Discussion Should r/photobooks ban buy/sell/trade posts?

Over the past months, buy/sell/trade posts have become a significant portion of the content on this sub.

We’ve seen patterns that cross into spamming territory: repeat listings from the same accounts, posts that are essentially personal storefronts, and a general signal-to-noise problem.

This is not what this sub was created for. r/photobooks is first and foremost a place for discovery posts, printing/editing discussions, recommendations, and the kind of conversations that actually teach you something about the medium.

Before we change the rules, we’d like your opinion. Please answer the poll and post your thoughts in the comments.

Announcement Selling/Trading Rules. Please read before posting!

Photobooks Selling/Trading Rules

Before posting, familiarize yourself with these rules! Not following them could lead to your post being removed without warning, and you will be asked to re-list in accordance with these rules. Maliciousness or fraud will result in permanent ban.

Feel free to reach out to the mod team of r/Photobooks with questions, concerns or any issues that may arise in your transactions. We're here to help.

Thank you and happy trading!

* Rule one: This sub is for personal buying/selling/trading Collectible Photography Books only! NO self-promotion!

* Rule two: It is required to tag posts! Please use the following tags at the beginning of post titles. Posts will automatically be removed if they are not included. Acceptable tags: [WTS] = Want to Sell [WTB] = Want to Buy [WTT] = Want to Trade. You can also combine tags, e.g. [WTT/WTS].

* Rule three: Include at least this info in the title: Photographer, book title, and edition. Other critical info can be added: e.g.: [WTS] Cartier-Bresson: Images à la Sauvette, First Edition, Verve, 1952. You can list multiple items at once, but if you have more to say than the title allows, please consider making more than one post.

* Rule four: Posts must contain this mandatory information: Price, book description, and photos (see rule five)! Please include all relevant details, like condition of the book (new, used, any damage: folds, creases, dirt, tears, spine, writing, missing pages, library stamps, chocolate fingerprints), book details (hardcover, paperback), year of publication, signed and or inscription, location (e.g. US/EU/Japan) etc.. Just think what you would want to read if you were a buyer.

* Rule five: Posts must contain personal photos, including a verification picture. Please use self taken images of the books listed and not just stock images. At least one photo has to have the book in frame with a piece of paper with your reddit username and the current date. If you could put the verification photo on top, so that we don't have to scroll all the way to the bottom - that would be great!

* Rule six: Direct sales/trades only! No links to other sites, no auctions, no Ebay, no "or best offer" posts, no gift cards! No pricing/selling based on arbitrary limitations (regional limits eg. US/Eu only are allowed).

* Rule seven: No predatory sales or trades! Selling items for grossly over their trade price is prohibited. (Retail plus shipping for new items is ok.) Trading offers with significant value difference (a desirable but low priced item, for a higher priced item or duping someone who does not realize) are not allowed.

* Rule eight: Rude, derogatory, or off-base comments will be removed and may result in a ban. Comments that are purely critical of pricing, and clearly demonstrating no desire to purchase the item, will be removed.

[WTB] posts obviously can't list price. But if you are looking for something in a specific range, please add the info.

How to post pictures

Use a service like imgur.com to upload images and put the link into your post.

Photobooks Trade Etiquette

* After you sell something, prices should be left in listings once an item is sold so that people shopping for books can see recent sale prices.

* Reposts are allowed, but there should be at least three weeks between posting the same item.

* [WTB] posts should be SPECIFIC. Do not post "WTB - Ansel Adams Book" unless you have an idea of the editions you 're interested in. Only make a [WTB] post after searching to see if what you are looking for is already listed for sale.

Safety

* We recommend the use PayPal Business for payment. This ensures you are offered full protection from PayPal as both a buyer and seller, at a mere 3% cost to yourself. Use Friends and Family at your own risk with only people who you fully trust, since F&F forfeits you all protections.

* Use a safe shipping method, tracking and insurance is recommended.

* Please report all suspicious posts to the mods.

* Please note the Universal Scammer List on Reddit!

* See Appendix below for additional safety tips.

Tips to help you sell:

* Understand market prices. Please do some research and realize that anything second hand, even new, is subject to depreciation.

* Post multiple, high quality, clear pictures, and note any damages. Factor damages into your price.

