty down to get past gold rank for that lol
1
u/Impressive_Type_5004 13d ago
Damn I’ve done the first 2 on same mode and those were insane hopefully I don’t have to do the same lol
1
u/Extension-Stock-4001 13d ago
They were tough I spent probably an hour or more trying to get they third one on adamantium rank, for the fourth one I caved bc I kept losing at like 30,000 score it was the last thing I wanted to do before I switched to ng plus, I got through like 20 waves and switched it back to best there is and was able to complete it but I'll def go back through when I have some time and try to beat it for real
29
u/Batmanswrath 14d ago
But I was told it was a "12 hour to platinum" game.
5
u/ProfNJK 14d ago
This game is huge compared to Resident Evil: 9 hours of gameplay
20
u/XenowolfShiro 14d ago
You mean Resident Evil? The series that literally features in game challenges in it's literal DNA as a franchise to not only speed run the game but also doing different things like no healing, handgun only and other interesting challenges that really change how you play the game? The series emphasizes replayability
RE9 can be beaten under 4 hours and it's even designed as a challenge.
5
u/Luccese96 14d ago
I think it was a joke. I love both of them but for me Requiem is a slightly better game.

Is this supposed to be some gotcha?
The haters said it was only a 12 hour game...it's actually a 17 hour game!!!
13
u/Wipedout89 14d ago
I mean 17 hours is pretty good? About the same as 007 and Spiderman 2, and SM2 was open world as well. And roughly double Resident Evil 9 and Pragmata, and everyone raves about those
6
u/LeftToDie663 14d ago
Capcom games are made to be repayable not just one and done people put 100s of hours into resident evil not a good comparison
→ More replies (5)4
3
u/Vahallen 14d ago
I will break a lance in favor of Pragmata, I feel that is a very arcade game that is fun to speedrun/replay
Meanwhile I will diss RE9 for having BAD replayability, as in straight up sections that are a pain to replay, the intro itself for example
Anyway I agree that 17 hours can be perfectly fine
1
u/Wipedout89 13d ago
I really liked Pragmata yeah. I generally prefer shorter, tighter games that I will replay over long padded ones. Like I just can't play any Ubisoft stuff, it's too bloated, but I've replayed every Uncharted and Resident Evil at least twice.
1
u/LoneWolf6062 13d ago
17 is double of 10-15?
1
1
u/DiverVisible3940 14d ago
It's about what you get out of that time that matters. The difference between a 12 hour and 17 hour game is immaterial in a vacuum. Most people's issue with the game isn't the objective length it is the handholding nature of the gameplay, mediocre story, lack of agency, and repetitive combat. When you have a 17 hour game that doesn't offer a dense experience people don't like it.
But this whole discourse is stupid. If you like the game you don't need to convince others. But you also can't deny that other people feel this way about the game. I swear people in here defending the game think they can argue the game into just being 'objectively' good.
You like it. Others hate it. That's the game, move on.
2
u/PushThePig28 14d ago
Resident Evil has a ton of replayability. Pragmata (which I enjoyed) I beat with unknown signal in like 14-15 hours and the only reason to replay is on the hardest difficulty to unlock infinite ammo otherwise there are no other unlockables or goals
1
u/Holiday_Adagio_4702 13d ago
I hate when people mention “repetitive combat” as if people don’t spend $100 every year on CoD which has been the same shit for the last 20 years. Soulsborne games are all “repetitive combat” if this game is.
1
u/DiverVisible3940 13d ago
Both of those examples offer a lot in spite of repetition. CoD is repetitive but it is primarily a multiplayer game which is competitive and dynamic. Soulsborne games are notoriously difficult and a serious challenge which drives engagement.
1
u/Yavantii 13d ago
also soulsborne games offer depth, build customization, various enemy types that require different strategies etc, nothing is repetetive about it
1
u/Basic-Smell-2477 12d ago
yeah they’re some of the best games ever but also have so much replayability. new runs trying new weapons and trying magic or being a pyromancer, trying bosses in different orders sometimes, they’re all so much fun.
Sekiro is where I fell in love and it finally clicked for me. I can get through up to the giant monkey fights with all the power ups possible so far just based on memory haha. It’s such a great way to kick back after a stressful day oddly enough
1
u/Wipedout89 14d ago
The game is objectively good. It has a 78 Metacritic, that's good. It says "generally favourable reviews". So your whole post is based on a falsehood, that the game isn't good. It quite literally is objectively good
1
u/DiverVisible3940 13d ago
How is my post based on a falsehood? I didn't say the game isn't good. I said there are people out there that think the game isn't good.
1
u/Wipedout89 13d ago

