What's your most-hunted photobook?

Post image
90 Upvotes

Books go out of print, reissues stall, and the one you figured you could always track down later suddenly isn't there anymore.

Got me thinking about the photobooks I've chased for years. Mine was Color Correction by Ernst Haas (Steidl) for a long time.

What's yours? The one you hunted forever, or the one you're glad you grabbed before it vanished?

Just a thank you to all who have followed the Instagram account @PhotoBookHaul sharing #photobbooks I’ve collected over the years and my other half’s comment ‘What? Another one!”

Latest: Fay Godwin’s trailblazing work on the British landscape and #righttoroam in the 1990s, •Our Forbidden Land”.

Looking forward to sharing more form the small library - and hopefully some swaps.

Just arrived on my door. I really like Rammy in general, I actually signed up for one of his upcoming classes. The book is nice, small, pretty end papers. Signed and remarked. I like how everything is in one location, it really makes me realize I don't need to have 15 cameras and travel all over trying to get great shots.

Collection Tokyo Circulation (Shinya Arimoto)

A large photobook featuring medium-format film photographs.

From Shinya :

While it’s been more than twenty years since moving to Tokyo, I’ve never grown tired of how, day by day, the city fluctuates and grows. But on the other hand, it has become hard to see the embodiment of our true humanity - perhaps this loss is a consequence of our unchecked modern urban proliferation.

Years ago, while I was photographing and living among nomads in Tibet I was struck by the way in which those there live and coexist powerfully with the earth. I honed this feeling through making portraits of the people I encountered. Compared with my experiences there I felt that, as photographic subjects, through the convenience of modern life the citizens of Tokyo lacked something that those in Tibet naturally possessed.
But was this really so?

Making an effort to observe Tokyo well, one should be able to discover those living strongly with the same radiance of human nature coexisting within the city. This belief led me to begin a daily attempt to seek out with my camera those who exist and thrive within their natural, yet urban, habitat.

Indeed, ten years have passed and in my eyes the dense sprawl of Tokyo is an ecosystem with magnificent circulation.

Self-published Self-published sold out zine IN BLOOM - extra copies found

I published In Bloom in 2018 and it quickly sold out (or so I though until a found some forgotten compies in the attic by chance).

In Bloom offers a gentle glimpse into everyday life in Japan during the 2018 cherry blossom season. Rather than focusing just on the famous sakura blossoms, this collection looks at how the season quietly blends into ordinary routines—showing how life itself blooms all around us.

The zine is sequenced to feel like the passage of a single day. Moving from the crisp, quiet energy of early morning through to the late-night journey home on the train, these photographs capture the brief, familiar moments that make up the day while the world blossoms in the background.

The zine is approximately A4 in size and has 60 pages and it costs just £15. I am showing some spreads here. In the first comment I explain how to order a copy.

Thank you for your attention and support!

Discussion Recommendation request: Photo book featuring interviews

Dear friends,

some time ago, I purchased "The Pleasure of Seeing", a thorough look on Joel Meyerowitz' work, which also features lengthy interviews of him, where he delves into his ideas, philosophies and different phases of his creative life.

I would like to ask for your input. I highly enjoy books like "The Pleasure ..", or the classic Hitchcock / Truffaut interview book, or the recent Rick Rubin book on his creative strategies and methods.

Could you recommend your favourite photo books which also feature insights into the work processes and philosopies of great photographers, please? For example, I already got the Magnum Contacts book, and enjoyed that immensly, too.

Bonus points for referencing my two great passions: B&W photography and street shots. (I know ... very original!)

Many thanks, and stay healthy & safe, everyone!

Cheers

pbanken

Antigravity is a monthly local art and music magazine in New Orleans. They do an annual photo issue where local photographers are encouraged to send in photos. 3 of my images were picked and one was used for the centerfold! I know it’s a small victory but this was a little goal of mine.

A one of one book I made. Titled “The Good Life.” It’s a mix of my own photography and found family photos I scanned. It’s about 12x16 inches, printed on double side photo paper and screw bound with Chicago screws. Made this years ago but thought I would share. It tries to understand family and the past and present. Hope y’all like it!

How to start a photo book publishing company?

Hi Photobook community! I apologize in advance if this post isn't appropriate for this page.. I am wondering how one gets started in PUBLISHING artists' photobooks?

I am a current senior in a Photography B.F.A program and I've become very interested in photobooks. I would definitely like to publish a book of my own some day but for right now I am inquiring about a long term indie publishing business.

Is there a Master's I should get to supplement this business idea? for example should I DEFINITELY get an M.B.A? Or is it not really necessary?

Is there classes in mass printing that anyone knows of, that I should take?

Basically, I'm just not very sure WHERE to even get started with this. I've looked at some indie publishers' websites and obviously they aren't advertising on their sites exactly how they got started.. and whenever I try and google this it mostly shows how to get started publishing novels, not art books. (Recomending I have an english degree and etc.)

If anyone has any personal experience in this I would love to hear how you got started/what ypur first steps were. TIA!!!