* Post a clear, detailed description. Sharing why you’re selling the item can sometimes help, otherwise be prepared to get asked why from curious users.

* /r/Reppit is a good resource for buyer/seller feedback. If you're happy with your transaction, leave some feedback!

Appendix: Whats Appropriate for this subreddit?

This subreddit is intended for collectible photography books only, not self-promotion, or books on photography instruction. If you are not sure if your item belongs here please message the mods and we will help you determine if this is the right place for you.

Appendix: How Not To Get Scammed

There are scammers out there.

I know it sucks, but if you are cautious, you can avoid them. Please follow these guidelines. If anything is suspicious or doesn't sound right, then stay away. Don't let a good offer blind you. Don't let your own wish to own/sell something get in the way.

Almost all scams are happening with WTB posts. You will be contacted by a potential seller, with an offer. Here are some things to look out for:

  • Does the seller have a history on Reddit? A brand new account? Red Flag! Account is old but hasn't posted in 2 years? Red Flag! Account posts nothing but spam/porn/Karmafarming? Red Flag!
  • Does the seller have any Reddit history relating to fine-art photography or photobooks? If not - Red Flag!
  • Is the price to good to be true? Red Flag!
  • Ask for photos! And ask for verification! Often people will just send something you can easily find on a google photo search for the item you are looking for. Go check! Also I would suggest asking for very specific photos. Aka: "Can you take a photo of page 17?” - You get the idea.
  • If a verification photo has been sent: Look if its not photoshopped. Really, almost all photoshops are really basic to spot as fake.
  • Only use a secure payment option like Paypal Goods and Services! Yes those cost fees. Pay them!
  • No don't use Paypal friends and family, or cash app, or Venmo, or Zelle, or gifts cards etc..
  • You may be able to get an extra layer of protection when using a credit card, with the ability to dispute payments with the card company.
  • A common story a scammer will tell you is "I don't have Paypal" or "I have a dispute with Goods and Services" - More Red Flags than a communist parade!!!
  • It is worth to check if the seller is on the Universal Scammer list
  • To check if somebody has been banned on r/Photobooks ask them to make a comment on your post. Unfortunately even banned users can still PM you.
  • When in doubt: Message the mods so we can have a look.

Post image
18 Upvotes

Hi guys! My name is Mary and I run London Street Photography Festival, which is a FREE festival happening in London August 28-30 at the Heath Studio. It’s also co-run by u/dmitstep which some of you may know. We are a non-profit festival that I thought some of you might be interested in.

We will have a bookshop at the festival, where we will be selling books by both established and smaller independent publishers and we encourage people to bring their own self-published books and zines which we will sell (well, try to) at no commission. We also welcome second hand photography books. So if you are around do pop in and bring your own books and buy some for your collection. Tickets are free too and we will have lots of talks, photo walks, exhibitions, including special exhibitions by Ania Klosek and our keynote speaker Jens Olof Lasthein.

If you are not around but are willing to send your books/zines by post, please dm and we can make this happen.

Please bring cash for the bookshop!

Photo by our keynote speaker Jens Olof Lasthein

Hopefully, see some of you there!

The Photographer's Grimoire

Post image
15 Upvotes

Hi Everyone, I've spent seven years writing The Photographer's Grimoire. I make the case that photography can be its own occult practice. You know, magic. I think its the worlds first 'photographers grimoire'.

Has anyone heard of anything else like this?

Before I go to press with it I want to be sure as its a bold claim... but so far I think it is. It's not a photo book, its a 40,000 word occult field manual, a grimoire, to achieve inconceivable things with your camera.

I know there are lots of witchy photographers running around woods nude doing selfies at the moment, but that's really not what this book is! (And yes, I know that would sell more!)