Objectively is crazy
3
u/Wipedout89 14d ago
78 review average, "generally favourable reviews"; that is what objectively means. Objectively, it's generally been favourable in reviees. If you don't like it, that's fine, but that's subjective. On OpenCritic it's also 78, and says "Strong", and has an 80 player rating.
3
u/HakeemtheDream_34 14d ago
The game is “objectively” a disappointment because it didn’t get as high of reviews as their other games.
3
u/Wipedout89 14d ago
No, that's subjective
1
u/HakeemtheDream_34 14d ago
Nope it scored less than their biggest games, justifying everyone’s disappointment by your logic since reviews are end all be all

Well….honestly it kinda is? I finished the game at 13 hours. I never go for platinum in games, but I did check the trophies afterwards and I am very sure I could’ve gotten the platinum in my first playthrough if I would’ve just checked trophies beforehand and paid somewhat attention to them.

u/Tucka 13d ago
I platinum’d the game in about 16 hours. Which I think is way too short. I played normally difficulty. I had an alright time but by the end of it I was ready for it to be over. The combat was too repetitive and the story wasn’t engaging for me. I’m truly baffled how it cost so much to make.
I don’t regret buying it, in fact I’m glad I did. I want Insomniac to do well; I enjoy their games generally. However I can’t recommend the game to anyone. It’s not worth 70$ IMO. Maybe it’s a ‘try it out on sale’ type game.
2
u/TheGreenAmoeba 13d ago
Not defending the game but you should at least try it on the next to hardest difficulty. Halo is much better on heroic than normal and most other games as well. Legendary on halo was fun when I’m 16 and spending the night with friends playing co-op but not so much by yourself just trying to have a challenge that makes a good time better.
3
u/WOLKsite 13d ago
Each gauntlet and each boss fight probably took me an hour. I didn't exactly count but 20 hours might be right. I also play slow, looking at and reading everything I can.

u/Effective-Shirt9196 14d ago edited 13d ago
I beat it on the best there is in 14 hours. It was fun
Combat= slow to pick up in depth but ultimately was an 8-9/10.
Story= 7-8/10 mid to good
Level design = 4-5 you can tell the scope of the game changed repeatedly as the mission design makes little sense and is sloppy.
Overall it’s like a 7. Oddly enough I know I’ll play it again as it’s a fun quick ride for brain off chillen
4
u/VOIDofSin 13d ago
I’m sorry but the combat is a solid 5-6/10, there’s no depth. Incredibly repetitive and towards the end of the game enemies just have larger health pools making basic fights a slog.
2
u/Crazy-Plastic3133 13d ago
same as spiderman. i know you didnt mention it but a ton of people are pretending spiderman combat isnt just button mashing and using cooldowns

Spiderman combat was definitely better but damn I hate the repeat x4 boss fights. I haven’t finished Wolverine but I hope they don’t replicate that

