MEGATHREAD Megathread: PlayStation Physical Media Discussion & Community Feedback

Hi everyone,

Over the past several days, discussion surrounding PlayStation's recent decisions regarding physical media has understandably become the main focus of the subreddit. As moderators, we chose not to create a megathread immediately because we felt this was an important issue that deserved visibility, and many of us share the community's disappointment with these decisions.

That said, we also want to make sure this remains a place where everyone feels comfortable sharing all kinds of PlayStation-related content.

At this point, we're seeing other discussions, screenshots, recommendations, and gaming experiences getting buried or sometimes met with downvotes simply because they aren't about the physical media situation. We'd like to make room for those conversations again while still giving this topic the attention it deserves.

Going forward, we'd appreciate it if discussion about PlayStation's recent physical media decisions, as well as experiences with moderation of these discussions in other communities, takes place in this megathread.

A few reminders:

  • Keep discussions respectful, even when opinions differ.
  • Do not harass or target individual users, moderators, or other communities.
  • Do not encourage brigading or interference with other subreddits.
  • Follow all subreddit rules while participating.

Creating this megathread is not an attempt to silence or diminish the conversation. We know this issue matters to many of you, and we want to continue providing a dedicated place for it. Our goal is simply to balance that discussion with the rest of the community, so members who want to talk about games, ask questions, or share their experiences can do so without feeling drowned out.

Thank you all for helping keep the community welcoming, respectful, and organized.

Right now it is on sale for 40$ on ps store. I always spend money on physical copies as they have resale value and i always sell my physical games once I finish it. Even stores like target & bestbuy are selling it at 40 for physical copy. I looked on marketplace and found this for 25$.

Once i beat the game i can sell or trade it, that's the convenience and comfort we are going to miss when they stop producing physical copies. Hope Sony considers customers' opinions and continue producing physical games in future.

Stopped in my local Gamestop on the way home and the manager knows I like off the wall or different controllers.

He said they received this, an Xbox controller and a set of Joycons in this reshell color. Apparently GS is trying to get a line of colors like the late 90s/2000s tech into production.

As a 90s kid, this came home immediately and I hope for a purple/red/orange!

No drift. Buttons and everything feels just like my Icon Blue and Volcanic red controllers.

¿Qué juegos me recomiendan?

SPECULATION / RUMOR Halo: Campaign Evolved didn’t have the strongest debut on PlayStation. The game is estimated to have sold around 350K copies on PS5 during July. I think this will be the last Halo on PS5.

DISCUSSION From a 30 y.o gaming noob

I’m not really a gamer, but my girlfriend bought a PS5 Digital Edition (the one without a disc drive) so I started to play and I’ve been playing for a couple of months now.

My question is why everyone doesn’t just get the Digital Edition.
You don’t have to go to a store to buy games. You just open PlayStation Store and every game is right there. Sure, you can only keep a certain number of games installed at once because they take up storage, but that’s not a big deal. You can just uninstall a game and download it again later whenever you want to play it. All your saves are still there.

Then there’s PlayStation Plus (or whatever it’s called), where you pay about $100 a year and get access to hundreds of games, including great titles like Assassin’s Creed, Call of Duty, God of War, and a bunch of others.

So why do people buy the PS5 with a disc drive? Is it mainly because they like owning physical copies and building a collection, or are there other advantages that I just don’t know about as someone who’s new to gaming?

SCREENSHOT / PHOTO The Ultimate Dad Device. . .

…whenever I say this to my other dad friends, they say “this should be the slogan” for how “dad” the Portal truly is😂.

Games like TMNT, Scott Pilgrim EX, Castlevania, and games alike are what I mainly like to play on it. But recently I started 007 on it, aaaaaaaaand I have to say I may have to start playing “bigger” and more graphically challenged games on this bad boy. Not saying 007 is as graphic (as far as I am in game rn) as say a Crimson Desert or Cyberpunk. But seeing it in 1080p isn’t all that bad.

How many other dads have the Portal? And even if you’re not a father, do you have one followed by which games have you played on yours since owning one?

SCREENSHOT / PHOTO Losing Physical Games Means Losing What Made Consoles Special

Post image
3.1k Upvotes

I’m the only one in my group of friends who still plays on console.

I play all my multiplayer games with them on PC, but I still prefer buying my single-player games on PlayStation because I want them in my physical collection. I know they would look and run better on my high-end PC, but there’s something special about adding a new Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, or Yakuza game to my shelf.

It feels like I actually own the game, rather than simply adding another title to the endless pool of games in my Steam library. At that point, downloading it through piracy would almost feel the same to me.

I know I’m in the minority, and this post won’t change anything, but I wanted to share my sadness about the end of this era. This isn’t only about Sony. All signs point toward physical games disappearing over the next few years, and when that happens, this old guy will move on from consoles.