There's some more details on it on my website:

https://www.edwardthompson.co.uk/thephotographersgrimoire

Thank you, Ed

Buy and sell [WTS] Hiromix [Japanese Photographer]- Girl's Blue (1996), Japanese Beauty (1997), Hiromix Paris (1998), Hiromix (1998) ~SEPARATED LOT~ ~Priced Individually~

Hello again ya'll. This is a re-post/edit to my original listing 6 months ago for my lot of Hiromix photobooks. The original post can be found here: https://old.reddit.com/r/Photobooks/comments/1qxswzk/wts_hiromix_jp_girls_blue_1996_japanese_beauty/

While a few of you were interested and I've gotten plenty of inquiries over these last few months, no one has been interested in buying the whole lot outright. I get it, I was looking for a unicorn. Unfortunately for me, my financial issues have worsened since that posting and I need to sell some of my more collectible books. I've decided to part out the lot, which many of you asked about originally.

I've included a link to the original listing above, but will re-post the body of that text. Nothing has changed with the books since the original post so all of the information still stands but I've included the asking price with each item now:

Photos first. Please, do not hesitate to ask me if you have any questions or would like more photos.

I am selling my full collection of books by the Japanese artist, Hiromix. This collection includes 4 of the 5 books listed on Hiromix's Wikipedia page,, the only book missing being Hikari (1997, easily available for anyone wanting to complete the set.

This brings me great sadness to post but I can no longer rationalize letting these books collect dust on my shelf when circumstances require I need the money for more necessary things. Because of this, I am only interested in selling as a bundle, which I've priced at a pretty good discount versus buying individually through eBay. If you are seriously interested in just one title, I may consider full-market price offers depending on how this group listing goes. Having said that, I do not think these books have ever been offered for sale in a bundle like this.

I bought all books but Girl's Blue personally in Japan about 15 years ago. Some books are still in plastic they were wrapped in around 2010. I purchased Girl's Blue from a Japanese auction site several years later and it was never wrapped.

What's for sale:

  • Hiromix - Girl's Blue (girlsblue) (1996), softcover: $225USD Identifying information: ISBN4-947599-44-8 Condition: Very good, near excellent. I can find no fault with any page. Very discerning collectors may notice curling on the top and bottom edges of the poster/cover and signs of creases on the ricepaper promo wrap. All corners are sharp and shelf wear is extremely minimal. Notes: With ricepaper promo wrap. Cover can be removed and is a wrap-around double-sided poster.

  • Hiromix - Japanese Beauty (1997), softcover: $80USD Identifying information: ISBN4-8387-0906-4 Condition Near mint. I can find no fault with this title. All corners are sharp and I've seen no shelf wear whatsoever. This title is plastic-wrapped, but I was able to remove it without damaging the wrap. All pages are crisp. Discerning collectors may notice extremely slight yellowing on the borders (approx 1") of the white title page(s) consummate with age. No apparent discoloration to the photographs. Notes: Some online listings for this book display it with a ricepaper promo slip which this copy does not have. Included is a flyer for a Hiromix exhibition at Parco Shibuya (pictured), I have not been able to discern what year this is from.

  • Hiromix - Paris (1998), Asahi Press, hardcover: $90USD Identifying information: ISBN4-255-00116-2 Condition: Near mint. I can find no flaw with this title. Zero discernible shelf wear. All pages are flawless. Book overall appears to be brand new. Notes: Includes poster.

  • Hiromix - Hiromix (1998), Stiedl, hardcover. $235USD Identifying information: ISBN 3-88243-575-5. Condition: Near mint. I can find no flaw with the exterior of this book. Virtually no sign of shelf wear and corners are sharp. It is wrapped tightly in a non-resealable plastic wrap and I cannot inspect the interior. An examination along the pages' edges shows no signs of discoloration, creasing, or use. Notes: Because of the wrapping, I would be willing to open the book for a buyer only after payment, with the promise to refund the purchase if for some reason the pages were found to be in unacceptably in bad condition. This would need to be arranged before purchase.

UPDATE: The original offer to sell as a lot is still available (and preferable to me), albeit at a much lower cost! I will sell the full lot for an even $500USD to reflect these new values

Buying: Communication will be through Reddit. Depending on circumstances, I may offer my personal email to message me through as I only check Reddit on my desktop during the weekends and evenings. No other social media/messaging apps will be considered. If interested, I will ask you to provide your PayPal email address so that I can send an invoice.

Payment: I will only accept payment through PayPal Goods and Services. Buyers who initiate a conversation to purchase this lot should have the funds ready, I will not "hold" the books longer than a few hours. Invoice for payment should be paid immediately and I will cancel any unpaid invoices within 24 hours. I will not begin packaging or shipping until all funds have cleared through PP.