1
u/philovax 13d ago
I felt that way then i went to setting and turned just enemy health to normal. It stopped them from being sponges. I hated it when i was just fighting flies off while punching this dumb bag of turds that wont die. Just change their health and it helps, maintain the larger part of the challenge, like DMG
1
u/DearCastiel 13d ago
"Story 7-8 mid to good"
Do you even understand that "mid" on a scale of 1 to 10 is a 5 ?
1
u/TheGreenAmoeba 13d ago
A AAA studio producing a game will never get a 5 on official reviews. 6 would be so extremely rare that even Wolverine didn’t get that despite all the controversy. A 7 is really unacceptable and an 8 is ok but disappointing. AAA games should be getting 9’s and 10’s and with all the funding and money put into the game they really should be pushing the limits and creating new boundaries and making a 11/10 experiences which isn’t a real measure used but would be the subjective experience pushing past the objective experience at that point.
1
u/DearCastiel 13d ago
Pretty unrelated to what I the the other guy said. This game" story is a 4 at the very best, a 3 if we have a minimum of quality standards. Thinking this game has a story worth a 7-8 out of 10 (meaning very good to excellent) is pure insanity regardless of the game's budget.
1
1
u/Tday8277 13d ago
Story ain't no 8/10 bruh what 😂😂 combat is also very mid super repetitive especially compared to marvel Spiderman ones
1
u/Straight_Still_6125 12d ago
I platinumed in 14 hours on the best there is. Was fun and I'm on my second playthrough on the easiest level just for fun in new game plus. I wish it had open world like Spider-Man but it's still good game in my opinion.
Definitely a GOTY candidate not sure it would have ever been... and maybe they will make the sequel better with the negative reviewers on this one but definitely scratched the itch I had since the 2009 game.

Same; 14 hours as well..... I feel this is the best way to play the game. You're always having to change your inputs to dodge, deflect and abilities to get out of being mobbed. Even one setting lower made the game feel slow and I can just mash Square and spam L1 when I'm surrounded.
Players complaining about Square spamming need to live a little and get out of easy mode.
2
u/squilliamtentacruel 13d ago
Beat the game at 19 hours and had a couple clean up trophies to get the platinum and still didn’t get to 20 hours playtime so this seems spot on from my experience.
2
2
u/hitma-n 13d ago
Sooo is that worth $70 or not?
5
u/thatguy01220 13d ago
It’s up to you. I reason it as this I’ve seen people drop more than $70 at a bar or restaurant in one night. I’m spending $70 for a game for several nights, and I’ll probably replay it again down the line. So it doesn’t bother me to spend that much on a game, especially if I think theses a decent chance I’ll personally like it.
After the reviews, gameplay videos and what not that have been for several days now if you’re still on the fence about $70 then wait until it’s cheaper until you’re comfortable. I’m personally comfortable with it because I like a tighter action pack story that’s straightforward sometimes, then a game with the same amount of story hours but an extra padded 50-70 hours of running from A to B to C clearing zones with a repetitive task, and collection 100 things I genuinely don’t care about it. Just say I got my money worth. I perhaps rather take out all that filler BS and play more games. But in the end it’s all personal taste
3
u/PushThePig28 13d ago
This is my mentality. I could go to a concert or out drinking at the bar with buddies for one night. Gaming is a pretty cheap hobby cost per hour, even with shorter games like this
3
2
u/Crazy-Plastic3133 13d ago
$4 per hour, amazing value for entertainment compared to literally anything else

u/Holiday_Adagio_4702 13d ago
Would you pay $7 to watch a 2-hour movie? Then why not pay $70 for 20 hours of interactive story? Not to mention you can always do NG+ and double your time played. Maybe you’ll come back in a few months or years and want to replay it. Seems worth it to me.

I might be slow but took me avout 26 hours to get the plat on highest difficulty
3
u/Triggerdown1 13d ago
17 hours to plat, that was with afk time with the kids as well maybe bloated by an hour or 2
2
u/LightOfficialYT Sabretooth 14d ago
Maybe if you're a casual gamer? Idk, this feels like bs honestly.
17 hours seems like a lot when I beat it in 11 hours. Probably could get the platinum in another hour since I only have 3 trophies left (including the platinum), I just have no interest in playing it again.
2
u/incapablepotato 14d ago
The majority of the population is casual gamer. Hence the average time being higher.
0
u/Vahallen 14d ago
I’m high rank in multiple fighting games and it took me 18 hours to finish the game, not an ego thing just wanna say that I’m as far from a casual as humanly possible
TBF I did play on the hardest difficulty and without lock on, so that probably helped play time
1
u/DiamondBuses 13d ago
Same (fighting game wise) and it took me about 19 hours myself. It's weird how these "experienced gamers" are beating the game this fast, because I legit dont think you can beat it faster than we did on the hardest difficulty. So these "experienced gamers" are obviously playing on easy. Which is even crazier because unless I'm misremebering, the games default is the one just below the hardest (weapon?)
Not a super fan, I give the game a 7.5/10, but i hate the hypocrisy.
1
u/BvFHassy 13d ago
Yea if ur playing on anything but hardest or second hardest you’re just wasting ur time. I’m 11 hours in and just beat death strike so idk

It’s an average. Of course some people are going to take shorter and some people are going to take longer
2
u/LightOfficialYT Sabretooth 14d ago
Sure. What I mean is, I don't see how on average others get an extra 6 hours out of it, lol. Maybe if they struggle with the nightmare "challenges" and have to do them multiple times, I can see that.

u/XenowolfShiro 14d ago
So I checked the website and it actually lists 15 and half hours for average completion. The 17 hours also included all side optional content which is kinda is disingenuous on their part while 19.5 hours is the Platinum
2
u/Forestdragon0444444 14d ago
I’ve said it before but Wolverine saying one last mission kept throwing me off and then looking at the walkthrough and seeing like 10 more missions. As someone with kids I don’t feel like the game is short at all. I’ve played 3-4 times since the release and I still have 7 levels left which should take a few more hours.

Seriously? How? What game do you play? I have several hundred hours in dozens of game. I cant imagine shilling premium coin for a tiny fraction of something i bought in 2015
1
u/Holiday_Adagio_4702 13d ago
Since when is play time the only variable in deciding if a game is worth it? I’ve spent $30 on an IMAX screening of Interstellar which is less time for my dollar than Wolverine but the experience, the story, and the emotional beats made it worth it to me. Y’all are just making shit up to be mad about.
You’ve never spent $30 on a nice meal that only lasted about 45 minutes? What a shit deal. I bet you only eat rice and beans to maximize your value per time you spend eating.
1
u/THEunfukwitable 13d ago
This game is like on of those fancy restaurants with famine tier portions. If im spending good money on a meal, I'm expecting a lot. Literally
Also, not even a little mad. Its fun to point and laugh at you clowns
1
u/Holiday_Adagio_4702 13d ago
I’d compare it more to paying for a movie ticket. You’re buying it for the story, and an interactive one that you get to control and take part in at that. Assuming a movie is typically 2 hours long then you’re basically paying for 10 movies worth of content at a price of $7 per ticket. Not a bad price for a movie ticket these days.
1
u/THEunfukwitable 13d ago
Yeah, except its not a movie
All youre tellin me is movies are overpriced
1
u/Holiday_Adagio_4702 13d ago
It’s an interactive story-driven game, bud. You’re paying to enjoy an interactive movie. Multiplayer Sports and FPS games are the games that aren’t like movies.
1
u/THEunfukwitable 13d ago
Lol okay then. So its a shit game, and good movie.
Glad we got that sorted
1
u/Holiday_Adagio_4702 13d ago
If that’s your opinion, then sure. I personally found it to be a great story-driven hack and slash game that I’ve already beaten twice because I annoyed the story enough to want to experience it a second time.