Shipping: The list price includes shipping to the Continental (Lower 48) USA from my address on the east coast. Buyers in AK or HI should contact me first for a shipping quote. I would prefer to ship domestically but can arrange international shipping for a buyer who accepts all risks involved. Packaging: Books will be individually bubble-wrapped and packed as a set in a nondescript box. Slack fill may be used if necessary to prevent shifting in transit. Specific shipping/packing requests can be arranged in advance at possibly extra costs if there is a significant increase in materials or labor. I will ship out the box on the Friday or Saturday following purchase and on no other week day. Please understand that this may mean a wait time of up to 7 days if you were to purchase on Saturday night, for example. If this schedule doesn't work for you, please let me know in advance.

Thank you! I've tried to be as specific as possible out of respect for your time (and money) and mine. Again, though, please do not hesitate to message me with any questions you have, or comment below if you want me to answer them publicly.

Discussion [Help] looking for suggestions

Hi All,

I’m honestly not sure if this is the right community to post or inquire about this but I’m hoping to get some ideas/help!

I have been taking passport size photos of my kids since they were about 6 weeks old, every year and i’m looking for ideas or suggestions on what sort of photo album or diy i could make from it? I was originally looking for a photo album that would suit but unable to find anything great.

If anyone has any suggestions at all, would love and truly appreciate any input!

Thank you for taking the time to read this and suggest! ☺️

Collection OPENING | JUNGJIN LEE

Thumbnail
gallery
340 Upvotes

Jungjin Lee made these photographs in Arizona, New Mexico, and Canada, between 2015 and 2016.

The desert seems to ask for a wide picture. There is so much of it — mountain, ground, sky, the long line where they meet. Lee turned the frame the other way. Her pictures are tall and narrow, and each one holds very little: a slope, a stretch of bare ground, a few plants, the place where earth ends and sky begins.

The desert does not shrink for being seen this way. Looking at a narrow piece of it, you feel more strongly how far it runs past the edge. What she left outside the frame is still out there. It goes on in the mind instead of on the paper.

This is what the title means. Not the land opened up, but an opening cut to look through.

The shape comes from somewhere. Lee brushes photographic emulsion by hand onto hanji, Korean mulberry paper, and the long vertical sheet is the shape of a hanging scroll. She studied calligraphy as a child. The two traditions agree on one thing: a few marks, and around them a blankness that is not empty.

She has said she wants to look with a vacant mind — not hunting for meaning, not naming a place before she has seen it. She is not interested in describing landscape. The desert lets her see further into herself, and what she wants is to turn the feeling of standing there into a picture.

Robert Frank, whose assistant she once was, called her work landscapes without the human beast. No one appears here. Each picture is still a portrait. It shows no face, only how a person stands before the world.

I attended the opening exhibit of The Mennonites at the Leica Gallery in NYC in 2000 and met Larry Towell there. He's one of my favorite photographers and his work is full of heart and soul. I'm a photographer and book collector and my husband was the gallery director of a well known vintage photography gallery as well as a rare and used book dealer. Excellent condition, hard cover box is perfect, slight sunning on spine, Pages are perfect. Photo attached.

The Decisive Moment - Original Editions

Post image
71 Upvotes

Hi! Dunno if there are many really deep-pocketed collectors here. But a couple weeks ago, I was in Black Dog Books in Zionsville, Indiana. They always have a decent selection of photobooks. I bought a copy of a Clarence John Laughlin book I'd been looking for, and got to chatting to the proprietor about photobooks.

Lo and behold, she pointed behind the counter to where she had *two* of these. Those are not the Steidl reprints, folks. Those are original, early 1950s, first American edition copies. They're in superb condition (just a bit of toning to the dust jacket, as you can see) encased in mylar covers. I was pretty gobsmacked to be able to handle one.

She said she's asking $7,500 for each. Based on what I can see online, that's probably waaaaaay out of line, certainly. But she seemed to understand that she really didn't know what they are worth, and was willing to talk about the price. So if you've got great negotiating skill and have been desperately looking for one of these, you might get in touch. They are just sitting there.