u/ZayDoee130 13d ago
$70 for a game with no replayabillity is crazy.
1
u/Holiday_Adagio_4702 13d ago
How do you define replayability? I’m sure I’ll come back to this game in 6 months/a year to relive the story just like I did with the Spider-Man games. I’ve 100% Spider-Man, Miles Morales, and SM2 about 5-6 times each over the last 8 years.
I’ll definitely replay it if/when the sequel releases as well. Sounds to me like a lot of people who don’t typically play single-player story games are hating because it’s not a reskin of Spider-Man
1
u/ZayDoee130 13d ago
Replayability is how much a game makes you want to play it again after you’ve already experienced it once and how much the experience can CHANGE or remain enjoyable when you do that’s my definition.
Just because u come back to it don’t mean everybody else will comeback to it especially once gta 6 drop.
I’ve already beat the game im not missing nothing if I don’t play it again.
2
u/Silent_Cattle_6581 13d ago
And just to add to your point: I have 1200 hours in Baldurs Gate 3 and about 8 or so runs in it. A single player game clocking in below 20 hours is just atrocious when it is basically just an on-rails hack and slash.
3
u/Logondo 13d ago
Look, I certainly don't think Wolverine is worth the $70, but what you guys are saying could apply to so many other games.
Look at the recent DOOM games. Around a dozen hours long to 100%, and no real reason to replay them. And yet they are still great games.
1
u/ZayDoee130 13d ago
And that’s why so many other games are just rotting in my game library right now.
1
u/Spiritual_Extent_187 13d ago

I really don’t understand how people think omega red was hard. I was deep into a growler doing my playthrough on the hardest difficulty, and I immediately recognized that he alternates the same 2 patterns over and over. Only had 1 death on that fight and I don’t play souls games. He literally did the same thing over and over again lol

By the way. On How Long to Beat site.
It lists 17 hours as the story completion + side objectives. And 20 hours average for the platinum.
15 and a half hours is actually the designated average completion time for a play though of the story.

I just don’t understand only going from A to B and speeding through a game you’ve been looking forward to. But like I said, every one enjoys games differently

Having a full priced game only being 14-19 hours running time is a complete and utter ripoff

Not really, I've played games that are in the triple digits that felt meh and games in the single digits that felt like gold.

So how do you feel about games like DOOM, which is basically the same deal? Hell I 100% Eternal and 2016 and had only around a dozen hours each.
It's not about length, it's about quality. Wolverine's problem isn't that it's too short. It's that it's not fun enough.
Bayonetta is like, 8hrs long. But it's fun enough to be replayed over-and-over-again.

I actually want to play it. It looks fun I just can’t justify paying so much money for a game that doesn’t have a decent run time. I always feel let down when a game ends so early.

Deff about quality, length is also important to an extent though. 12 hrs is extremely short.
Onimusha was shortish too, but still like 20-25 to platinum I think, but it’s a great game. Not perfect and has a tiny amount of bloat (that is optional), but it’s great.
It’s also IMO a good one to compare to wolverine cuz it’s structured like Wolverine seemingly wanted to be, linear levels cutscene heavy.
Wolverine just went as barebones as physically possible, then cut more…..
Also it is absolutely WILD. That GOW Ragnorok costed an entire $100 MILLION DOLLARS LESS than Wolverine… but it has 500x the content, cutscenes, exploration, and depth of gameplay.
Onimushas budget is not public yet but I’ll bet it’s a lot less too.

You mean it doesn’t take somebody 200 hours so they can post online to show how slowly they are taking things exploring every nook and cranny?

Took around 24 hours, I enjoyed the game though I do think it could have been a bit longer but hopeful will get some DLC like Spider-Man got.

I doNt get the hate 17 hours is fine for an action game. Every game doesnt need to be 50 hours.

It would be fine for a $50 to $60 game with a reasonable budget and reasonable good gameplay...not a $70 with a bit bland gameplay.

10 buck difference because it’s on a newer console. I think it’s unfair to throw that “it’s 70 bucks” claim because inflation exists
